Shippin' Out Jan. 10-16: Army of Two, Vancouver 2010

EA Montreal's mercenary duo returns in The 40th Day to lead light week at retail; Sega's Olympics sim descends on 360, PS3; Daniel X, Sands of Destruction storm DS.

by

Between Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno, and APB, Electronic Arts has a busy few months ahead of it. The publisher's jam-packed early-year release lineup begins this week with Army of Two: The 40th Day, a direct sequel to EA Montreal's co-op-heavy original released in March 2008. Available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP, The 40th Day picks back up with the mercenary duo Salem and Rios as they head to Shanghai, China, which is in the grips of a number of inexplicable catastrophes.

A sitcom in the making?

Though the 2010 Winter Olympics won't descend upon Vancouver until February, Sega will hit the slaloms a month early with Vancouver 2010 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Winter Games. Available for the Xbox 360 and PS3, Sega's Olympics sim offers 14 events from the world stage, including giant slalom, snowboard cross, downhill, and bobsleigh. The game also offers online or split-screen multiplayer, as well as leaderboards for individual events.

A handful of lower-profile titles also head to retail this week. THQ and Sega both have a pair of DS titles on tap, respectively releasing Daniel X: The Ultimate Power and Sands of Destruction. On the Wii, Xseed Games will release its aerial shooter Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, and Konami breaks into a sweat with its exercise sim Walk It Out.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

This should be twice as good as Army of one

Army of Two is no doubt going to be fun but I think it still will have many of the flaws of the original, my prediction is an 8.0.

@ShadowXStorm I didn't diss any games, just not looking forward to ME2 or any game in the month of January. You want to see people who diss games that haven't even released yet, go view the MAG forums. Games others might think are great might not be great to me. Take Bayonetta for instance I don't think its great due to all of the DMC and GoW series. Others think its great because they get to stare at a female all day long. Just like some people enjoyed the MAG beta and others didn't. I liked it because it required people to work as a team rather than go post up somewhere and get lots of points, granted it got repeitive it was still fun. I like Kotor but didn't like ME1 Kotor2 was kind of blah and DA:O fits into the blah catagory for me also. Like I said, some people enjoy certain types of games more than others.

Army of Two: 40th blah blah should be quite fun. Good review on IGN.

still got to hit up GameStop on the way to work to pre-order 40th Day, I hear it comes with exclusive pre-order content like early access to the Extraction (basically Horde mode) which others will have to wait another month to get access too jeez, first Bayonetta, now 40th Day, and Mass Effect 2 still coming; it's going to be a good month

I love of the people here who give thumbs down because you disagree with them.

So, in other words, nothing this week. I guess "Army of Two" might interest some people, but not me. I guess most of us are just waiting for "Mass Effect 2" now.

Yea Jan really has nothing worth getting. Yes I'm putting Mass Effect 2 in that section also. FEB-April ate the months I'm personally looking forward to.

IGN gave army of two the 40th day a 8.5 so it must be good

I really want to hear more about Sky Crawlers. It looks kind of cool, but I want to know if it's good enough or not for a purchase. Hopefully GS puts up a review sooner rather than later.

Sands of Destruction's the only on on there I'm interested in.

A new Sims 2 expansion pack? I thought they did Sims 3 stuff now? And how come the Wii and DS got their olympic games before the PS3 and XBOX 360? Three months earlier?

When the best release of the week is a Phoenix Wright port to the Wii Console, you can safely avoid the stores for a while. Mass Effect 2, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

There are too many games overall out there but it's more that there are too many of one type IMO. I mean, every company out makes a shooter. Halo, CoD, Gears, Killzone,...that's about all you need. Anything more is just a different flavor of Vanilla. Not to say the games may be bad, just not strong enough. There's always room for a couple of competitors but when you have 5 games of the same type releasing in the same moth, then of course somebody's gonna suffer. It used to be driving/racing games and fighting games but now it's clearly time for shooters to go away. Evolve or die.

Army of Two wasn't all that great and what does EA do - they hype up the sequel as if the first game was a masterpiece.

army of two is just one more game in a giant ocean of games i don't have time for. just another game that's a me too gears clone in a modern setting. seeing a game like that always reminds me of the fact that far too many games are published nowadays. publishers and developers could be alot smaller with less overheard if they didn't make as many games and didn't need as much staff.

I only played the demo for a short while but it just seems like the shooting mechanics are a little lackluster
