Shaun White sells 3 million, sequel teased

Ubisoft tells investors to "expect more" installments in the hot-selling new snowboarding franchise.

by

Today, Ubisoft reported fiscal-year earnings that defied the pervasive gloom dominating the current economic landscape, saying that earnings during the period had risen 14 percent to €1.05 billion ($1.50 billion). A significant contributor to the company's strong performance was Shaun White Snowboarding, with Ubisoft explicitly calling out the Wii edition as putting on a "very strong showing."

Expect to see new snow on these slopes.

In a postearnings conference call with investors, Ubisoft offered more color on just how well the game performed, with CEO Yves Guillemot saying that the Shaun White franchise has now achieved sales of 3 million units. Given that strong performance, it came as no surprise when Guillemot then confirmed that Ubisoft intends to release new installments in the franchise.

"You can expect more Shaun White in the future," Guillemot plainly told investors. Unfortunately, the Ubisoft executive did not provide a time frame in which the next installment in the Shaun White franchise would surface. Currently, the publisher does not have it penciled in for release during its current fiscal year, which runs through March 31, 2010.

Though the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, DS, and PC editions of the game left critics cool on their launch in November, Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip for the Wii earned generally positive reviews.

Shame on me for getting this game at the CC closeout. It was so lame. It did replicate the real snowboarding experience, but as the game I wanted SSX Tricky style. So boring after 10 mins of playing. The best thing I did was sold it to gamestop.

This game sucks sooooooo bad. I got mine and was ready to take it back after wasting a half an hour on the lame controls. All the way to the store and home, visions of a next-gen SSX danced in my head... sigh... but it was not to be. Now they're telling me there's plans for a sequel? DAMN.

lol and I thought it was ridiculous that Tomb raider sold thousands of copies. I really do hope they don't screw up the next one and do that thing with target again. There are no good snowboarding games.

C'mon, look at the bright side. More funds for Ubisoft's game development.

It truly is a sad day when such a poor excuse for a game sells 3 million and warrants a sequel. I hope they spend more time smoothing out controls for the second game so it's actually playable without the balance board and especially on other systems. But I already know they won't.

I rented this game and its a fun game to just spend hours going down the hills, but I wouldn't spend $60 for it unless it came with free snowboarding lessons.

if they had a free play, my review would have gone from 6.5 to 8.0, but sadly, there is no free play! I mean c'mon. And I can understand why the wii is selling the most, duh! the balance board makes it seem as if ur snowboarding, yes they mentioned, but its obvious

Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, DS, and PC editions and Wii? is this 3 million a combined total of all these platforms? If so, I'm not too impressed, but a decent achievement nonetheless.

I really didn't like this game. The controls were overly complicated. (goes back to playing Amped 2)

Is one of the best uses for the balance board so I hope the sequel to use it too!

Yes, there was balance board support. But work irks me most about this game is that the TARGET version had a WHOLE other mountain! That's quite an extreme bonus.

Eno is so funny. Cost benefit analysis shows that its the most effective way to generate money at the least amount of cost next to DLC horse armour. You know why it is so effective? Its because people buy it. Do not blame companies for what people are willing to spend their money on. If you bought the wii version of this game your money was pry well worth it. If you bought any other version, well you just wasted your money.

@CoolGuyUsername If you look at the Wii reviews(go to metacritic.com) and check out how vastly different the Wii game is to the other versions you will see that it is one of the best snowboarding games ever. HD versions left out the great co-op,split screen..etc. that the Wii version had. Not to mention the balance board, which might as well have been made for a game like this. Plus, the Wii version actually looks cooler and fits the arcade style of the game much better then the sim look of the HD versions. Wii version has sold 1.2m of those 3 mill.

Shaun white Snowboarding...... 3 million..... how did it get 3 million, and yet the absolutly amazing Valkyria Chronicles is a commercial failure. nice way to show the game developers what kind of games us gamers want......

Well across 7 platforms 3 million really isn't great. I picked it up for $20, it's worth that almost.

I agree with da_illest101. Some people will in fact, buy anything. Keep in mind though, there really aren't that many snowboarding games aside from like SSX tricky and the 1080 games. I guess for people that really like snowboarding, which believe me, is a lot, this game was worth it. I personally didn't buy the game even though I snowboard, but I know a couple people that did. I feel bad for them.

enoslives7

The thing about these snow-boarding games is the game companies can just keep re-using the same old engine over and over. Then they add a few new bells and whistles.......and just like that, you have a totally rehashed game that has essentially been around for 10 years. Kinda like how EA just rehashes their sports games.

I think Ubisoft just found their 2K / EA sports yearly milking opportunity...
