Skyrim hailed game of the generation by Amazon UK

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim beats The Last of Us in final poll.

The UK arm of retailer Amazon has named The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the greatest game of the current generation.

Between June 1 and August 4, Amazon asked its customers to vote on the the games. The 16 finalists were then placed into two brackets of eight, with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Last of Us competing for the final vote. No specific numbers were attached to the voting process.

Amazon adds that PS3 exclusives The Last of Us and Uncharted 2 each received more votes than all eligible Xbox 360 exclusives combined. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood missed out on a top 16 finish by a single vote.

Amazon's 16 finalists were Batman: Arkham City, BioShock, BioShock Infinite, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 3, Far Cry 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, The Last of Us, Mass Effect 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Portal 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and The Walking Dead.

Skyrim was entertaining, but I wouldn't say it was the best game this generation.

I just don't understand the Skyrim hate and i also like Dark Souls and its mechanics and witcher 2 as well....

Even Witcher 3 dev saying their game is 20 per bigger than skyrim and DA : Inquisition people saying they want their game to be as open world  as skyrim ..

i know it has bugs but with dlc s and mods it is really a complete game

Skyrim was a briefly amusing sandbox and a horrible, horrible game. I regret buying it; the same goes for Oblivion. I will not be buying another Bethesda game.

Truly deserving of the title.

The amount of detail and intricacy that went into a game like skyrim.. its astronomical. People complain about glitches, but I dare them to try to make a game so massive, so open and so interactive, and do so flawlessly. I honestly feel it deserves it. The little details make the world and the interactions feel so real.. I found a suicide note next to a dead woman, who committed suicide as a direct result of my actions int he dark brotherhood. I've solved murders, and swayed the tides in a civil war-- Blotted out the sun with a bow belonging to a Deity. Delved deep into the bowels of an ancient dwarven city, and proceeded to steal the "eyes" a gigantic golden statue that consisted of gems bigger than your head. stolen everything of value from bustling capital city city. Assinated emporers, fought for and against demonic influence and corruption in the world. Forged armors and weapons from the bones of  dragons and the hearts of demons. I've witnessed a dragon swoop down fromt he sky, grab a Giant's Mammoth and tossed it hundreds of yards a way, only to then witness a battle between Giant and Dragon ensue. I've stalked the roads at night as a bloodthirsty vampire, seeking my next unsuspecting prey, and travelled the wilderness on all fours in the form of a werewolf.  Uncovered conspiracies, and aided rebellions.  The  Hundreds (thousands?) of books that are littered across the world are so entertaining, I feel like one could simply read books all day and have a wonderful time.-- And don't get me started on the expansions-- All quality. I have put well over 500 hours into this game through m,y "career" playing it and I am nowhere NEAR finished.

Granted they simplified it and took a lot of the diversity offered by previous elder scrolls games.. The level of detail, interactivity, influence a player can have.. If it werent for the numerous glitches and bugs that such a diverse, wide, open, interactive world brings.. I would say this game was perfect. I still remember the first time I saw the intro, Climbing the tower stairs when that dragon bursts through the wall as you attempt to escape.. I was hooked.

unbelievable... I'm a huge TES fan, but I would barely call it game of the year, let alone generation.

so what what if you put that much time? i can put the same amount of time on other games but it doesnt it wil be a game of a decade

O_O Well, it's a solid game certainly, but the best of this generation? This generation hasn't even ended yet! (though it will soon I guess) This reminds me of those car commercials in January that say "voted best of 2013!". Lol.

Skyrim was a great experience, though, but I have to say that it only lasted me about 90 hours at first. The fan-made mods are the real heroes here. They added about 200 hours to my play time (perhaps even more in the future) and really spiced up the vanilla game, which was in my opinion quite bland at times. Bethesda was smart to release the Creation Kit to help players make their own mods.

It wasn't for me. It glitched about 20 hrs in and I lost everything. Wasn't really that fun, I think

Skyrim and Fallout 3 over those two games? Are you high? Fallout New Vegas was better than FO3.

what skyrim did best: drawing media's attention about modding community. Before skyrim, modding isn't get much attention since people stereotyping that mod = making everything anime look alike and almost like a hentai (well it's still true... in some cases), now gaming website or media has its own section for mods. Even Steam Workshop won't be this familiar if it's not about Skyrim (and they tried to competing with Nexus)

Hurvl

Well, it certainly contains a lot of different stuff if you include the mods. Without the mods it's still a great game, but there's no way any game can offer the varied customizability that the mod scene can produce. Going from subtle changes, to completely new areas with lore friendly content to bizarre and hilarious additions, there is something for everyone. I think I'd nominate The Witcher 1 or 2 (haven't played no. 2 yet) as best of the generation.

I personally hated Skyrim, it's a half-assed game with below-average combat and it's riddled with bugs.

Starcraft II: Wings of liberty, Fallout 3, Dark souls, Super Meat Boy, Braid, Civilization V, Total War: Shogun 2. What am I doing here again?

And btw has this so called "generation" ended without all the big upcoming titles getting released?

Urizen316

Pretty sure Halo3 sold more copies than Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us combined. Hell I'm pretty sure Reach did that. And to be honest Uncharted en LoU did nothing new or remotely better than others.

Is this like that thing when Sony was showing off that PS3 had more online accounts than xbox? you know, the free ones where everyone had 3 or 4 accounts, one for each continent?

xer0615
xer0615

On second thought Its not right to say that "I dare them" to make a game so astoundingly wide and free-range.. I emplore anyone to find me a game that has achieved such a level of "sandbox"  openness as skyrim and done so without bugs

@Matthew Betancourt The only thing I liked more about oblivion is the creatoin process and the amount of skills.. I miss acrobatics. If they could just give skyrim the original elder scrolsl character/stat/skill setup, i'd love it even more

Also, oblivion faces + voice acting = lol

jonnybutler11
jonnybutler11

@Urizen316This has absolutely nothing to do with how many copies the game sold, they asked players to VOTE for the BEST games. By your logic, the top games on this list would be Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort, and COD Black Ops.

Hurvl
Hurvl

@sammoth @Hurvl From all I have seen and heard it just seems like The Witcher 1, but improved. So, yeah, I'm going to take a wild shot and nominate it as well, since I loved The Witcher 1.

Silly Doomguy-face. They can't count the PC because it doesn't work in "generations" like consoles.
Thus making this entire poll completely pointless.

Ridiculous polls like these are part of the reason games are still seen as a joke by other media...

ddoggbritt16
ddoggbritt16

@xer0615 the only thing i liked better about oblivion then skyrim was the glitch to get unlimited gold oh yeah and how you have to make your character in the beginning, how you only have certain skills to level up your character

max-hit

@Icepick_Trotter They use the term "generation" to convince casual gamers that they should feel the need to buy the upgraded version of their previous consoles.

Icepick_Trotter

@jonnybutler11 @Icepick_Trotter @max-hit
I certainly hope so. Because anyone who believes in the misguided concept of "game generations" sure isn't helping the cause.

I mean, what generation does Doom 3 belong to, then?
Certainly not the same as the PS2, yet it WAS on the original Xbox. Along with Half-Life 2.

And DotA? And Counter Strike Source? And anything in the Dreamcast?

jonnybutler11
jonnybutler11

@Icepick_Trotter @jonnybutler11 @max-hit I disagree, polls are harmless, I don't even think anyone who thinks of gaming as a joke is aware of this poll... If things like the MTVVMAs can happen then a poll paying hommage to the favourite games of this gaming genereation is irrelevant in the legitimization of gaming as an artistic medium.
