Sonic rolls to Wii early

The iconic hedgehog's debut on Nintendo's new console coming a week early; Sonic and the Secret Rings now shipping on February 20.

There's good news and bad news for those who can't wait to give the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Wii a spin. The bad news is they'll still have to wait. The good news is they won't have to wait as long.

Originally scheduled for release on February 27, the Wii-exclusive Sonic and the Secret Rings will now ship to stores on February 20. The game was announced at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo under the name Sonic Wild Fire.

Sonic has already burned up next-generation consoles with the aptly named Sonic the Hedgehog. The game makes its way onto the PlayStation 3 this week and debuted on the Xbox 360 last November to poor reviews.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is rated E for Everyone and will retail for $49.99. For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Anyone else go to E3 last year who played it that can confirm my impressions? All I know is that i had so much fun with it that I will buy reagrdless of the review score. It's the speed and the control scheme of that game that convinced me the innovative risk Nintendo was taking with the Wii would pay off, not the added novelty of aiming your bow with the wiimote in Zelda : ) I love Zelda, its just this was what got me the most excited as to what could be done with the Wii. That and twisting my arm to open doors and use the grappling hook in Metroid Prime 3 : )

derubermensch1 - I hope you're right. It would be great for a top shelf adventure to come out for the Wii, something other than minigames and Zelda. If done right, it could be the next big thing.

Just to reiterate from my previous post (which was essentially a mini preview as I've actually played the game), it is nothing like the other 3d sonic games. Its gameplay has 0% in common other than the fact that sonic is in the game. You're all in for a treat with this one : )

And it will still likely end up another lackluster sonic game. Blah.

A week earlier?. . . Great, but I'm still without a Wii. . .

I dont think anything can compare to how bad the 360/ps3 versions where so hopefully theres nothing to worry about there

If this Sonic game manages to out do itself better than what was placed on the 360 and PS3 then I have very high hopes for the Wii itself.

I played this game at E3 last year and it was awesome, and I mean awesome. I played Sonic for the PS3 there and thought the graphics were amazing but it was the same old thing where I kept falling off edges, etc. Thought it was pretty good though. But then, after only waiting an hour in the Wii line (I got in so fast because a Nintendo rep asked me to hold my Xbox 360 bag over my head, tear it in half, and yell "I repent all sin!"), I got to play Sonic Wild Fire and it blew the PS3 Sonic away. You hold the controller sidways and tilt it back and forth to steer Sonic while he is continuously moving forward. You press A to jump and, when you fill your wild fire gauge by picking up these red pellets throughout the level, you tap the wiimote forward twice for a ridiculous burst of speed, and I mean fast. To slow down you tilt the wiimote backwards and to attack you jump and shake the wiimote forward once in the direction of the enemy to spin into it and kill it, and you can chain this obviously if there are other enemies within range. For those that remember, you will get the same feeling playing this game as you did when you first played the first Sonic for Genesis. I played Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, etc while in the Wii area and I had the most fun playing Sonic Wildfire, by far, than I did playing any other game at E3 that year, if not ever. I can't wait to get this when it comes out!

I hope Sonic Wii will paint the cracks the dreaded Sonic 360 forgot to brush. So far Sonic Adventure 2 is my fav 3d Sonic game; ever since then the rest of the 3d Sonics tanked.

i really hope this is good, i love sonic but darn it there hasn't been a sonic game worth owning since the dreamcast. strangely i know why they make these games, i have a friend who is such a sonic fan he gets/pirates everyone and beats it no matter how horrible it is, because he loves sonic. i call that a illness.

hmmm i hope there not planning on wasting our time again, the 360 game was horrible.

I'm really looking forward to this game. I always loved the Sonic stages in the previous Sonic Adventures, and hopefully this game is equally as awesome. I'm relieved to hear that you don't have to play as any other characters, since the Knuckles stages used to bore me to tears. I also hope that this game rocks. The last good Sonic game I played was Sonic Rush, and I loved that! C'mon Sega, don't screw it up.

This could be Sega's last hope. The theme of the game is great, but Sega tends to disappoint its fans. The camera angle is the most common problem in 3D Sonic games. There are rumors that it will use the connect24, if it does they can fix some problems using patches. I just hope it does not suck.

The next-gen sonic is AWFUL. DO NOT GET IT. The demo is BETTER than the actual game (believe it or not...). I love Sonic, but this game looks like the Speed Stages from the next-gen sonic... you know, the stages where you run straight in one direction, all by itself and you just move left and right, and avoid getting stuck in scenery, etc. If this is game is just a FULL game of some awful sonic stages.... there is no way that Sonic can be taken seriously ever again.

Well, as long as it doesn't suck as bad as the other one, it'll at least be good. Right?

It looked like the PS3/360 Sonic sucks big time, just like the last generation games. I hope the Wii version is fun. Of course, I don't have a Wii yet. Come on, Nintendo, where is my silver Wii like the one you showed off in all those pictures??

'I am really looking forward to this one. Of course, I have to get my hands on a wii first. They're doing exactly what they need to do: reinvent the series.' nononono! since when has sonic ever needed reinventing? aaagh i want another 2d one!

"This will be the worst Sonic...It will be even worse than the 360 version. Sega is releasing this game a week earlier than expected...this means that they aren't even trying as hard as they did on the 360 version. Wii-mote with Sonic just doesn't seem feasible either. This will be the worst version of Sonic ever made..." Well, so far at least, according to those who have actually PLAYED the game--it is supposed to be good. In fact a completely differently development studio has been working on it than Sonic Team--which, I think, considering Sonic Team's latest efforts is a good sign. Fresh blood is just what the series needs. The game has been built from the ground up for the Wii, which again is a good sign. Also the game's focus is primarily on speed, which has been missing from recent sonic offerings. All told it LOOKS good. We'll just have to wait and see though...

"This will be the worst version of Sonic ever made..." Congratulations! You can now predict the future. This ability, if discovered by government officals, is sure to lead to you being used like a tool. If you want to avoid this kind of lifestyle, immediately pack up a few of your most valuable things, some shirts and pants (don't forget the undies!), and haul tail to the nearest mountain range. Live out the rest of your life surviving off of nature, forsaking video games and all other forms of electronic entertainment eternally. The world will thank you for it.

That's pretty unusual. Most games push back release dates, not pull forward. That's cool, I've been wanting to try this game for a while.

Well, this is Sonic's last chance. I've always been a Sonic fan (he was my first hero as a child) but even I can't stand most of the new Sonic games (anything after Sonic Adventure 2). While moving the release date up is usually a bad sign (Marvel Nemesis anyone?) I've still got hope for this game. Hopefully, the new structure revitalizes everything, and doesn't just make the game even more stale.

Judging by how good Sonic Rush was, I expect this to be good.

I read the article about this Sonic on the latest Nintendo Power. I think the new concept of linearity is going to suit this game wonderfully and fix most of its problems from other 3d iterations in the series, such as bad camera and broken gameplay. Making Sonic move non-stop will give a puzzle feel to the game and give it back its exuberance it once had when it was only a mere 2d platformer.

This sonic look way better than the one for the 360 and PS3 because the controls should give it a better control over sonic, hopefully this can bring the sonic series back

maybe this game won't be so bad, Sonic Adventure was great, and Sonic Adventure was decent, and Sonic heroes was good, maybe this game can join these ranks, although the rest of sonic's 3d adventures stunk like hell, seriously, Shadow should had never seen the light of day, much less get Player choice and greatest hits treatment
