Shepard's Final Hurrah? Mass Effect 3 Extra-Special Spoilercast

Kevin, Tom, Chris, and Kurtis get into the nitty-gritty of Mass Effect 3.

Kevin VanOrd hosts a special Mass Effect 3 spoilercast, featuring the renegade crew of Kurtis Seid, Chris Watters, and Tom Mc Shea. What did everyone make of that ending? What about all the hours leading up to it? We talk about the laughs, the tears, and Miranda's curves, and wonder: what, exactly, do the Volus look like under their pressure suits?

When I chose Geth over Tali, my Tali didn't die. I was able to yell at the Admirals over the radio and they stopped attacking. In my game, quarians and geth started working together on rebuilding their world.

At around 13:30 of your podcast you talk about an uneasy peace between the Geth and the Quarians, however if you talk to Tali first after saving both races on Rannoch, Tali will tell you that Geth AI's are willingly integrating into Quarian suits and stimulating their immune systems by simulating viral/bacterial infections. Tali says this will allow the Quarians to live on Rannoch without suits within a few years vs. many decades. This sure seems to point to a lasting cooperation and paints a much more hopeful picture for potential long term peace between organic/synthetic. I'd go as far as to say that this shows synthesis is possible without the crazy galaxy destroying option presented in the ending.

I actually chose the keep the Geth and the Quarians! I had the best ending ever.

the explain those keepers in me1, they where the first race who got like indoctrinated/used by the reapers when they destroyed civilization, they saved some of the helpers to take care of the citadel and open the relay after 50k years

Chaotic-Mind
Chaotic-Mind

lol you can do both, save tali and get the geth with you. because at the end the quarians stand down and retreat so everybody is happy

@SovereignDream by warning her, from your terminal that they are coming for her

Maybe the asteroid in ME2 forced a uncontrolled explosion on the mass relay, ME3 it was a controlled explosion.

@anne_1230 Yeah, and if the series wasn't Mass Effect, which was built on the concept of "Your choices matter", that might've been okay. Flipping the script like that, while still proclaiming "Your choices matter", as they did, is nothing short of lying. Even if they don't change the ending, they certainly need to apologize for actively deceiving people like that.

I am probably very different...I think it's ok to have the game's message be "no matter what you did it didn't really matter in the end". It's probably just the game developers being lazy but I actually think that's a very deep and interesting message. I mean, it's quite a popular theme that has been discussed in many literature works, the whole idea of choice vs fate, cycles of life, the feeling that maybe in the end, the universe has to come to a certain ending in some way. I feel that was what I got and I am ok with it. I'm probably overthinking everything like I normaly do, ha.

I think Jeff from Giantbomb predicted something like this, though not to such a scale, if I recall correctly...I mean the fanrage over the endings

Huh. Spoilercast is kind of like the reviews out there. Don't bother really putting any meaningful focus on ME3's shortcomings and glossing right over them. What about the non-functional journal? Where's the criticism for the Tali face being a photoshopped stock photo? And in what possible universe could all reviewers have completely not expected people to be upset about a mailed in ending that makes no sense, introduces plotholes and retconns galore, and where your choices have zero impact?

I think the ending was pretty epic. In a real life situation i think there could be a different resolution, but whatever, it is just a video game. In my opinion they did the ending pretty well, I was worried they would make a lame ending or some kind of cliffhanger thing.

So you encourage synthetics to be free people as long as they don't do what every other organic race has done: rebel, that's really dumb. And if there is anything that holds true about the whole theory that organics and synthetics cannot co-habitate, it's that organics seem to always be in the wrong. Yeah I might find it unsettling if my toaster or my tools asked me if they could be considered equal, but I would try to eradicate them for thinking!!!

I don't know what I did different, but I kept the Geth alive to join my army and Tali lived. She did take her mask off, but just to breath the air of her home planet for a moment. I would have been pissed if she killed herself. Her attack drone helped me out in many-a-jam.

Is there any reason the download for this podcast should be 1,213 MB???? Perhaps once .MP3's are more mainstream you could switch to using that file format instead.

@SovereignDream You have to warn her about Kai Leng. I don't remember which dialog exactly, but it might be the one at the terminal in the Spectre office.

It is so refreshing to hear about someone talked about ME3 other than the ending, Don't get me wrong, I hate the ending and want it changed, but 99% of this game is awesome, and it is time we start to appreciate this game and its massive universe.

First Walkthrough: Synthesis. Redoing right now final mission with 6000+ Effective War Assets to achieve red ending "perfect". After that, i'll start 2nd Walkthrough with my renegade Shepard, called "Douchebag". And yes, Drunken Tali was awesome. Great show, guys.

Steadfast and true? You're describing Garrus as Silverbolt from Beast Wars. Also how could you hate Kaidan?! I love him which is why my female shepard has a romance with him! Great job Kevin and I hope the hotspot isn't canceled and where did you get the ending song for this?

@rumbalumba -- Thinning the organic herd. Some organics die so others can live. The argument the game poses is that, left unchecked, intelligent organic life will create synthetics that wipe out every living being in the galaxy. By killing only some species, other organics can thrive in their place. If the reapers didn't harvest, then there would be no one in the galaxy left except for synthetics.

I thought they were pretty thorough explaining the keepers in ME2 if you scanned them in ME1. Chorban sends you the email where he says that they are bio-engineered from the same material that Sovereign was made of, which happened millions of years ago. Chorban is also one of the first ones who points out that the Citadel was not made by Protheans. Keepers maintain the Citadel and turn on the mass relay inside the Citadel when they receive a signal from reapers after every 50 000 years. The VI on Ilos in ME1 explains that after reapers had gone back to Dark Space the remaining Protheans from Ilos travelled back to Citadel and turned off the ability for keepers to activate the mass relay onboard Citadel. I assume there are also keepers onboard mass relays, since those things need maintenance too.

@Kevin-V I believe it does matter, Kevin. When someone gives you something for free it's a different case, it's someone who shares his art with you, who gives you a taste of his imagination, and while you may or may not disagree with that, you take into account the man did not have to share with you his work, and you respect that. Mass Effect 3 was not made with the idea of sharing art. It was made with the goal most games nowadays have-- To earn a profit. You have a valid point when you say a creator does not entitle himself to give me a choice, and had it been a different game with a different premise, the ending might not be disturbing so much. But here's the thing-- Mass Effect had the premise of being a game with an open-ended story that will change based on your actions, making the whole game and it's concequences depend on your actions. And it held true to that, until the most critical moment of the game-- The ending. Bioware lied to us, Kevin. They lied and cheated. "The game has many endings. We wouldn't have it any other way". I'm sure you are familiar with that quote. Not only does the game have only 3 endings, but all 3 of them are roughly the same in a different color. So illogical and stupid ,does Bioware take me for a fool? They promoted the game to be something it is not. They lied to me, and i'm supposed to say "Thank you"? So yeah, it makes perfect sense to me. It's those dedicated fans that helped studios become what they are.

I loved hearing Legion's voice... "Shepard Commander!" ... I really missed having Legion as a selectable squad mate in ME3. I'd like to see a Legion spin-off game!

I don't like the ending regardless of any theories people come up with, weather their real or fake, but I think it's time to just wait for the dlc to be released and see what happens, for now i'm just tired of this and since until the dlc the game is not going to change i don't see why we need to keep discussing this.

@isahunt People are entitled to say what they want. IF they think halo 3 is better then it IS better.... to them.... if YOU think ME3 is better then it IS.... to YOU. Your being as much of a hypocrite as the people your complaining about.... you mad bro??

N yeah the concept of EDI with a body was the best shock i had so far..... n it was great feeling to make EDI getting accustomed to the human way. It was really great. Although i expected to run errands with miranda n Jack together n hoped if i could somehow bring the tension between them to a friendship, but it didnt happen so i felt kinda sad. But ME3 had some great great charms in it. They could have made it more massive with bigger plots but i think that would have taken them 2013 to release. But nonetheless i expected too much. So if you are a new guy to bioware stuffs... i think you r going to be blown away by the awesomeness! :)

if you dont have tali as your girlfriend, she falls in love with Garrus n i kinda found it very satisfying to see this more human side of my squadmates ........ it was very pleasing to see your buddies finiding happiness amidst all this. I kinda love Liara very much, n her this beautiful placid voice kinda had a soothing tone let you forget this war thing for the moment..... i kinda enjoyed her company but did not have her as my lover. Istead i choose ashley because she dresses very hot. I just love her very much. But since i loved Liara too, so i kinda felt guilty at the time when ashley was asking me to make out with her. Thats why i never did it. N then at the ending i got to kiss ashley atleast. And Liara shared a beautiful horizon vision with me where i hold her hand and we were walking towards a brighter end....... it was the best feeling. If only i could tell them I love them both n i kinda see them as one entity, I just dont judge one from the other

@Albaficas To me the problem with Shepard's survival is that it's NOT entirely dependent on your choice of ending. It's tied to your galactic readiness, which is nothing more than a hook for Bioware to tie multiplayer to the singleplayer campaign. So in the end your choice of ending is somewhat irrelevant to his survival, if your rating isn't high enough. EDI will show up no matter what if you encouraged her to romance Joker. So will Shepard's romance. So even if you take them with you to the last fight both EDI and your own romance(in my case Tali) shows up after the crash landing scene. Another instance of the game not taking your choices during the ending into the equation.

Albaficas
Albaficas

"Pro-Aktivity To me the indoctrination theory seems flawed. Maybe the reason that the Destruction choice is marked as renegade, is because you not only destroy the reapers but wipe out all synthetics(Geth, EDI and every organic whose life depends on synthetic implants" I choose destroy....shepard lives (he is half sythentic...P.Lazarus say hello) EDI was with joker last scene.... So nope still no sense at all.

Albaficas

phranman the majority hate the ending (why do you think bioware is looking to it and will announce something about it at pax???) If it was np they wouldnt do anything or mention anything at all. ending......WAY too many plot holes.... what happens to your crew ? how does your squadmate that are WITH YOU DURING harbinger rampage are in the normandy after few secs ??? when you shoot anderson how he doesnt bleed and instead when he die u can CLEARLY see shepard bleeding at the SAME SPOT where he shoot anderson ??? Why joker in few words say fck you shepard im out of here ??? He wouldnt NEVER leave shepard alone no matter what, the crew inside would stop him if he try to flee like a chicken. How can shepard survived a DIRECT beam from harbinger himself while u can clearly see a simple reaper destroyer eradicate asaris and krogans with one hit during the earth mission. As i said way too many plot holes...i hope bioware will explain things during PAX

Pro-Aktivity
Pro-Aktivity

To me the indoctrination theory seems flawed. Maybe the reason that the Destruction choice is marked as renegade, is because you not only destroy the reapers but wipe out all synthetics(Geth, EDI and every organic whose life depends on synthetic implants). It's basically a massive reset to the dark ages button, it doesn't solve the issue presented by space ghost. It merely delays it. I believe it was mentioned that TIM was not only researching way to control Reapers but also organics. Which would explained why your screen returns to normal after his death. Also what about the crash landing on the planet and the scene after the credits? Both of these happen no matter what choice you make, which would make the "it was all a dream " theory unlikely. You guys are giving Bioware way too much credit. What ever happened to badly written endings? Did we eliminate that possibility?
