Sega of America has today announced the North American release of Sonic Heroes for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game, which was released for the GameCube on January 6, marks the first time that Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared on either console.

"We are proud to see our marquee franchise reaching the largest possible gaming audience and running at Sonic speed onto PlayStation 2 and Xbox for the first time," said Scott Steinberg, vice president of entertainment marketing at Sega of America. "We look forward to quickly establishing as strong a marketing presence on PlayStation 2 and Xbox as we have on Nintendo GameCube."

Sonic Heroes challenges players to control three characters simultaneously as they negotiate 14 stages en route to a confrontation with the evil Doctor Eggman. For more information, check out our previous coverage of the game.
