Sonic Generations UK special edition spotted - Retail Radar

GAME listing says top SKU to include Casino Night Pinball Stage, Super Sonic Costume, and theme for Xbox 360; PS3 gets stage only; no word on North American debut.

Sega will mark the 20th anniversary of its zippy hedgehog later this year with the launch of Sonic Generations for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Gamers looking to celebrate the milestone may be able to pick up a premium version of the game if a retail listing proves accurate.

Sonic Generations looks like it's getting a special edition.

According to product listings at United Kingdom retailer GAME, Sega is preparing a special edition of Sonic Generations for release later this year. The product page for the Xbox 360 special edition indicates it will include the Casino Night Pinball Stage from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a Super Sonic avatar costume, and a theme.

The PlayStation 3 Sonic Generations Special Edition will reportedly include the Casino Night Pinball Stage alone. According to the retail listings, the Sonic Generations Special Edition will sell for £39.99 (~$65).

Sonic Generations is also in development for the 3DS and PC, though special editions of the game for those systems were not listed. As of press time, Sega had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Sonic Generations will look to capitalize on Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary. As such, Sega will be touching upon three different Sonic generations: the classic 2D Genesis days, the 3D's introduction with the Dreamcast, and then today's modern HD graphics phase.

Sonic Generations takes a trip down memory lane.

Sega has rebuilt a number of levels from games gone by for Sonic Generations, and players will be able to speed through these stages in 2D and 3D perspectives. Sonic's abilities will also depend on the incarnation that players choose, as the spin dash and spin attacks will be open to Sonic 2D, while his 3D persona will be able to use the homing attack and sonic boost abilities.

Though the stages will be reimaginings of classic levels, Sonic Generations will feature a new storyline. In it, a "mysterious new power" opens up rips in space time, which pulls Sonic and his crew back in time, where he battles new challenges alongside his former self.

Wow can't wait, first day buy even if it is 65$. I didn't know they were bringing back the best 3d iteration, on Dreamcast.

@Darth_DuMas I disagree about 3D platforming not working for Sonic. I thought Sonic Adventure 1-2 and Heroes were great, while a few other games had flops. However, the Daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors had great gameplay, so I can see it working well here. That's just my opinion. To each their own.

I LOVED the demo on 360 it felt perfect. The exact spot the 2D Sonics have been reaching for, for years. But I fear it'll be let down by the 3D stages. I'm sorry but Sega are bloody useless at 3D platforming when it comes to Sonic. Sega really need to be honest about the 3D Sonic games and ask themselves why they aren't working. I think they should go the other direction with speed in the 3D games. When you reach a certain speed, instead of Sonic going too fast, have everything around him go bullet time slow. This way he can remain at a controllable speed that the levels can still work without it turning into an on rails affair.

Here's a better way to honor the 20th birthday of the blue dude: Release all of the classic Sonic games with updated HD graphics and sound in a compilation similar to what Nintendo had with Super Mario All Stars for the SNES long ago. Sounds cool, huh?

I was Gamestop and saw the preorder advertisement for this game. I seriously can't wait for this. I played the demo and I have to say it is amazing and nostalgic. :D Let's hope this game makes a huge comeback for the Sonic series. I know Sonic 4 and Colors was great, but I hope the trend continues with this game. :D

I hate when companies do this. Here, Sonic Generations is trying to be a labor of love to Sonic fans, yet at the same time they're denying content to many fans just because they live in a certain country or don't want to preorder. Bad move, Sega.

Any and all stages should be included with the game already, I'm not going to buy DLC for stages if they aren't part of the main story.

Sonic doesn't have the same appeal anymore. If Sega wouldn't have pushed these "3D era" games on us for so long I might have more interest. As it is I didn't care for the demo, I thought it was stupid, IDK, maybe I'm wrong but this whole thing rubs me the wrong way.....

I think casino night zone should surely be included as standard. Well maybe sega are planning to release it as DLC, but still seems like a bad decision.

i enjoyed how the demo played, defiinitely true to classic sonic, although i was hoping they'd include the 3d "modern" version of green hill zone as well. but what i'm most concerned with is the level selection. From what i've heard, there is only going to be one stage from each "main" console sonic game, and if you think about it that's not a lot of stages. granted, each stage counts twice as there are both versions of each, but nonetheless, two or three stages from each game would've been awesome. given that i believe there is not going to be any multiplayer modes for sonic generation, i would hope the single player campaign is beefy enough to warrant the price tag of a full game, and while i'm 100% definitely going to buy this no matter what, whether I wait to buy it cheaper used or brand new when it first comes out remains to be seen, depending on the stage selection. I expect some sort of DLC and this game is ripe for new stages being prime DLC, but if they are not including enough stages on the disc, then I'll buy it used so after i download new stages via DLC i'm not spending more than $60.

This is the game I'm expecting more. Sega's doing legal work as celebration of 20 years of Sonic.
