Shippin' Out March 15-21: GTA: Chinatown Wars, Resistance Retribution

Big-name DS and PSP installments face off alongside Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, Ready 2 Rumble Revolution, and Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure.

Just days after Jon Stewart and CNBC's Jim Cramer faced off in the Weeklong Feud of the Century, two other bitter rivals will face off. In this case, the antagonists will be the PSP and DS, each of which will receive a triple-AAA release on March 17. The former will see the debut of Resistance Retribution, the portable debut of Sony's critically lauded PlayStation 3 sci-fi shooter series.

Though advance buzz on Resistance Retribution is good, it will be facing the 800-pound gorilla that is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The first DS edition of the planetary phenomenon--the last console installment of which has shipped more than 13 million units--is receiving rapt early word-of-mouth praise. Previewers have been impressed by Rockstar Leeds' re-creation of four of Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City boroughs--Broker, Dukes, Bohan, and Algonquin--and its numerous minigames, which include drug dealing, automobile hot-wiring, sniper-rifle assembly, and ripping apart vans to find contraband.

Last up on the portable front is Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, Electronic Arts' puzzle adventure hybrid for the DS. Like Level 5's Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the game follows an inquisitive scholar who must solve all manner of puzzles during the course of an adventure. However, the EA Tiburon-developed game also incorporates platforming action as well as a dose of the surreal in the form of an alternate puzzle world.

Is that a DS in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Last but not least, Nintendo fans will be able to get their virtual soccer on courtesy of the second Wii installment in Konami's long-running sport sim series, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. The game will feature new Wii Remote-based controls to improve passing and shooting, and also supports more traditional play with the Wii Classic Controller. It will also support co-op play for up to four players.

Check back later in the week for GameSpot's reviews of the week's debuts. For a full rundown of every new game, check out the New Releases page.

GTA on DS, looks like it'll be sweet. Henry H puzzle? Could it match Prof Layton?

Wow, a GS reviewer actually gave a game higher then a 9. And here I thought the 9 was the new 10. Chinatown Wars got a 9.5, I guess that 'has' to mean something. Too bad I was never really into the GTA series.

@ UB725 , u said the majority of ds owners are between ages 14-16 lol....eeeeeekkkk....WRONG !!!! it is obviously u haven't done ya research...check the survey and u will find adults owns a huge % of the ds systems out there and now that Nintendo is bringing in more mature games than ever...look @ the Wii flooding with super violent games such as MadWorld,House of the Dead: Overkill etc....who would ever thought the Big N would be so freakin' Cool...

TO khoofia_pika, when I said earlier that GTA:CW will sell more DS systems" I meant DS in any of its form ( ds,ds lite or the new dsi)....I know of quite a few people who reserved "gta + dsi" together at gamestop......the game already received near-perfect score ratings from many game sites critics...trust me it will sell more ds....b.t.w I am not a nintendo fanboy and i owned a psp(it's o.k)...but like the ds just a little better...it just my opinion that's all....

I personally liked the new direction GTAIV went. I know they cut out lots of side quests and mini games but the story and detail put into character development was much much better than any of the other previous games. Hopefully Chinatown Wars does not do this, because portable games IMO need to be quick, fun and have lots of replay value. So for this one I think Rockstar should go back to their roots and allow crazy mini games and side quests that have us entertained in a less engrossing manner.

I am sure that GTA will be boring just the IV was. I do not know how it got such a high rating, 98 on Metacritic is insane. I guess ratings can hype too.

To hi-buzz, lol you say that GTA will be more popular among adults when the majority of people who play (from what I've seen with my friends) are kids from 14-16 lol and with the mature rating that shouldn't be approved but whatever the parents say I guess. Plus, the violence is bad but not AS bad as it was in GTA4. Consider.. Cartdridge V.S. Blu-Ray/HD Disc XD It gets that mature rating from the big part dealing with drugs I'm assuming.

the top dwn view is such a better way to go for the handheld versions of this game. the psp versions should have been this way too. the whole one analog stick killed any decent camera control.

(1) There are more DS's out there than PSP's (2) GTA is ; although Resistance will sell well, GTA is bound to break sales records. I don't think this is a competition at all. I believe both games are selling for $40 (at least for this week). At least there's a demo for Resistrance:Retribution available on the PSN. That may help people decide which game to get. _

solidstein, yeah, that's correct. But people who want handheld experiences will go for the DS. And people who want to go for the console experiences will go for the consoles. Why buy a handheld for a console experience if you can buy a console itself!

GTA:CT is going to be just what the ds needs to become the all-time best seller system. Good for Nintendo

@khoofia pika: i agree with 90% of your statement but what i disagree with is that we buy handhelds for a different experince i know me and my friends have handhelds so we can have a "console like play on the go" of course though it is fun to play different games and the DS does that with its two screen stylus play so i would have to say if you want something different from a console get a ds and if you want an abbreviate version of a console get a PSP

xXZak-ataKXx: "resistance is gonna be better than GTA for the DS. I like the psp a little better anyway." I can believe that first part about RR being better than GTA but the PSP being better than the DS is all crap. The PSP USED TO BE better than the DS in terms of media functionality, but after the DSi, there's nothing that the PSP can do and the ds CAN'T. In fact, apart from doind everything that the PSP does (and doing it waaaaaaaaay better), the DSi does much more. Now, it's the PSP which needs to catch up in terms of media functionality, games, hardware quality.... well, everything. Okay, the PSP is getting a lot of great games, and already has a decent number of good games on it, but none of them, apart from maybe LocoRoco, LocoRoco 2, Lumines and Patapon, NO OTHER game offers anything different than what we can play on the PS3 or the XBox 360. An different games is what we want when we buy a handheld. If we want a console experience, we can play consoles, there's no need to buy a handheld. The PSP tries to simulate console experiences, and fails at that most of the times. So, whereas, stand-alone, the PSP is a very good console and is worth the bucks we throw away for it, compared to the DS, and especially the DSi, it's nothing but a mere patch. @ hi-buzz, Dude, the Resistance series is quite mature. Okay, GTA provides a very addictive experience, but RR's gonna be great too. The DS already has a ton of great games so another game won't make a lot of difference. And GTA:CW is not going to be a system seller because there are not much people left who don't have the DS :P. But RR is gonna be a system seller as its gonna be a good game, which is a refreshing change for a PSP title, and because its gonna attract those gamers who don't have the PSP. What I'm trying to say is that while GTA:CW might sell more than RR, but its not gonna help DS in terms of sales as much as RR is gonna help is gonna help the PSP in moving units (and people are finally gonna dust their PSP's after about a year or so :P). And by the way, I'm a Sony fanboy.

What is Rockstar's logic in building these singly-based platform games? I'm not running out to get a DS in order to play it.

@hyperkass. The DS GTA is supposed to be pretty good. Some early reviews are all positive, and previews from Gamespot are all positive as well. At the very least it will probably get a 7. I predict an 8-8.5 myself.

@ dr_jashugan You really need to sit down and actually play the game, it is pretty much just like the more modern GTA games but with the upward view. Chinatown Wars actually has more in it than GTA IV did, from drug dealing (yes you are actually buying and selling in this one, running around finding buyers and dealers), to having the old police, ambulance, taxi cab, and fire truck missions, to buying multiple safe houses, and even the touch screen bits work amazingly. This is a real, true blue GTA game, there are no shortcuts here, corners cut, and nothing feels toned back. As you go through the city it feels like a you are going through one of the console versions, you can see helicopters flying in the sky, weather changes, all kinds of different vehicles cruising about, people going about their lives which all the time you come across different things going on from vehicles burning and fire fighters responding, people hurt with an ambulance responding, even people fighting amongst themselves. The GPS system works well as does the PDA displayed on the bottom screen, it has nearly all of the functionality of the console versions with the internet and some added bonuses like Ammunation even does home deliveries if you order online. Getting email instantly on the PDA is great from getting tips to who is selling what drug the cheapest to where to get the latest missions or where a street race is taking place. Rockstar easily did a AAA game here, and though I can't speak of the PSP GTA games, I think this is easily one of the better GTA games to out lately and would put it up there with GTA: SA. I wouldn't count this out by any means, this is going to be one of the top scoring handheld games this year and even though I haven't completed it yet, this is definitely in my top five favorite games right now.

@ xXZak-ataKXx You said "resistance is gonna be better than GTA for the DS"..ButI saying GTA:CW will sell more DS than Resistance can sell PSP'S ..The 2 games shouldn't be compared like that, Their brand, contents, stories and gameplay are different...GTA will offer more additive gameplay and don't forget its more Mature Theme....making the ds more popular amongst. adults

i trust rockstar and i believ GTA:CW is going to be good. At first i was cautious, but from reading the previews, i believe it will be something refreshing and new

dr_jashugan
dr_jashugan

@dzimm and @kejigoto I doubt GTA:CW will be better than GTA: Liberty City Stories or GTA: Vice City Stories for the PSP. I don't know why but GTA:CW reminds me of Micro Machines. :P

Templar_Bladema
Templar_Bladema

Considering GTA for the GBA ruined my thoughts of a portable GTA, and Vice City Stories brought back my respect for a good portable GTA, I might have to check into this one.

kejigoto
kejigoto

@ dr_jashugan Wow, you really haven't been paying attention, and having spent the last few days playing GTA: Chinatown Wars I can easily say its a great GTA game, in fact it feels more like a GTA game than GTA IV did. If you've been with the series from the get go like I have its a throw back to the first 3 that came out (GTA, GTA II, GTA London). It has you doing things I've wished had been in so many past GTA games and has a high level of detail I wasn't expecting. Take it from me, anyone doubting GTA:CW is just going to miss out, this is truly a great game and I'll be putting up my review of the game here shortly.
