Smurfs movie tie-in smurfed by Ubisoft

Publisher secures rights to make Wii and DS game to launch alongside August feature film starring diminutive blue forest creatures.

The upcoming Smurfs feature film already has a number of celebrities attached, with Neil Patrick Harris starring and Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters, and George Lopez providing voice work. The project gained one more big name today, as Ubisoft announced that it will be making the gaming tie-in for the film.

Smurfing a theater near you soon.

Ubisoft's Smurfs game is set to launch on the Wii and the "DS family" of handhelds around the time of the film's August 3 premiere. The game will be based on the film, which will combine live action with computer graphics to show what happens when the Smurfs and their nemesis Gargamel are magically transported to current-day New York City.

The Smurfs recently ended an extended leave of absence from the gaming world. After 2001's critically panned Smurf Racer! on the original PlayStation, the tiny blue men group stayed on the gaming sidelines for nearly a decade, finally returning last November as Capcom launched the microtransaction-driven, free-to-play Smurfs' Village for the iPhone, other iOS systems, and Facebook.

@ Sulaymanqazi2 It has nothing to do with Sony. Look at the setting they have for this. In our present time. I was hoping they would have left it set in the past. What made Smurfs work so well is that it was set in the time of knights, dragons and magic. This movie will suck and the games will suck. It doesn't matter who made it.

I had the Smurfs Go Pop on cassette tape.. Which included such classics as Mr Smurftastic, Smurfland, Smurfland Olymipcs, and not to forget Saturday Smurf. Quality tracks right there. As for the film well.. Let's wait and see. As for the game however.. Just no. Unless it was a 2D sidescroller where you used Smurfettes dashing good looks to distract gurads whilst you caved their face in with a house brick. An 18+ smurf game? Hell yes I'd be down with that!

Movie games usually suck, and I know a few as good examples. And this will probably be no different. The fact that the article mentions DS family and seem to miss mentioning the 3DS, it seems like they are too lazy to possible make an extra buck by putting it on a brand new handheld

Dear god! For one thing I do actually like the Smurfs, it was very kid oriented but the presentation and the new world it introduced us as kids was great. Now a movie!? Oh please...who came up with this? WHY did he or even she come up with this. Now a game! There is no stopping movie-tie-in-games but this has to be an exception. Plus UBISOFT! OH F*** we're in trouble. Dear Ubisoft, Please focus on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for the PC, Assassin's Creed 3, Zeit 3, R.U.S.E 2, heck even Rayman 5 or something...JUST NOT THIS!

They should limit these tie-ins to Arcade titles. Should cost a lot less and be done quicker and more efficiently that way.

You know your handheld has too many versions when they are referred to as a family.

The smurfs was good when I was a kid, that was.....well it was awhile ago.....Make a smurfing He-Man game or a good G.I. Joe game, not one based on a film. Of all the smufing franchises in the world they had to choose this one, Ahh.....Smuf it all to smurf!

Get the smurf outta here! Ah well figured it was only a matter of time 'til they made a game. But why so late? The movie is scheduled for this summer and they're just announcing now?? Already looks to be a lousy tie-in movie game.

ok so I get how this is a huge fail by Ubisoft, but did you really have to use "smurfed" in the title? kinda lame, just like this game is going to turn out to be.
