Skullgirls DLC crowdfunding page hits $190K in a day

Campaign page also details new DLC character Squigly as well as other potential characters via stretch goal details.

The developers at Lab Zero Games have opened a Skullgirls DLC fundraising page over on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, with the sole purpose of using the money to release DLC characters for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC fighting game.

Concept artwork for the Skullgirls DLC character Squigly.

The target goal is $150,000 with 30 days left before it closes. The page has so far raised $191,175.

Not only does the campaign page feature a breakdown on one the upcoming characters (the undead opera singer Squigly), but also a list of stretch goals if the campaign’s target reaches beyond its goal. These include potential new DLC characters like Big Band and B.Dahlia, and new stages and story mode missions based on the DLC characters.

The perks for contributing varies: $5 will net gamers exclusive Skullgirls wallpapers while $400 will net contributors a limited edition of the game’s soundtrack, a random postcard-sized sketch, a “booster” title in the contributors credits, a Steam code for the PC release, and other benefits.

Squigly will be available for free for a limited time if the campaign is fully funded. For even more information, check out the Indiegogo page.

Skullgirls was praised by critics for its fighting system, distinctive characters, beginner-friendly tutorials and GGPO network options.

If they allow couch multiplayer to play against your friend and not online only for PC I might get this game. Sucks to see that in 2013 PC still has 0 split-screen game when the SAME game will come out for console with split-screen allowed..........

I don't quite understand this. It is my assumption that the game sold well. Obviously judging by the kickstarter there are plenty of people who bought the game if it raised so much. Couldn't they have used the money they made from the game to make DLC like all the other companies? I find it hard to believe they didn't make any money off the game.

I'm happy this smaller fighting game is getting the love it deserves.

I'll be getting the PC version of this.

I don't understand why the 'fighting game community' as they like to call themselves is boycotting this game because it doesn't have enough attention to be on the spotlight at EVO.

If it's a great game, does it really matter?

Now that's a sensible kickstarter project, free timed dlc in all regions, unlike others;

of topic
place project on kickstarter= gets money
release project and place in app store( free with adds = gets money OR 0.999 = STILL gets money)
then put in app purchase = OVERKILL!! no wonder EA wants to tap some of that :p

I dropped Skullgirls due to the overwhelming wait for a patch that would force me to relearn all of my combos, and when it finally dropped, it was too late.

May buy the PC version, may not. I need to go back to this game at some point.

I hope people support this. Skullgirls is a sublime little fighter that desperately needs more love, in my opinion.

I own the console version, but I'll probably get the PC just to support Lab Zero for their very hardworking game. Can't wait to play Squigly!

@Strider8009The developer clearly states "[character DLC] will initially be released free to everyone on all platforms, and the price will be increased to $5 three months later for anyone who hasn't picked it up yet. So don’t worry - if you get it while it's free, it'll stay free forever."

I don't see this as "ruining fighting games" - I see it as rewarding the early supporters (because they get the DLC for free!)

@megakick It is really pretty though. Look at the animations and hand drawn artwork.

@Sefrix I'm guessing it's because of this: "Skullgirls financial support was simply cut off as a result of a costly legal battle that was strangling our publisher, Autumn Games. These ongoing legal difficulties kept Autumn from being able to continue its support for the game. We always had big plans for Skullgirls, and hoped to keep growing the game and its community with new characters and game updates, but without funding, these plans unfortunately had to wait."

That legal battle was probably this: http://www.gamespot.com/news/def-jam-rapstar-publishers-sued-for-alleged-fraud-6378403

It makes sense.

@FuryX-4 Is the PC version free of the former publisher issues? currently Lab Zero dont see a dime of any digital copy purchased on PSN or Live do to the lawsuit that Autumn Games is facing.

Lab Zero is like Tony Stark, supporting their game in a cave with a box of scraps... literally.

@Xplode_77 @megakick Is not only pretty, it's actually very deep mechanic wise, is just that the style is not appealing for the muscle-mac-huge people that play most fighting games.

At least it's finally getting released in Japan so it will get a decent exposure in a more fitting market.

FuryX-4

@Nezard I....think so. PC version will be handled by Marvelous AQL so they could be free from publisher I guess.
