Sonic and Pac-Man artist Greg Martin dies

Man behind iconic video game box art including early Sonic and Pac-Man games passes away.

Greg Martin, the prolific artist behind some of the most memorable and iconic video game box art, including artwork for early Sonic and Pac-Man games, has died.

The news comes from the Nintendo Age forums, where a friend of Martin recalled his illustrious career as an artist.

Martin started off working at Tom & Jerry and The Flintstones animation studio Hanna Barbera, before switching to the games industry. He reportedly worked there at the same time Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane did.

His long list of video game box art credits include various Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man games, as well as numerous licensed games from the Jetsons and Flintstones franchises.

You can check out a collection of his work at the Nintendo Age forums.

The art work will be missed by everyone who grew up in the 90's, The man will be missed by those who knew him, the 90's just wouldn't have been the same without his work and the world wont be the same without people like him - R.I.P Greg Martin.

I always liked the Sonic genesis design better than the current look.

The generation is aging, and passing, I know it's a terrible thing :( , but you have to look forward to next year, as human kind will always make successors :)

Grag Martin, the pioneer of 90's box art... and he's gone :(

@soulless4now

I liked that design too - too bad that Sega decided to make Tails' character backstory more certain, such as his gender. (Personally, I preferred that Tails' gender remained ambiguous.)

@Gelugon_baat I always thought he was male since I played Sonic 2 back in the 90s. :P What I don't get is why he's one of the few characters to actually have a last name is the series. Heck, no one calls him Miles anyway.
