Skyrim PC Creation Kit due 'soon'

Bethesda missed its January launch window for the Elder Scrolls V modding tools, but says free add-on's Steam debut isn't far off.

Bethesda had no problem meeting the original release date it announced for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but the game's PC Creation Kit is proving a little more troublesome for the developer. After missing the modding toolkit's scheduled January release window, Bethesda today reiterated that the utility "will be available soon as a free download via Steam."

The Creation Kit will give players access to the developers' tools.

Designed to support the modding community, the Creation Kit gives gamers access to Bethesda's own development tools to make new Skyrim content. Likewise, Valve's Steam Workshop tool for Skyrim will aid PC gamers in finding and installing community-created game mods.

While the PC Creation Kit will no doubt spur the mod community for Skyrim, the game's do-it-yourself fan base isn't waiting for Bethesda's help in tinkering with the game. Check out the video below for a look at some of the game's earliest fan-made modifications and where to get them.

@Slash_out How am I attacking you? I simply voice MY opinion about your post. I do have the right to judge the worth of your complaint, just as you are judging my complaint about your post. It's not a one-sided coin. It's part of my opinion and is constitutional. Sounds like you simply made the mistake of assuming it would release on day 1, no one's fault but yours. I still don't see it being announced prior to the game's release as making it part of the $60, unless that's the only reason it was bought for.

@aryeec Sure you can. But you are attacking me for voicing my opinion. This is different. You did not make a constructive argument, you faulted me for making an opinion. And I believe, you are making a mistake. It is part of the package of the game. You need the game to play it, and it was announced with the game, and was never mentioned as coming later until release date. And even then there was no mention of it coming 2 to 3 months later we were left to believe it would take a fews days or a week or two. In those conditions, people buying the game can in good conscience assume it should be released with the game. Finally not being in the box does not mean it's not part of the package. This is the very same thing that happened with BF3 and BF1943 on PS3. And finally, sorry, you have no right to judge the "worth" of my complain :)

@Slash_out Your complaint isn't about anything worth complaining about and I don't see the creation kit as "paid for". Just because something extra is released after the game doesn't mean it was included in the game price. And, technically, for something to be part of the package of the game it would need to be released with the game. I too, as a customer, can voice my opinion.

cant wait to see what the pro modders will be able to do with this. so far the mods have been pretty impressive... just imagine it'll provide even more power to them

@zpluffy The fact that you think you're the only one negates that entire statement.

I'm one the rare PC gamer that is not a big headed looser who brags and talk crap like the world revolves around them. Yeah sure PC are stronger but don't talk like you are smarter just because you play games in your High Speed Pc and he/she plays xbox. in some games, I still prefer 360 just because of better community and environment.

Bethesda should really release the dev kit earlier. As a PC gamer who played heavily-modded Fallout and TES games, I don't even bother buying these games until the mod community has had a chance to settle in and a few good mods have come out. Playing without mods feels underpowered to me now, and I don't have the time to play through a game like Skyrim multiple times as new mods are released. My top mod source is still the Nexus Forums. I hope Steam Workshop just makes it easier to use mods and not screw with content, some of which are illegal to minors in most countries. I can't trust Steam, an incorporated business vulnerable to legal action, to regulate content.

What wouldn't surprise me is Steam's unwillingness to supply the Creation Kit along with the mods for free. It seems like these days every corporation worldwide is trying desperately to nickel and dime us all to death. Along with free enterprise comes an insatiable need for absolute greed. Got to love it as much as hate it.

Dante200X said: As always, the PC version of a bethesda game cannot be beat. The pros far outweigh any cons. @XanderZane: OF COURSE THERE ARE STILL BUGS! Sorry for caps, but my god...of course there are. It would not be a bethesda game w/o them. Years later there will still be hundreds of bugs (just like Oblivion and Morrowind to this day). There always will be...unless you're awesome and use the unofficial patch mods **************************************************** I don't think patch mods will fix all the bugs. Not all mods are perfect either. If all the other ES games are still broken on the PC, so will Skyrim. I was actually thinking more about the console version when I asked the question, as I know they had released a patch for it as well.

At least we should be happy they hit the original launch date. I didn't think they would.

SKYRIM is starting to bore me. Sorry Elder Scrolls, as much as i love Tamriel . SKYRIM iv ebarely gone back to. Its a grea tgame. I only finish Semi -open World games. becuase they hold my interest till the very end.

I'd really love a mod that lets a player create spells. The half-dozen for each element (in Destruction) that don't level with you just don't cut it for a high-level mage.

@aryeec Whine? I'm complaining about something legitimate. No the pack is not free, no it's alright to not be just thankful. To make use of the pack I paid the game. The kit is not a free handout. It is part of the package of the game. And as a customer, I am allowed to voice my opinion.

@Slash_out Be thankful that Bethesda is even giving us the creation kit (for free) and stop whining.

At least Bethesda is still citing a release and keeping us informed, unlike certain other developers... *coughs*id*coughs* @Cwagmire21 The 1.4 has Steam Workshop functionality incorporated, but the Creation Kit is still coming - details at Bethblog.

I just got a patch for Skyrim on Steam. Is this just 1.4 or has the kit been released now too?

The modding is good for people who really want to play this game forever and get more enjoyment from it. After 100+ hours however, I'll probably be done with it. I did like the mods and extra stories for Neverwinter Night, but I didn't go back and play those until 3-4yrs later. Are all the bugs fixed in Skyrim yet?

Modder community already did very impressive work without the Creation Kit.Can't wait to see how far will they go now :) @Syk0_k03r I agree,I don't like mandatory Steam DRM in games that weren't made by Valve, there should be an option to be able to play without it.Since I don't buy games digitally, most often I find Steam to be nothing more but an mildly annoying third-party DRM required to play some of my games...

Syk0_k03r
Syk0_k03r

Damn bethesda. The more they touch skyrim, the more they frak it up. How about getting rid of that mandatory steamworks, and let us mod skyrim the way we want to!

ugh i knew it would miss the deadline. they need to stop telling us "its coming out then" when they miss it. The darn thing should have came out when the game was released the later you wait the more people will have moved on to other games frustrating to have a company take forever to release the mod tools when it should be pretty much finished anyways considering the fact these tools were used to make the game....... dont understand the hold up. Guess it comes out "when its done". Way to go.

It would be nice to see more recipes. There's a lot of food items that aren't used in cooking at all. I'll see if I can make a recipe for skooma that has fun and nasty side effects, not like that watered down crap they sell in Skyrim! Also a drop gold mod so you can jump in piles of money.

I love mods that change the lighting, such as the sun, nightsky, dark nights, windows, torches etc. And yes our great modding community is what makes PC games an amazing experience.

They are taking too long. This should have been out with the game. What kind of pearl could have been released in thos past 2 months? Seriously Bethesda, you messed up, and this is not cool.

The mod community is one of the things that make PC gaming to be an amazing experience. I've been playing almost every game with mods, and they made these games even more amazing than what they originally were. System Shock 2, Fallout series, Oblivion, Stalker, GTA 4, etc. etc. All these games were enhanced using mods. Can't wait to see what the mod community will do with Skyrim. Even today there are great ones out there.

Is anyone truly surprised? It was clear several years back that the PC segment was much lower on their priority list than it was back in the days of Morrowind. The Creation Kit is (for the public), merely a sales tool now.

soon? SOON?! just the fact that there isnt a more specific date of a day or a week shows not to hold our breath. it was supposed to come out this week. and yeah: who needs steam when the nexus mod manager does exactly that. less pretty interface but it works well. the only thing i like about the workshop is that it shows how much beth is supporting mods. the complete opposite of almost every other developer (like UBI or EA or ACTIVISION).

supertom221

Dissapointing they didn't hold up on their promise, but I can't really blame them. The only reason it takes so long for the CK to be unleashed is because of Valve. F*** Steam. Who the hell even wants this stupid Workshop?! I'll take the Nexus over this anytime, thank you very much.

I'd actually checked steam today after noticing they'd appeared to have missed their "due in January" deadline. STILL! I'm prepared to wait a little longer! I'm too busy enjoying the community mods already available... playing skyrim, and DUAL WIELDING LIGHT SABERS! The Foresworn don't know what's hit them!
