Shippin' Out Jan. 17-23: Dark Void, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Capcom's jetpack-powered action game and Konami's spook-fest headline a light week on the retail front; Bejeweled Twist DS, Vandal Hearts 360 also on tap.

In October 2007, Capcom announced an all-new action franchise, Dark Void. A year and a half later, the company made the very bold prediction that the franchise would sell at least 2 million copies. Such a figure would put the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game among the Japanese publisher's other hit franchises of recent vintage, such as Lost Planet and Dead Rising.

Capcom hopes Dark Void will be its next breakout original IP.

The proof will be in the proverbial pudding this week, when the already-big-screen-bound Dark Void goes on sale in North America. It is the first project from developer Airtight Games, home to several former members of shuttered Crimson Skies developer FASA Studios. The third-person shooter will have players engage in three-dimensional combat powered by jetpacks, a gameplay formula that has earned it the nickname "The Rocketeer in Space." It sees humankind fighting The Watchers, an alien race banished by humanity to an alternate universe after its members grew too powerful a la the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica.

Those not fond of airborne sci-fi derring-do will have a chance to get their horror on with Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the PlayStation 2 and PSP. The M-rated adventure game sees players once again return to the titular haunted town, this time to track down the missing daughter of protagonist Harry Mason. The "reimagining" of the original Silent Hill was released for the Wii in December and scored solid reviews.

Rounding out the week are a passel of DS games, including the Dark Void spin-off Dark Void Zero, Bejeweled Twist, and Glory of Heracles, which was featured on a recent episode of Today on the Spot. PopCap's Bejeweled Twist will also puzzle Nintendo's handheld, which sold 11.2 million units last year in the US.

Did Vandal Hearts only come out on 360? When is the PS3 version coming out?

izmickey, it is not you, the game really sucks. The formula go like this. Capcom + Japan = Winner Capcom + Other mix = loser

Is it just me or did the Dark Void demo kinda suck. I found the music kind of annoying. Maybe the end product will be better.

Capcom just hasn't been the same since senior staff left along with the people from Clover Studios, I liked Dead Rising and Lost Planet and they should have stuck with those IPs instead of going on the this binge of risky IPs, like Bionic Commando and Dark Void, and as much as people were pumped for RE5 I feel it got schooled by Dead Space in terms of quality, and lately their only other ambition has been repitition, like bringing back PlayStation and GameCube titles to the Wii like they were fresh like Okami, RE4, and now the other RE games, and despite my actually liking the first Umbrella Chronicles they just decided to half ass Darkside Chronicles, though I do think the ex-Capcom staff that left did come back temporarily to work on Umbrella Chronicles and not the Darkside Chronicles explains the difference in quality between these titles, plus we're seeing they're releasing RE5 again as a Gold Edition, and SF IV begginning to get the same treatment of the half dozen SFII games like they don't understand how downloadable content works... Capcom better be taking themselves seriously from here on in or they're going to earn the nickname "Crapcom" and it's going to be a name that's going to stick.

I meant now that they're out are they as good as the hype or as bad as the demo? I'm thinking the demo would be more accurate. And how good is Dark Void Zero?

Dark voids demo put me off, the only games i'm buying this month are ME2 and MAG.

I recently played the demo of Dark Void and I don't know if I was the only one, but I had a real difficult time in flying the character around. Even if I changed the invert of the flight controls, it still remained a pain in the neck to stear him around. Half the time during the demo I was hitting mountains and crashing to the ground. I might pass this one up, or wait til it gets a little cheaper.

Awful game. Awful flight controls. Awful awful awful. Dark Sector on the other hand is very good. Especially with body vibration.

I really didn't like the Dark Void demo. Uninteresting lead character, irritating aerial combat...I'd rather play Dark Void Zero.

They're going to need one hell of an advertising budget to push two million sales on a mediocre game. I wouldn't put it past them though, it's been done before.

Dark Void looks to be getting some pretty horrible reviews, appears to be averaging around 60% right now, and looks like it'd be lower if it weren't for some anomalous reviews.

vandal hearts for the win!!!!! but why are people talking about it in this forum lol

At least dark void was somewhat original, unlike the crap Activision has been milking.I don't expect great sales and reviews though.

Didn't know Vandal hearts was already coming out. Hoping Heracles is good since its from Nintendo themselves.

Woo Hoooo! Death by Cube! I can't wait to try it! I wonder if Gamecubes will be a type of cube by which your death can come?

I predict Dark Void might do well commercially, but as a game it will be average at best. From what I have seen from the sneak-peaks, the air combat is uninspired and the enemy AI is subpar. Hopefully there will be other redeeming qualities that have not yet been shown to the public.

Games like Dark Void are always a sad tale. The developers try to give us something new in a genre and end up getting ripped worse than they should because of the fact they aren't amazing and don't fit the mold of the rest of the games in the genre. That said, I won't bother looking at it until it gets to be about $20 (even then I'll have to be in a gambling mood).

I downloaded the demo and it just wasn't that much fun, it remained me of an old arcade game ( I don't remember the name) but it wasn't so good the controls felt idk flying wasn't so good aiming was impossible and land gameplay was just average idk maybe it was just the demo that was boring, aiming while flying was hard even when locked on the target

Why is Dark Void Zero listed for Tuesday? I thought that as a DSi game it'd be a Monday release?

I can't believe Dark Void let me down. I tried to like it... the demo was OMFG horrible! It makes Army of Two look amazing, IMO. And I loved the first AOT . . . . however the 2nd not so much! But damn it Dark Void! And please.. don't bash Dark Sector... It was a solid game. well worth $8 at game stop right now, LOL!

Successful IP= Borderlands, thank you! I have my doubts about DV, to tell you the truth.

I am predicting Dark Void will be a solid failure. I haven't seen one solid post by anyone all over the gaming sites of anyone that is actually thinking of buying it. Who thought this game was a good idea anyway? Major financial hit for Capcom.

I'd probably play Dark Void Zero, but not Dark Void itself. The aerial combat is solid, but melee and ground combat are very jerky.

Is there any love out there for Vandal Hearts or am I alone on this one?

Dark Void will be good but I dont think its gonna sell 2 million. I mean not that much people liked the demo or even know about this game.

SnakeEyesX80

The fact the Dark Void has no MP to speak of (be it co-op or adversarial) really hurts the game in the long run. It also won't have the longevity of Crimson Skies as a result.

I don't even think that it is a competition.......I think that Mass Effect 2 will eat MAG. Now that will kind of depend on what type of gamer you are, but ME2 is going to be wicked. \ \ I really do not see how 256 people are going to play well together.......16 can't even play well in COD. Either way I have it pre-oredered and will be picking it up.........see you online b!t%hes on the 26th. \ \ I think that Dark Void's name is going to sum up its sales.

Dark Void is coming out this week? I thought it came out already. I saw it at the Fryz near me a couple days ago. Anyway I wasn't impress by the demo, so I am not going to get DV. I can't wait to get Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for my PSP through.:)

I had two games on my to buy list this month and they were Bayonetta and DV. After playing the demo for DV I bought Bayonetta and a PSN card to get Crash Bandicoot and FFVII. those are more than enough to fill the gap until Feb.

Things arent looking good for DARK VOID. The demo is drawing very negative remarks among gamers and the first review of this game got a 6/10. For me the killer software this month will be MASS EFFECT 2.

BigBacon87

Dark Void is going to crash and burn. With a game like this releasing a demo is just sealing the deal.

betelgeuse68

"Dark Void" will likely be rated mediocre by reviewers. I tried the demo and I wasn't impressed, I deleted it after about 15 minutes. The average rating for the demo under XBox Live is barely over 3 stars which is in line with what I was expecting the game to dial in as, i.e. mediocre. I'm always wary of a Capcom titles where they're simply the publisher and didn't have an in house team develop the title. The level of quality is very hit or miss otherwise - "Bionic Commando" anyone?

Oh. Thought this game was out already. ... ... Am I supposed to care about it?

@taylormadederek Mass Effect 2 seems better to me. I haven't heard anything about MAG really since E3 2009. Seems lower in profile than Mass Effect 2 and the two wii games coming out. Interesting how many people are saying that it's average at best, mediocre at worst because of the Demo. In my opinion, even if Dark Void was a decent game it still has the problem of much higher profile games coming out next week: Jan 26th is going to very big and many gamers are really going to skip on a so-so game like Dark Void. Also I agree that Dark Void is NOT going to sell 2 million copies. It just doesn't seem interesting enough to warrent that and it is releasing at a (rather unusual) busy time of the year.

RitterXplode

So now it's the Wii and the PSP who get the good games (SH) and PS3 and the box are left with... DV?

taylormadederek

I have Dark Void pre-ordered but I think that I will be changing that.......It looked like crap......then it looked amazing...and now it only looks OK, so that is a pass. \ \ Come on Mass Effect 2 and MAG.......two exclusives......I know which one I think is better........ \ \ Which do you think is better?
