Sniper Elite 3 for Xbox One Has a 10GB Mandatory Day-One Patch

Retail version of Rebellion's shooter requires a mandatory patch that makes various improvements to the game and adds a compatibility pack for upcoming DLC.

The retail version of next week's shooter Sniper Elite III will require a 10GB day-one patch on Xbox One, developer Rebellion has revealed. This update makes various improvements to the FPS, and also brings the entire game's install size down to 19GB from 21GB, the studio told Eurogamer in a new interview.

The central purpose of the Sniper Elite III day-one update, however, is to "sync data between the game's retail discs and the Xbox Live digital download edition."

"In the several weeks between sending the code off to manufacture and release, rather than sit around or take a break, we've continued to work on the game, making improvements and optimizations," the developer said.

Rebellion says it has also started work on multiplayer DLC for Sniper Elite III, and explained that a "small part" of the game's 10GB day-one patch is needed to introduce a compatibility pack. "This is standard for any game that adds DLC--it's just to make sure everyone can have the same multiplayer experience whether they own DLC or not," Rebellion said.

A 10GB day-one patch is one of the biggest we've ever seen for a console game. For gamers wanting to jump right into the action on release day, this news is probably somewhat of a bummer, especially if your Internet connection isn't the greatest. Rebellion acknowledged this, and thanked fans for their patience.

"While we understand gamers will be frustrated at the wait, the good news is that the update will actually reduce the size of the game's total install footprint on their hard drive, and reduce the size of future patches significantly," the studio said.

"It's part of this ongoing optimization process that's enabled Sniper Elite III to perform well at a native 1080p on both Xbox One and PS4," Rebellion added. "We appreciate everyone's patience and we firmly believe Sniper Elite 3 will be worth the wait!"

The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 versions of Sniper Elite III will also have day-one updates, but they will be "much smaller," Rebellion said.

The 10GB day-one patch is required only for the first-run retail copies of Sniper Elite III. The update is not required for the digital version of the game, nor will it be for the next wave of physical discs that come to market. Sniper Elite III launches July 1 in North America.

Any game that requires a mandatory download on day one to even play the game offline is an unfinished product. I'll pass...

that is quite the patch. That just tells me that the game has some horrible programming. the horrible type programming to where when you release a patch to fix A,B,and C...it breaks D,E,and F. Then you will be getting patches to fix patches. This will be a wait and see game for me...and most likely a pass till steam sale.

No plans on getting this game anyways, so not really a big deal.

@jtsuth @themc_7 yes I read the article. Why aren't the digital copies and the shipped discs the same?

What's the big deal about the size of the update? Just buy a 1-2 TB HDD then you don't have to worry any more. That's what I'm doing as I've already nearly filled my 500gb already. Job done

I bought a 3TB. I should be good for years. Worth the money.

Question is when does the next wave of the physical disc come out so xbone gamers can save themselves 10gb of downloading to do.

how does a person play it then if they have no internets. is that not half the piont of a retail version coz they dont have the internets to be downloading.

its comapny slacking off and maxing profits. shiping products that are not at finalised state.

@EG-Mist "how does a person play it then if they have no internets."

They put the disc into the disc tray and install it? How about next time you read the full article before commenting?

@Warlord_Irochi @EG-Mist The 10GB day-one patch is required only for the first-run retail copies of Sniper Elite III. If they release future discs then you don't need to. But I doubt that the non-internet version of the disc will come on day one, give it at least few month. So you still need the net!

So the retail version is incomplete. 10GB aint just a regular optimization patch.

@AyatollaofRnR Is anyone reading the freaking article before posting saying it's incomplete??

I don't care about a patch. Patches to fix things are good. But an update is all ready for launch to prepare for future DLC? Sounds like another "Let's release half the game now for $60.00 and the other half in a few weeks for another $30+" fiasco. When will devs figure out DLC released sooner than 6 months or so after initial release really makes it look like just a cash grab. Most X1 games these days are around 30GB. This game is only 19GB after a 10GB patch? yeah right. They're holding back content for DLC. No thanks.

@chuckgenesis @nissanmaxima  I live in Canada. It's $60 here unless you download it. I don't do digital. Have to get it off Amazon I guess. If I buy it at all. DLC has been around forever and, when done right, its great. Borderlands does it right. Fallout does it right. Others, not so much. Some games, you just know they are holding back content that should be in the game just to release it later for more $. If people didn't buy it, they'd stop doing it.

nissanmaxima

This game isn't $60 pal. It's $50. DLC has been around for 10 yrs, not going anywhere unfortunately.

I don't see the big deal. After the game went gold, they continued working on X1 version because of June XDK update allowing more access to GPU if you aren't using all of Kinect features. They were able to get the game to 1080p after it went gold & sent for pressing. You people need to get a grip. If you buying digital, you don't need update, it's already there. Just for store disc. I got 4tb external hdd, but I'm getting digital version, so who cares about update for disc version. You got to install the disc on your console any way. You might as well have only digital version so you don't have to put the stupid disc in the console.

@nissanmaxima  lol blame the resolution whores who are all like "if it's not 1080p I'm not buying it"

pound-u

@zfazal84 @nissanmaxima  Or you can blame Microsoft for not making a system that can't handle a resolution that's been around for years.

kahnseal

@pound-u @zfazal84 @nissanmaxima  ummmmmmmm so explain why ps4 doesn't have 1080p on ufc since its 50% more powerful? lol. its just a fighting game. lol

@zfazal84 which kinda is most of the press nowadays.

therealzorvan

@zfazal84 @nissanmaxima No, us PC players are the "resolution whores". We also happen to be the ones laughing at your consoles pathetic attempts to get a mediocre 1080p that we have been playing well past for years now. 2160p or go home bitches.

iammcgruber

And have fun viewing that 2160p on your 20" monitor.

pound-u

@kahnseal  Except I'm not some Sony fanboy. I don't care what system it is, the fact that it can't do 1080p is ridiculous, and so are people like you that defend mediocrity.

pound-u
pound-u

@iammcgruber  What's the matter, jealous? 2160p is for bigger screens anyways. Cry more.

therealzorvan
therealzorvan

@iammcgruber Why would I do that when the 40 inch is much nicer? It's amazing the size monitor you can put on a desk nowadays. The 60 inch on the wall is even better. I bet you're one of those console peasants who never realized PC's have been able to be hooked up to televisions for  over two decades now. It's why I laugh every time one of you console schlubs uses the "I'd rather sit on my comfy couch than sit at a desk" as some sort of qualifier for consoles being better, when we PC gamers been able to do that the whole time. Wireless keyboard, wireless mice, *shock* we even had gamepads before your precious Xbot or PS. The humanity of it all!

Here's the facts, Jack. You don't see PC's bending over to become consoles, but you sure see the consoles bending over backwards while jumping through hoops to become PC's.

blackbeltjones

@Warlord_Irochi @blackbeltjones I was being sarcastic. I would rather have a patch that fixes things day one than wait a month and have already beaten a buggy game. I would rather have the better experience and deal with 10GB patches.

I hate next gen! 10 GB??? What the hell???

blackace
blackace

@brain20035 Most of the games are 5-15GB now anyways. All of them have to be installed on your HDD, so no matter what you still have to wait for something. It's not like cartridges anymore where you could just plug it in and play. It's more like PC's now.

eternaldragoonx
eternaldragoonx

actually has a patch for all consoles but who's counting ..right gamespot?

godslayer61
godslayer61

@eternaldragoonx lol your smart the reason is the x1 is a 10 gig patch the ps4 is only 2 gigs so ya that is huge compared to the x1. Let me guess you only own a xbox one so you need reassurance so you were thinking the ps4 was going to need a lame huge patch like the x1.
