Shippin' Out July 11-17: NCAA Football 11, Dragon Quest IX

Slow week at retail highlighted by EA Sports' annualized college football sim, first Dragon Quest game specifically made for DS, DeathSpank for Xbox Live Arcade/PlayStation Network.

Microsoft's Xbox 360-exclusive Crackdown 2 was the center of last week's light new release schedule, and this week doesn't see much more in the way of volume or significance. The most notable titles pinned for this week are EA Sports' collegiate gridiron game, the latest Dragon Quest installment, and the violent downloadable DeathSpank.

From EA's Tiburon office in Florida comes NCAA Football 11 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2. The latest installment in the long-running series hits Tuesday, July 13 and packs in a number of new features, including updated online Dynasty play, on-field referees, and gang tackles.

EA Sports isn't faking it, NCAA Football 11 hits this week.

The Nintendo DS plays host to the ninth installment in the Dragon Quest series this week. Level 5's Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies hits the popular portable this week, published by Nintendo of America. The role-playing game, the first main entry in the series to be specifically made for the DS, puts players in control of a fallen angel, recently turned ordinary human.

On the digital distribution front, Hothead Games' comically violent DeathSpank hits the PSN and XBLA this Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The game, developed under Monkey Island series creator Ron Gilbert, is part of the EA Partners program.

Also being released this week is Activision's Little League World Series: Double Play for the Wii and DS and Little League World Series Baseball 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The title arrives about a month before the actual Little League World Series takes place in Pennsylvania in late August.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later in the week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

I've waited for Dragon Quest IX for so long I think I've gone from anticipating it to just saying to myself that I might get to it eventually. I've not really been in the mood to play my portables these days. And if I did want to get something for my portables Persona 3 PSP will probably be my next buy.

NCAA Football 11 is what I will be getting as it's always pretty good game and is never the same. As Dylan417 claim which there wrong saying that it is the same. I'm excited for Madden NFL 11 next month as well.

I'm tired of games with plotlines about angels and demons. What is with this focus on portables? I would be more tempted to buy all of the rpgs on consoles even with the snes/psx graphics. Is the main reason companies are focusing on the handhelds because of the long development time and feeling that they need amazing graphics? At least release some higher resolution copies on xbl or psn and give it a shot.

Dragon Quest looks interesting. And my brother will get NCAA, so I don't really care about that one.

It is a pretty lame week, but if you look up DeathSpank I think anyone would have a hard time NOT liking it.

WOOHOO Dragon Quest. Been waiting for a while for a true RPG on the DS :D

The issue with Dragon Quest IX is the fact that multiplayer is local only. Considering how many RPGs are on the DS, I'm not sure that a game with a weaker single player element (thanks to the multiplayer focus) is for me. Had multiplayer been wifi the chances of me getting the game would have skyrocketed. I also don't think its going to sell that well in North America because of this.

Let me see what this dragon quest thing is all about. I hope I did not purchase it and it is bad. Hopefully it is real good.
