Silent Hill: Downpour falling on consoles in Q3

Eighth full instalment in veteran survival horror franchise due in the third quarter of 2011.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Konami debuted what it was then calling Silent Hill 8. Reports earlier this month indicated that the title was to be called Silent Hill: Downpour and was in development at Czech developer Vatra Games.

You too will be able to take in the sights of Silent Hill later this year.

Those details have now been officially confirmed by Konami, along with another morsel. Gamers can expect to get their hands on the title sometime during the July-September quarter this year, with near-simultaneous releases expected in Europe and North America on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Downpour will be the first new instalment in the Silent Hill franchise in almost three years. The last instalment, Silent Hill: Homecoming, came out stateside on September 30, 2008, but didn't hit European consoles until February 27, 2009.

The game puts the player in the shoes of lucid-dreaming convict Murphy Pendleton, though gameplay and narrative details are still scarce. As with all previous instalments, Silent Hill: Downpour will be a third-person survival horror title, and water will play a prominent role.

LOL. Alan Wake is an extreme inspiration for this game - nothing from Original Silent Hill games nor a great atmosphere is present. And the being dev"d by Euro studio. What the f*** they know about true Japanese-styled survival horror? A big Downfall there will be... P.S. Stopped playing SH after forth installment. Though Shattered Memories I have enjoyed much.

I hope Silent Hill Downfall----I mean uh Downpour takes a step in the right direction this time. I loved Shattered Memories, and of course, SH1 and 2.

i just hope that this new silent hill game can deliver something new while also trying to stay true to its roots! I am really hoping it doesn't turn out to be another dud after all this time. I liked homecoming, just thought it was a bit too hard at times, still freaks u out though!

@TheGreyArea Yeah, i haven't played Homecoming or Origins, i wanted to try Shatter Memories but to much to buy right now, i'm a huge fan of the first 4, so i hope SH returns to it's roots, a nice scary game.

looks like a convict that needs to atone for past deeds. Looks like the basic silent hill which is a good thing.

I played and love all the SH games. I hope I love this one too.

They probably did not learn from SH:SM, which was amazing, and will return to the mediocrity that has been plaguing the franchise.

Death_Blade_182 The developers have stated multiple times in interviews that Pyramid Head will NOT be in Downpour.

I hope Konami decides to release a PC version that's open to mods. That would be amazing.

Here's hoping they don't add Pyramid Head out of fanservice, it completely kills the purpose of the character.

I honestly have high hopes for this developer.

I've been following Silent Hill ever since the original game and its kinda sad to see the game keep switching developers like this, but I hope these guys know what their doing. I'm keeping my eye on this one.

@madsnakehhh, I totally understand and respect that view. The SH series was built around a concept that much easier for an average Joe like us to identify with. Dead space oozed with style from a different end of the pitch. I'm a fan of both. My greatest hope is that the glorious punished Mr pyramid head is given way more respect in downpour than he was awarded in homecoming (you seem quite at home with the SH series dude? From one lover of the early games to another, if you haven't Played homecoming yet, maybe try and avoid it and preserve the good experiences of the early games a little by doing so)

jonluke shattereed memories is easily the worst game with the title silent hill I have ever played. In fact it is the worst game that I have ever played, no combat, was not scary, terrible story, horrible graphics, list goes on how can you say that was a great game when you never even combat the enemies which was the fun part of the past silent hill games? Oh you can choose not to though gotta mention that. Sorry you must have horrible taste in horror games if you think a game like shattered memores which completely changes teh original story is any good...no

Silent Hill 2 was one of my favorite silent hills ever, maybe this other developer will be able to bring back what silent hill was known for....Creating a dark sadistic ambiance that makes you not want to play in the dark!

Here's hoping that this one has an inverted control option.....

The old SH games should get a HD collection. Quit switching developers and milking a once great name.

Can't wait. This is the only realistic prospect for a good blockbuster survival horror title that I can see. Except Dead Space 2. *spit*

@magicalclick I generally agree with you. Although I loved Silent Hill: The Room for the sheer unpredictability of it. Resident Evil 2, Code Veronica, and RE:4 nailed freshness too.

magicalclick
magicalclick

Personally I believe horror games are more at core tied with freshness. New unknown that keep you at your toe. However, the more you milk the frenchise, the less it seems to be interesting because the core mystery is known already. Ofc if it happens in real life it is still super horrofying, but, not as a game that you know you are playing anymore. I much prefer them to make a new setting that we will learn this new force of evil instead of the same foggy hill.

Hopefully it is good, and by good I mean amazing.

I saw somewhere that they're using the guy who composes the music for Dexter in this game (can't remember his name off the top of my head). If so, then at least they get a guy with a proven track record of quality composition of music that has an eerie vibe to it. Still gonna be impossible to come close to Yamaoka though :/ his music was really the heart and soul of all of the Silent Hill games.

@TheGreyArea I was really dissapointed with Dead Space, don't get me wrong, is a very good game, however i was expecting a horror game instead of an action game, it has some really intense moments and its fun to play, but it wasn't the horror title i was expecting, so that's why i'm more excited with SH8, i guess is more my kind of horror.

ChiefMac88

No Yamaoka? No thanks. The series has been dead for a long time already anyway. Maybe I'll check it out if I hear good things.

I remain cautiously optimistic about this one...meanwhile Silent Hill 2 will always be one of my favorite games of all time, what an immersing experience that game was. Much love James!

TheGreyArea
TheGreyArea

@madsnakehhh that's a bold statement dude. And I am going to give you thumbs up, but would point-out that deadspace and silent hill are both brilliant games for different kinds of atmospheres they wield. Silent hill has always been more like a "Jacobs labbder'esque" mind-bender. Where as Deadspace throws it down Event horizon / The thing style sci-horror. Two different hearts. Silent hill 2 remains one of my top 5 games ever. just on merit of it's nightmarish, heartbreaking, engrossing tale. classic. I hope Downpour and gear-up some of that lost glory, I really do.

Will Downpour be compatible with the PS MOVE much like Shattered Memories with the Wiimote? The latter proved that a motion controller was excellent for controlling the flashlight.

Many may take this bad, but IMO, SH>>>>>Dead Space or any other Survival Horror based on RE4, i just love the atmosphere on this games, even 4 have a great horror feeling, never played the last SH games, but i hope this is as good as 3.

Didn't care for Homecoming much. Shattered Memories was awesome though. I hope this game is good.
