Shaq and A-Rod Invest in This Esports Team
White Sox player Jimmy Rollins also made an investment in the organization behind League of Legends and Counter-Strike teams.
Sports stars Shaquille O'Neal and Alex Rodriguez have invested in an eSports team. TMZ Sports reports today that the pair, along with Chicago White Sox player Jimmy Rollins, have acquired a stake in NRG Esports. The eSports company owns League of Legends and Counter-Strike pro teams.
O'Neal, Rodriguez, and Rollins approached NRG, not the other way around, NRG chairman Andy Miller said. The specific monetary investment the trio made in NRG was not divulged.
TMZ reports that Rollins plays League of Legends. Additionally, O'Neal and Miller were already associated, as they are both co-owners of the NBA's Sacramento Kings.
They aren't the first traditional sports figures to invest in an eSports organization, as former Los Angeles Lakers player Rick Fox owns a team himself.
O'Neal acknowledged his investment with this funny tweet.
Pumped to join my new team @lolnrg and start tearing down turrets! Get ready for the Shaq attack! #leagueoflegends pic.twitter.com/cWtl8Zhua1
