Siren to make noise in Hollywood

Spidey director and The Grudge production house grab rights to make movie based on Sony's survival-horror game.

by

The line separating the movie and game industries, previously dubbed "blurred," is now a full-on smudge. With Silent Hill ready for release this April, hot on the heels of January's BloodRayne, film adaptations of games are becoming commonplace, particularly in the action-horror genre.

The latest interactive spookfest on course to make a splash on the big screen is Sony's Siren. Ghost House Pictures, led by director Sam Raimi (both Spider-Man films, the Evil Dead franchise) and producer Robert Tapert (The Grudge, Xena: Warrior Princess), has purchased the game-to-movie rights from Sony, according to movie trade Variety (subscription required).

No director or cast has been attached to the movie yet. Penning the screenplay will be Michael Gordon, author of Warner Bros.' upcoming 300, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. Joining Raimi and Tapert on production duties will be Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment (The Grudge, The Ring 2), and Ted Adams and Rick Privman will executive-produce.

In the movie, an American medical student will search for her missing sister in Japan. Her investigations lead her to the village of Hanuda, where evil has taken hold of its citizens. Shooting is expected to begin this year.

Siren was originally released in Japan in late 2003 on the PlayStation 2, with the North American version hitting stores in April 2004. A sequel, Siren 2, is scheduled for release later this year. For more information on Siren read GameSpot's review.

well, almost 6 years later and no Siren movie. Looks like another failed "game to movie" project.

Raimi is generally pretty good, but there tends to be a certain level of campiness to his horror films. I wonder if Bruce Cambell will be involved?

they will have fun making the movie.....but not much fun going bankrupt when no one goes to see the movie.

Probably going to be more like "The Grudge" than anything else. Same people involved. Hopefully it won't star the goofy Raimi brother (who is okay in comedic stuff, but doesn't really fit serious horror). So what's left? Fatal Frame?

It could be a great lience to make into a movie. and as long it's not derected by Uwe Boll. so I wouldn't say it's gonna be that bad like all the other game-based movies sense that this is not going to be action-oriented like the others and it's a good idea in the premise of japenese horror films.

Let's bring up Uwe Boll only when it's a movie he's making and try and disassociate him with the video game-movie business. All I'm saying about this is it can be good, but I'm gonna be pissed if it doesn't have Japanese actors.

XlpranksterlX - Uwe Boll is not involved in this one so its not going to be as bad as the other ones. And by the look of the crew its going to be a good movie.

Could be good. . . for a horror/suspense flick.

if the spidey movies are any indication, then it has great potential. Never saw the Grudge but I did see the Japanese version.

Hey paradyme777, did you see this ACTUAL quote from the article? "No director or cast has been attached to the movie yet." Just curious. Anyway, With ghost house on board, its going to be good.

uhhh....excuse me, but wasn't this game bad? It got a lousy score from the gaming press, so why make a movie out of it? Talk about being cash cows.

Oh my God! Did Uwe Boll actually MISS an opportunity to bastardize another game-to-movie adaptation? Hell must be freezing over. Anyway, Sam Raimi is a competent director and I'm sure however this movie turns out it will be leagues ahead of anything that disgracing hack Boll could have masticated and spewed back out.

^^^ Sam Rami hasn't been named director. It's just his company doing it. At least it takes place in Japan.

cool. At least it has a good director.

With Raimi and Tapert involved, this should actually be a good game movie.
