Shippin' Out Aug. 30-Sept. 5: Guitar Hero 5, Champions Online

Activision's latest rhythm game rocks out with Cryptic's new superhero MMOG, C&C Commander's Challenge, Section 8, two PSP fighters, and Gears 2 GOTY Edition.

Subtlety wasn't exactly what Activision was going for when it announced earlier this year that Guitar Hero 5 would be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii during the first week of September. After all, it's not like its archrival is releasing a competing rhythm game based on arguably the greatest rock band of all time a week later, or anything.

Hard to go wrong with a little Johnny Cash.

Guitar Hero 5 expands Activision's franchise with 85 new songs, letting gamers jam out using a plastic guitar, bass, drum kit, or microphone. The latest installment also lifts the restriction on the one-instrument, one-player rules that have defined the series. Activision has also introduced forward compatibility to the series, which lets gamers play along to tunes released in previous Guitar Hero games. Guitar Hero 5's full set list can be found here.

On the massively multiplayer online role-playing game front, Atari and Cryptic Studios will be launching Champions Online for the PC this week. A superhero-themed MMOG, Champions Online can trace its roots back to the now-canceled Marvel Universe Online. Like Cryptic's City of Heroes, Champions Online offers a wealth of customization options as gamers do battle against a range of ne'er-do-wells. An Xbox 360 edition is expected later this year.

Sci-fi gamers may also be interested in SouthPeak's Section 8, which will be available for the Xbox 360 and PC this week. With support for up to 32 players in its multiplayer mode, the game has been compared to Dynamix's seminal online shooter Tribes. Xbox 360 shooter fans can also check out Gears of War 2: Game of the Year Edition, which includes 19 multiplayer maps, the Road to Ruin add-on, and achievements worth an additional 750 gamerscore points.

The PSP is where it's at for fighter fans this week, as both Namco Bandai and Capcom have brawlers on tap. From Namco Bandai comes SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, which features 20 playable characters, as well as a fighter creator and multiple gameplay modes. Capcom's Fate/Unlimited Codes will be available only through the PSN and features 17 fighters, cel-shaded visuals, and a reworked battle system over previous installments in the franchise.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Yeah Mini Ninja's is mysteriously missing from this list. Early review are pretty good so far. Waiting to hear from Gamespot and IGN for their reviews.

@omarsh94 - Yup, thats what you get from a game that is still popular today with new DLC still coming out. Unlike PS3 exclusives that might be popular for a month and never heard of again.

Why isn't Mini Ninjas listed? GameStop contacted me to say I should be able to pick my copy up tomorrow.

@monson21502 if they put 200 new songs on an iteration of guitar hero, the licensing fees alone would prevent activision from selling the disc itself for under...i don't know...upwards of 120 dollars. which is roughly the same amount of money one gets for selling a kidney on the black market. ... and activision knows that if you want gamers to buy a game that's worth more than a kidney in columbia, it's going to take a lot more than a bunch of songs. night-vision goggles, at least.

guitar hero 5 already???? wow seems like guitar hero world tour just came out. why dont they take their time. add about 200 songs to each game. cut out the over priced dlc. that way people who spend 60- 100 bucks wont be looking for new songs to beat within a week.

I've asked numerous friends if they are gonna get Guitar Hero 5 and every single response has been the same.... "They're already coming out with Guitar Hero 5???" I doubt many people will buy the complete package but some who already own World Tour might buy the disk to get more songs... Other than that, I feel like this game is gonna fail.

I received a phone call August 27 Thursday night that SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny would be available for pick up on Friday August 28. I also received a nice art book with a music cd for free when I picked up my copy Friday afternoon.

First of all there was NO Guitar Hero 4. Secondly DO NOT buy that crap and support Activision. Section 8 has a lot of potential and the demo for multiplayer was quite good. I will pick that up for $40 before Christmas.

Goddammit has Wii's Muramasa been delayed to a later date or is Gamespot just getting stupider by the minute? If still on track for 9/3, then these for me... Muramasa Wii (pre-ordered) Guitar hero 5 PS3 (pre-ordered) Fate/Unlimited Codes PSP Might get Soul Calibur BD PSP if it turns out great and already have the Gears 2 All Fronts.

Im sorry, but does anyone else feel like it was just last week that we bought GH WT? Im saving mah money for RB Beatles, something new for a change.

@Ehggsz you know...you wouldn't be breaking any laws if you bought a game that got a poor review...reviews are, by their very nature, subjective. the person(s) that reviews the game for this or any sight probably doesn't have the exact same tastes as you. it sounds like you'd pass up a game based solely on a semi-arbitrary number. you might be shorting yourself some fantastic (albeit relatively pointless, big-picture-wise) videogame experiences. why would you do that to yourself, chandler, why...why?

Alright I give a slight edge to Rock Band, but to be completely fair,GH 5 is looking MUCH better than GH WT--I actually think sales will go even higher. and has anyone noticed Activision-Blizzard rules like half the game industry (I know,I'm exaggerating, but really),and it's not a bad thing,so many good games come out of them, but can someone say MONOPOLY? There should seriously be a Monopoly:ActiBlizz edition. I like the added "voice" to this article--->"it's not like its archrival is releasing a competing rhythm game based on arguably the greatest rock band of all time a week later, or anything. " and "The PSP is where it's at for fighter fans this week, as both Namco Bandai and Capcom have brawlers on tap." Even the On the Spot is getting better, keep it up Gamespot.

This week is a sign of good things to come, not excited for Guitar Hero 5 but next week theres The Beatles, the gaming season will officially start then

Only good thing coming out is possibly Champions online. Who needs the 76th GH game released this year, especially since most of the good tracks will likely find their way onto Rock Band eventually thanks to DLC (Some already have). I wouldn't take GH5 even if it came with GH Van Halen for free, oh wait it does, nice try Craptivision, a bit of a desperate move though, that and the release date of this game make it so obvious they are seriously crapping their pants over The Beatles Rock Band lol.

The Gears 2 GOTY edition is a great deal. I'll probably trade in my gears 2 and get that since I don't have the All Fronts yet.

"...greatest rock band of all time..." I don't really understand that. I honestly don't understand why everyone gets so worked up over The Beatles. Now, don't get me wrong, I like The Beatles. I'm not a superfan, but I have that number one's collection, and I like it; but when you've got Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, and other greats in GH5, versus The Beatles Rock Band, I would go with GH. But that's just me; to each his own, as the saying goes.

ooooooooh Guitar Hero 5! *remembers how much GHWT sucked and how much damage Activision has done this year* Oh yeah. NVM. Only other thing this week is SC PSP. It has ****ing KRATOS! That alone would be worth selling my SC4 copy for this IMO
