SOE shutting down four MMOs including Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures

SOE also announced its All Access pass, which will get you membership to all of its games for $15.

by

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it will stop supporting four of its massively multiplayer online role-playing games, Free Realms, Wizardry Online, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures.

"At Sony Online Entertainment, we are always evaluating our portfolio to ensure we're providing players with the best gameplay experiences," SOE's director of global communications Michele Cagle said in a statement. "At times, as part of this commitment, we have to make the difficult decision to sunset a game so we can refocus our resources on other areas in the best interest of our company and player community."

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms will shut down on March 31, 2014. Wizardry Online and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will shut down on July 31.

SOE also announced it's upgrading all individual memberships to its new All Access program, which gives subscribers top-tier membership level in EverQuest, EverQuest II, DC Universe Online for the PC, PlanetSide 2 for the PC, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (until it's shuttered), and the upcoming EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark.

All Access membership starts at $14.99, with extra savings for three, six, and one year plans. It will also include a 10 percent discount on marketplace purchases, 500 Station Cash per month, and access to exclusive promotions.

Finally, SOE announced that when All Access rolls out on April 2, it will also make the first Planetside free-to-play.

Sounds nice. Good way for Sony to capitalize on what they got and for those who don't spend all their time on one MMO to branch out. Are we coming to a time when MMOs are designed to be enjoyed casually with minimal time investment?

I wonder if my PERFECT copy of Vanguard collector's edition will ever be worth anything? Of course no one will be able to play it now, but it really is a beautiful package and will be a piece of history.

"three, six, and one year plans" Lol, you're able to buy membership for six whole years? That's crazy.

Wizardry and Vanguard are fun games.  This is why I don't care for MMOs.  I like going back and playing games.  Playing Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn this morning.  Unfortunately, when they close an MMO it is gone.  Forever.

Perfect example why forced online only digital no single player in the end will always be nothing more then a rental of product not ownership of the game like on a disc that you don't need the net to play.

Eh Dc Uni is waaay better! The new rage power is freakin hot! I love it! In 3 months, the new blue lantern power will be out Can't wait! The fighting style will be martial arts/kung-foo based. It also looks fantastic on PS4! woohoo!

They have way too many MMORPGs. They need to shrink their focus to just one and make it really good if they want success...

They're probably removing "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes" just because King came after them for using the word Saga.

Every time I see something like this all I can think of is how awesome SWG was and how much it sucks that it's no longer around.

It's pretty funny how they're like "We're shutting down these four games but you can buy an all access pass to whatever MMOs are left standing"

SOE will never be forgiven for brutally murdering SWG, the greatest mmorpg ever made.

Im probably the only one going to say this but seeing Vanguard going to be shut down is sad. That game had amazing potential and had the most immersive environments of any MMO Ive ever played.

Shame how hard it stumbled out of the gate due to various reasons. I will miss it.

Sony needs to save some money. Put those savings into EQ Next and PSVita exclusives. The only thing I'm playing is Planetside 2. I have no time to play all that other crap. Will give EQ Next a try once the beta starts. Let's hope they don't have to sell anymore buildings.

Also, this is why I don't spend a penny in FTP MMOs.. some people will have spend hundreds in that store.. only to be told it's now completely wasted. Imagine if you bought a car and then 5 years later they just came and took it off you and there was nothing you could do about it.

Mostly getting rid of the shit.. Except Vanguard, it's actually good now. It's a commercial disaster.. but it's a deep old school MMO that should have got more support and a better launch.

As long as Aion does exist I'm okay. That's the only MMO I kind of care about.

Vanguard being shut down is kind of surprising news. SOE is the one who saved that IP from shutting down six months after its launch.

Word is they are planning a SWG-esque MMO... perhaps this has something to do with it?

Well than you need to get up to date with current events in gaming and the history of gaming. Everquest revolutionized the MMO genre and Planetside brought FPS into MMOs.

@Wrathesoul

Kinda pointless to say since this is all MMOs.

In fact it's plain stupid to say.

@GamingSince96Heh. Yeah...King is pathetic. I am going to miss Vanguard: Saga of Heroes though, even with all the problems it had, it was still a great MMO.

@Sefrix Smed said they are working on a game like SWG but it's an original IP, theres still hope.

Then you should try Star Trek Online. It's almost identical, except for the lack of lightsabers and everything Star Wars related, but features wonderfull voice acting and it's a great experience for at least 60 hours or so. At least that's how much I've spent in it, but I'm not an MMO guy, so that's pretty generous of me.

Link3301

The games they shut down didn't reall have much going for them to begin with. Free Realm and Clone Wars were attempts at making kids MMOs. They failed because kids don't get into MMOs on the level that teens and adults do. Vanguard failed because it was released when WoW was dominating the industry. Vanguard didn't bring enough new to the table and WoW still felt fresh and new to many people.

@Mr_Ditters It was ahead of its time. I think SWG in its first iteration would be way more successful nowadays.

@Darth_AloysiusI thought EA inked out the all digital game rights to the SW universe with Disney.

@WolfGrey @Wrathesoul What is stupid is when I paid good money for the Star Wars Galaxies Collector's Edition.  Now it sits pretty on the shelf and I can't even play the game because they closed the server.  Why should anyone pay full retail and a subscription for a game that they will pull the plug on and you can't play the game you bought anymore.  MMO or otherwise.

Smosh150
Smosh150

@xsonicchaos STO is identical to SWG? Not to be a jerk, but that is absolutely absurd, it is a fun game and I still play it from time to time, and it is one of those F2P mmos that I would consider good and an actual success when it comes to the F2P aspect. When STO's main focus is ship combat, I can't see the similarity especially when SWG's ship combat is very different, even the ground combat is different in SWG.

Smosh150
Smosh150

@Wesleypipes77 @Sefrix Haven't checked up on that in awhile, is it comparable to how Pre-CU SWG was, I mean is it in a nearly the same state or is it still lacking in certain aspects?

lonewolf1044

@blackace@Darth_Aloysius Could be one of the reasons Stars Wars is getting shuttered or Disney will get some royalties like EA pays to Disney for making Star Wars products. Any new IPS that involves Star Wars more than likely have to go through Disney.

@Defender1978     I hear ya. my vanguard, tabula and warhammer collectors look pretty on the shelf too.

@Darth_Aloysius Thank you for that link, I would lov ea new sandbox mmo.

SWG had its faults (I hate randomly generated land design, and SWG used way too much of it) but it had some great sandbox elements, non instanced housing, freedom to make your character, the crafting/resources, etc.

I hope they announce more info soon about it.

@Darth_Aloysius this makes me very happy.. besides Ultima Online, SWG is the best mmorpg every made imo
