Sid Meier's Ace Patrol hitting PC today

2K and Firaxis Games announce World War I-set strategy game coming to PC today through Steam for $10.

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol--a World War I-set strategy game from the Civilization series designer and industry veteran--is coming to PC today through Steam, 2K and Firaxis Games have announced.

The game will be available today on Steam for $10 and is a "premium version" of the free-to-play iOS game that launched in May 2013.

"The overwhelmingly positive response from both fans and media alike surrounding the launch of Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol has made it impossible to ignore the title's potential," said 2K SVP of marketing Sarah Anderson in a statement.

The game was conceived, designed, and programmed by Meier himself. In Ace Patrol, players pilot vintage aircraft and must defend their base camp and allies from invaders.

In addition to a turn-based single-player mode, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol offers two-player multiplayer either locally or through asynchronous play via Game Center.

Looks like a game that would be better on an iPad than the PC.  Has anyone played the iOS version?

Must buy, beats trying to find folks to play Wings of War / Glory.

Wow, WW1 looks like a lot of fun!

Never mind the fact that the real pilots had to choose between burning to death or jumping to their death, because they had no parachutes back then. Those smiley faces on those pilots about to meet their doom - looks like they've all taken LSD.

Let's waste all that potential to make a real WW1 simulator and turn this into a low-budget arcade shooter.

I'm glad no one who flew a plane in WW1 is alive to witness this.

this exact type of game exists in some form or another for FREE on free online game sites like kongregate.  This isn't an advertisement i just don't want people paying for a game that has existed for free for a while now.

Thought was a Flight sim with cartoonish graphics ..

anyway i'm interested... but i'll have to see the reviews first... and maybe pick it up during a Steam Sale ;D

Overwhelming response??  This is the first I've ever heard of the game.  (Though it reminds me a bit of an old paper & pencil game from back in the 80's...)

Glad this game is being released properly, though I'm annoyed with Meier for dabbling in F2P. Also I'm pretty sure the concept of this game is borrowed from the Steambirds flash game, cheeky Sid.

Bah, wish I've never came across this article. Now I'm refreshing steam page like an idiot hoping for it to show up. Damn you Gamespot.

A pleasant surprise...I had no idea that Sid Meier had this game in the works.

Another $10 to $15  game that will be better than most of the $60 dollar garbage being released.

@frijolesmp Because it is turn-based and has planes shooting at each other? Or were there specific game mechanics that were copied?

@Lerry757 you lost interest? why? is it the first time you buy a game? isn't paying 10 bucks more preferable than microtransactions?

Timmy_Gwar

@Lerry757 Yeah, but anyone who played Pirates just had to read "Sid Mei..." and they were already checking their steam wallets.

@jonny_dutch Hell yeah, the both have old planes. They shoot at each other, because there's a war. And it's got heroic music. Clouds...

@blutosan Supposedly he just showed up at work one day with most of the code.  Then he had the Firaxis team create some real graphics for it and polish it up.

The game is pretty fun on iPad.  Definitely worth $10 on Steam.

@Whiskey3romeo So true. And while I'll be playing this game for 10 bucks, most of the gamers crowd will keep complaining on AAA articles that "gaming has become way too expensive because there are no good games below the 60$ mark".

@Rotondi I prefer saying that Sid is King. Actually, he's Gods and Kings.

@anigmha @frijolesmp bah! my apologies i stand corrected.  That is the wrong game the correct one is simply called steam birds not steam birds:survival.  But that just goes to show you that you have variety for free/

frijolesmp
frijolesmp

@anigmha @frijolesmp game mechanics arent exactly the same but yes they are both turn based airplane games with you controlling multiple planes to defeat multiple enemy planes.  Both have missions with different objectives. With not much to offer. its fun as a time waster game, maybe worth two dollars like most apps on you phone but not worth dropping ten dollars when you can get the same kicks for free.(yes, i have played both, this one on my phone and the other at the link posted.).

jonny_dutch
jonny_dutch

@CincoToes @jonny_dutch Well, if I remember correctly, time stops and you draw a route for each of your planes - then time plays out for 10-odd seconds and you do it again, like a turn-based strategy but where both players move at the same time... the only major difference is that this game operates in 3D... so unless Steambirds ripped it from someone else, and they might have, the system does appear borrowed.

Tommy7600

@Hekteur @Rotondi He's definitely have a long legacy behind him. I remember playing his games when he still worked for Microprose on my Amiga.

DoctorTanaka
DoctorTanaka

@Tommy7600 @Hekteur @Rotondi I downloaded the Microprose release of Pirates! from GOG. I'm partially red-green blind and I'd forgotten about the treasure maps so I'm like, "Honey! Can you find the big red 'X' on this treasure map for me, puh-leese?"
