Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies revealed

World War II-set sequel to strategy game from Firaxis Games coming to Steam and iOS this fall; no word on Android version.

2K and Firaxis Games today announced Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies for Steam and iOS devices. A sequel to May's strategy title Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, the World War II-set game will be released this fall. Pricing was not announced.

Like the original, Pacific Skies was developed by longtime Civilization designer Sid Meier.

The strategy game is set in the skies above the Pacific Ocean and draws inspiration from war stories of "famed military aviators," though none were named.

Players can customize their pilots and aircraft while journeying through a "wide variety of missions." Special skills, upgrades, and maneuvers can be unlocked through play.

Gamers can pilot American and Japanese fighter planes and complete tasks that are set during historical battles like Pearl Harbor, Midway, and Guadalcanal.

No mention was made of a release for Pacific Skies on Android or Windows Phone devices.

Sid Meier used to make good games.

Now he's just a brand.

Sid must have burned out developing AAA titles...Railroads was a sad joke. The last decent game he did was the Pirates remake and I don't know how much he contributed to that. I'd love a new Pirates, a new SimGolf, and a remake of F-117 updated to modern graphical standards but retaining the same realism-light style. Heck, I'd love a remake of almost anything he's done prior to about 2005 over this recent stuff.

Sid, you should create new franchise, big expensive game, not iOS app. :(

As a fan of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd and the silent movie greats, what a fantastic trailer. Had me laughing out loud at a bunch of parts. Pay attention, trailer people... those Gamestop machinima commercials do absolutely nothing for me.

I'd love to see Firaxis do a space themed sequel.

This game is freaking awesome. Can't wait they reach contemporary fighters.

Based upon the previous game, it will basically be a f2p game with a LOT of stuff you will have to purchase to make the game worth while. It looks pretty and seems to play well. My thing is that it is just a SIMPLIFIED variation of so many similar games that have been out there for years. It may be a good entry level game, but it is not something that I would be interested in for more then one play through....and I am a huge aviation fan.

Turn-based dog-fighting done right.  Glad to see more is on the way.

Sid Meier's presents I Had Nothing to do With This Game

They should just keep updating Sid Meier's Pirates every few years with some new gameplay elements.. I'd buy that.

Sid Meier still exists? Oh right. I refuse to acknowledge Civ. Pirates and Alpha Centauri, on the other hand, yes.

I've never played ace patrol, but I love the Civilization series so I'll have to check this out and the original.

@Gruug The game is pay for content, not freemium or pay to win.  It's more of a demo + episodic content style of F2P, which I greatly prefer to the style a lot of other games take.

@Gruug You only have to pay for extra campaigns/factions. The main focus of this game is the multiplayer, and there's no microtransaction that enables you to Pay 2 Win. What is wrong about a great free game? Developers don't pay their bills with nice internet comments, you know.

@super_tramp_tri Sid Meier did pretty much the entire game on his own time.  He gave it to his team to put real graphics and sound on it, but the gameplay is all his.

@meatz666 @Gruug Never did I mention "P2W". The "campaign" as it is is pretty short in the f2p side which means you are going to have to purchase more in order to keep this game from going stale. MP is not that interesting to me in this game. Nothing is wrong with a "great free game", however you get what you pay for. And although Sid's name is on this game, it is not something HE designed or had much of a direct hand in.
