Some Xbox One consoles experiencing hardware issues

GameSpot is monitoring the issue, but currently there are a very small number of reported issues.

by

When you let several hundred thousand pieces of hardware out into the wild simultaneously, some of those machines are going to broken or dead on arrival. And the launch of the Xbox One is no different.

The most prevalent problem that new Xbox One buyers are reporting with the console seem deal with a grinding noise when trying to play games from disc. While it's impossible to separate legitimate issues from trolls on forums and reviews for the console, some users have uploaded videos to YouTube that show the system not reading discs and instead making a loud grinding noise.

Simply due to the low number of videos showing up, the issue seems to be an isolated extreme case, but we'll update this story with more details as they emerge. The PlayStation 4, which released last week, also experienced scattered reports of systems not functioning. Sony's console instead displayed a flashing blue light, but the problems were isolated to less than 1% of overall consoles.

But what about you? Did you pick up an Xbox One at launch and run into any problems? Let us know in the comments below!

The first day one console I received lasted six days before it stopped working.  It turned on, but nothing came out of the TV.  It took them almost a week to send me a new one, with of course a $500 hold on my credit card.  I received the new one yesterday, just the console.  Surprise, it didn't turn on for more than 3 seconds.  After about a minute of turning it on, it finally worked.  Today, same issue as the original.  Power on...no one home.  I sent the original back yesterday via Fedex.  They wanted to put another hold for $500 to send a new one or wait until they receive the last one to send a new one.  (Which I do understand). So of course if I had allowed them to do that, including games I would have spend $1600 on a product that does not work.  The best part, as if this isn't bad enough, is the first support person said, "this is a known issue."  The person I talked to today, who is about 6th or 7th person said, "I don't know why he told you that, this is the only complaint we have heard about this."  She clearly hasn't checked their own troubleshooting forum section, since it's listed.  My total compensation 50% off a year supply to xbox live!  WTF.

my console was one of the consoles with the issue on the disc drive.

so far I've received the bare minimum of information from Microsoft, despite registering my device on the 22nd for a service. the order just states " in progress" I have called Microsoft for any information on how long it will take, and they tell me to contact UPS. for a multi million pound company this is ridiculous, and if its not here by Friday then that's a total joke

My brother bought a brand new expensive car 3 years ago and the transmission went on it in 1 week... I bought a snickers candy bar one time and there were no peanuts in it..rrrrr.... .  Shall I go on? meanwhile I been kicking it on my new system... Works fantastic.

It sucks anytime you buy something brand new and it turns out to be dead on arrival. Whether it be an Xbox One, a box fan, or George Foreman grill, no one wants their shiny new toy to be broken when they open the box.

Though to be frank...that broken grill would probably piss me off the most. Hunger makes me rage.

The Xbox One as a whole IS a hardware issue. Sorry, but mass producing an obsolete unit that is expected to last 10 years is already asking for trouble.

You'll know right away if you have a problem console when it begins emitting continuous cheesy orchestral error music.

Tao_and_Zen

Was to be expected and therefore no surprise. Can't even imagine anything mass produced having 0% failure rate.

I'm pretty sure that every piece of technology ever released has had some sort of problem at one time or another. Nothing is perfect. I agree that it can be infuriating at times though.

Why Sony and MS chose disk feeding drives is beyond me. Those drives are more expensive, scratch discs and cause nothing but problems.

Haha... 3 xboxes later and 5 years, it'll work like promised.

Now that the early adopters have gobbled up this TERRIBLE! launch. They may as well beta test the hardware for us people, who are waiting for proper games to come out. Thank you beta testers, for being moronic, wasteful and  for lacking the patience to wait. You guys are awesome.

Sheeze! is this site owned by microsoft????

Just got on first time since Thursday and XBone all over the site...........

And has to the issue's with both consoles....... both cost alot of hard earned cash to get, and trying telling some one who's long awaited next gen-console ain't working....!!!

I'm sure they will be Ok when they know only one percent are having issue's.........

Funny how much xbone fans would be happy and excited that they finally got thier hands on blu ray drive.

gamespotpanayis

I, as an Xbox One owner, am glad about this publicity about hardware failures.

I never actually thought to try out the slot drive.. I'll have to stick a blu-ray in to see if my console has a problem.

"this is what happens when you make fun of the ps4 problems"?...So what you are saying is that if you make fun of a sony console fucking up then the god of consoles is going to "smite" the microsoft console? GTFO..I agree with not bashing consoles you havent got/cant afford but this video is a fucking stealth troll at best.  It should have just said " Dear microft?sony,  Please stop rushing shit out just because you think that people have 3-400 pounds just sitting there, burning a hole in their pocket, waiting to buy the first console out of the gate. Sensible people will buy the best product for their gaming needs and not some rushed piece of blue lighty disc grindy nonsense!! Man the fuck up and give us a finished product for a fucking change, you have the quality control testers....USE EM!!!

@nunu_77 u just suck then, my friend bought one, it was bad, he called in, got one on the way....

@nunu_77 They are giving away a free game to those affected, and also not requiring the return of the broken system until after you receive your new system.  That is pretty good service actually.

Why would he when he's got people like you to do it for him. What, did he leave out one word?

@stoneface91 think you need to read the article again..... "currently there are a very small number of reported issues", and the ps4 had several issues and errors.

@BarkingSpider81

Ya, for sure, but out of curiosity, have we heard what kind of numbers are affected?  I have my XO coming this week and I'm ever so slightly worried :/

Gamespot always favored xbone. Since the early days.

@panaicman66 GameSpot are just sticking up for their fellow Americans. Plus MS probably paid them a dump truck load of cash as well. The site is riddled with Xbone advertisements. I feel very ill.

@midway_nights ryse was always going to be a failure but a pretty failure, since the company that made it has never made a game that wasnt shallow and boring. but hey people love the looks of games and their crap is sure pretty.

@torrne667 No, he's saying this unfortunate turn of events for the Xbox One is a rather fitting and karmic one, given how eagerly people were trying to naysay and fearmonger about the PS4 last week. It's only fair.

SacredGray
SacredGray

@pharoe777 @stoneface91 And the same exact phrase was said about the PS4, yet everybody was readily dismissing that language and laughing and gleefully proclaiming the PS4's launch a failure.

If you don't want to believe the "small number" quote, then it's only fair to believe the same for the PS4.

Karma.

stoneface91
stoneface91

@pharoe777 @stoneface91 still my statment is true it did shut up the xbone fanboys and lets face it launch issues where bound to happen for both systems in minor scales

themc_7

@panaicman66 @Garm31 on a 360 the drive pops out and you place the disc onto the tray, on the x1 the drive essentially eats the disc when you insert it half into the drive.

@SacredGray @joke_man @BarkingSpider81  "very low" is subjective.  Xboys said .04 was too much and was probably more than that.  Atleast Sony gave a number.  "very low" is just this one editors words based on what?

joke_man

@SacredGray @joke_man @BarkingSpider81

I assumed as much, but most of the video game "journalists" don't really report on actual figures and numbers (it seems, anyway).  Just a single video and "numerous" undocumented reports.  It's funny, they all run the same video from Youtube too...

@toffifee @panaicman66 @themc_7 @Garm31 It's fool proof, you can be the stupidest person ever, with disc feed you can't screw up, but it can screw up when the disc feed is itself faulty, though haven't heard anything from PS3 having happening those kind of stuff, on the other hand the disc tray is prone to more problems as the disc is loose on it, some would bump into their xbox 360 lightly and the disc was scratched like cat's scratching pole.

toffifee
toffifee

@panaicman66 @themc_7 @Garm31 This almost never happens if you aren't stupid. I have had my fatty PS3 since launch and not a single disc has been scratched.
