Shin Megami Tensei returns to PS2

Japanese action-RPG Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon arrives May 12, bundled with exclusive plush doll.

by

Fans of Shin Megami Tensei may not be finished with last month's release of Persona 4 and its 60-hour-plus quest, but they've already got another installment in the long-running franchise to look forward to. Atlus USA today announced that it will bring Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon to the PlayStation 2 in North America.

It's either a Raiho plushie or a vampire cop antenna ball.

Set for release on May 12, the game follows up on the original 2006 Devil Summoner, where the featured conflict was Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. This time out, Raidou will look to thwart King Abaddon's plans for a demon-infested Tokyo of the 1920s. Demons aren't all bad, though, as players will be able to negotiate with and win the assistance of more than 200 throughout the game, mixing and matching them to breed more powerful entities and commanding their actions in combat situations two at a time.

If those demon dealings aren't enough enticement, every launch copy of the game will be individually numbered and come bundled with a free plush doll of the game's Raiho character. The game-and-goodie combo will sell for $39.99 when it launches May 12.

I can tell who the winner of Longest Game Title 2009 is gonna be. Also, why are they still making these for the PS2? It's nearly a decade old. Everyone's moved on now.

This is decent news, but isn't it about time this franchise hit current gen hardware?

Fantastic news! Atlus clearly wants to get the most out of all the mainstream attention and decent sales they've been getting lately, and this is another smart localization choice which might attract more action RPG fans to the Megaten franchise. Now the only question is; will they also choose to translate the extremely promising tactical RPG "Megami Ibunroku: Devil Survivor" for the DS?

I'd really like to see SMT go multiplatform, or at least next-gen. It's nice to see developers getting the most out of the PS2, but it always makes me wonder how much more these excellent games can be.

Hell yes! More SMT is always good. And to the people saying "Next-gen plz," this has been out on the PS2 in Japan for a while iirc. They're just localizing it.

Atlus only translates it and distributes the game to US and EUR.

Good for Atlus, still supporting the PS2 so well, it only seems inevitable that a Persona 5 is coming.

I really liked the Persona 3 & 4, I haven't tried any of the other Atlus RPGs but I'm thinking now I should give them a shot.

While the first Devil Summoner was by far the weaker of the PS2 MegaTen games it was still a whole ton of fun. I can't wait to play this one!
