Shippin' Out Jan. 8-14: Amy, Zen Pinball 3D

Short new release slate led by Lexis Numerique's survival horror game on XBL and PSN; Zen Studios' latest hits 3DS, and Choplifter HD takes off.

Late last week, Warner Bros. delayed Gotham City Impostors from its scheduled January 10 debut, bumping the week's biggest release to February. That move leaves downloadable titles Amy, Zen Pinball 3D, and Choplifter HD as the main draws this week.

There's something about Amy…

Leading the group is the survival horror title Amy on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. The game is set after a comet crashes into the earth, releasing a disease that spreads to the populace. Players control a woman named Lara, working alongside an 8-year-old autistic girl named Amy to escape the horde of infected. Amy was developed by VectorCell Studios; it hits the PSN on January 10 for $13 and Xbox Live on January 11 for 800 MS points ($10).

Also out this week is Zen Pinball 3D for the 3DS. Available on January 12 for $7, the game includes four themed tables: Earth Defense, Shaman, Excalibur, and El Dorado. In addition to the expected added visual dimension, Zen Pinball 3D sports multiplayer functionality, online leaderboards, multiple viewpoints, and table-specific missions.

The last notable new release this week is Choplifter HD on Xbox Live and PSN. A revamp of Broderbund Software's original Choplifter franchise, Choplifter HD will see players assume the role of a pilot for the elite international helicopter rescue team C.H.O.P.R. (Coordinated Helicopter Operations, Preservation, and Rescue).

January 2012 is basically dead compared to January 2011. There were two major releases last Jan (Little Big Planet 2 and Dead Space 2) but at least they came out on different weeks. Plus you had the Playstation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 and some second tier releases like Kingdom Hearts Recoded, Mindjack, and others. Jan 2012 you have the first major retail releases both coming on the last day of the month and NFL Blitz as the only significant downloadable title. Well I guess February is when gamers can get busy again.

If I feel like it I'll try and get my hands on Amy it is probably the only thing that interest's me at and be cause the other things come out to other platforms that I do not have yet.

Zen Pinball is great, though you'd be best spending the same amount on Pushmo (or Pullblox if in Europe) as it is by far the best downloadable 3DS game right now.

CEO Jose Sanchis says that the incongruity in price between consoles can be blamed on foreign exchange rates and the amorphous nature of Microsoft's moon bucks
