Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS April Nintendo Direct reveals Charizard, Zero Suit Samus, and more

Today's Nintendo Direct confirmed several new additions to the Smash Bros. roster including Charizard, Greninja, Zero Suit Samus, and Sheik.

by

The Smash Bros.-focused Nintendo Direct is happening today at 3PM PST. You'll be able to watch it live right here in this news story or at the official Nintendo website.

Will there be any new character reveals? Will we finally get confirmation of any characters from previous games? Stay tuned to this story for any potential character reveals when (and if) they happen!

In the meantime, who do you want to see in the next game? Let us know in the comments below.

Bosses

  • The Yellow Devil from Mega Man will be a boss character in the Dr. Wily stage.
  • Ridley from Metroid made a brief teasing cameo, implying he will also be a boss in the game.

Returning characters

  • Zero Suit Samus (now with jet boots).
  • Sheik
  • Both Sheik and Zero Suit Samus are standalone characters this time around, and that means you won't be able to switch characters mid-stage if you're playing as Zelda or Samus.
  • Yoshi (and now he stands on two-feet, rather than standing like a dinosaur).

New Characters

  • Charizard (and did you catch a glimpse of his Mega Evolution form?)
  • Greninja

What else happened during the Nintendo Direct?

Man I really want Mewtwo to come back.  I can see Sakurai messing with everybody and quietly putting him in the game and never announcing it, and then watching the internet explode once someone unlocks him by chance.  Here's for hoping...

I haven't seen Meta Knight yet. That is not OK...

I really hope Jiggly doesn't come back and Wii Trainer is kicked out

I can understand the concept of Zero Suit Samus and Sheik being separate characters but why Charizard? I kind of miss Pokemon Trainer and the other two Pokemon you got to play as him. And by adding another new Pokemon character makes the chances of a returning Pokemon like Mewtwo or Jiglypuff even smaller! I just knew that they would add in Yoshi eventually because he is one of the twelve characters to be in every single Smash Bros game up to date! I wonder when they will be adding Ganondorf, Meta-Knight, Captain Falcon, Ness, Falco, Ice-Climbers, Jiglypuff, and other veteran characters to the roster. And I cannot even believe hat they lied about not adding as much characters as they did in Brawl, but I'm assuming they are only adding as much characters in Brawl and not more, which means some veteran fighters will be removed. Well, I hope they release more characters soon!

It's kinda unnerving not all the originals from the 64 release are confirmed yet:

Nintendo, confirm my favorite character, or....

FAAAALCOOOON PAAAAAAWWWWWNCH

YES!

I think I both like and don't like that they made Sheik and Zero Suit Samus standalone characters this time. And I would like it if Skull Kid was a playable character instead of being just a trophy.

Can someone explain to me why they're making a version of this game for the 3DS?  Smash Brothers is about local multiplayer and the 3DS can't do that.  Do they really expect us to believe they've sorted out the online multiplayer and it won't be a lagfest like the Wii version was?

(Also Charizard isn't a new character)

Can't wait to get this on the 3DS!

"For Glory" mode shouldn't be limited to Final Desination.

It's been long established that this stage isn't entirely neutral, and can favor characters that are good at harassing with full-screen projectiles, such as Falco with his blaster short-hops.

Would have been better to mix in all the other tournament-accepted stages, such as Battlefield as well (which has platforms)

Though I do appreciate that Nintendo has recognized that the game CAN have a competitive side in addition to a casual side. There were many changes in Brawl that were outright attacks on competitive Smash players, despite there being no cost to casual play.

Hopefully this gesture signals a turn-around from Nintendo.

Charizard and Greninja F**k YES!

Sheik shouldn't be her own character. Really takes away from Zelda's fighting style and uniqueness.

Also pretty happy about the pokemon characters, but seriously, no Travis Touchdown or Bayonetta (yet)? C'mon Nintendo, they'd be perfect!

Mew Two, Banko, Snake, Crash Bandicoot, King K. Rool, Ridley, Bomberman, Tailes, Knuckles, Robotnic, Cloud -  would make this the PERFECT line up

no Ridley / no King K. Rool = major loss of interest

Nintendo better release a one handed controller along with that new Zero Suit Samus model.

I'm still hoping for Bayonetta or someone from Wonderful 101.

Arguably the two coolest starter Pokemon are in! I'd hoped of Greninja but it seemed unlikely I was more worried we'd end up with something like dedenne or unevolved rubbish. Great direct!

@YouEnjoyMyFluff  Jigglypuff is most likely to come back since it was part of the original 12 and what's wrong with Wii Fit Trainer?

@gordanchoong  What exactly did they lie about? They haven't revealed their full roster. Brawl had 35 characters(37 when you count the "transformation" of ZSS and Sheik, 39 if you count squirtle and Ivysaur). I've never seen a link that said that they would expand the roster to be bigger than brawl, so I would like a source to that, and they already have stated that some veteran fighters won't be returning, so you should expect that. That's what happened when Brawl came out, this shouldn't be any different.

@germainejgonzal  Why are you posting links to other websites to trick people. What a spammer and a troll for trying to advertise a website. I'm going to have to flag and report you to the staff shortly!

@jenniferleby  Yeah but I only pay her that much because she shows me her boobs. Not everyone wants to make a living that way.

@LtReviews they still got 6 slots to go if they even want to match the number line up for brawl, but I'm putting my money on them exceeding that since they are outdoing themselves in every other area. there are also very few new announced characters compared to returning ones, I have a feeling that they are keeping many secret characters unannounced until release.

@Tenko72  I think the perfect way to go would be letting players swap when they want during the fights, but not forcing the change with Final Smash nor taking away a special move for that.... make it an easy button combo or something like that instead.

@Tenko72  Skull Kid and Waluigi need to make the transition from Assist Trophies to playable characters. Both would make fine additions to the roster.

@Thanatos2k How does the 3DS not do local multiplayer? Take MK7 for example, it has a local multiplayer mode which works great for playing with friends or with tournaments. It doesnt really compare to having everyone on a big screen but you dont need a place to do it. you can just gather anywhere and play.

@Thanatos2k because the 3ds is the highest selling console and i plus everyone else who own one, will be buying it,

Also charizard is a new character

RabidBurp

@YouEnjoyMyFluff

Ridley is going to be a fight-able boss on one of the Metroid stages. Also there are far better characters (Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon, etc.) to include than King K. Rool.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@Mugzippit @Thanatos2kFighting games like Smash demand the absolute minimum in latency.  Any multiplayer over the air is not going to get you that split second reactivity.  The 3DS has no local multiplayer.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@sabne @Thanatos2kI distinctly remember using Charizard in Brawl!

It doesn't matter if the 3DS has a huge install base if the game isn't right for the platform.

TpaulH

@Thanatos2k @Mugzippit  The 3DS has local multiplayer capability through its IR, as seen in Pokemon, Mario Kart, Harvest Moon, and many other games. Whether or not Smash Bros. for 3DS uses the local multiplayer is a different story, but to say that the 3DS doesn't have that capability is just not true.

sabne
sabne

@Thanatos2k @sabne Charizard was not a stand alone character, he was part of a trio for the pokemon trainer, and if you ever played as the :pokemon trainer" you would know that each pokemon go weaker as time went on, so it forced you to switch between the 2, now charizard is a stand alone, so a new character, just like zero suite samus.

and how would the game not be right for the platform, it makes perfect sense, i am so happy i can walk around and play smash instead of only in my living room
