Shadow Warrior Reboot is 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One

Another multiplatform game runs in higher resolution on PlayStation 4 than Xbox One, but both versions of this game run at 60fps.

The PlayStation 4 version of the upcoming Shadow Warrior reboot runs in 1080p, while the Xbox One iteration outputs in 900p, developer Flying Wild Hog has confirmed. Both versions, however, run at 60 fps, according to a new interview posted on GamingBolt.

"Shadow Warrior is a fast paced game, so it was very important to have 60 fps. Also we didn't want to cut any graphic features, so we decided to use 900p with 60fps," lead engineer programmer Krzysztof Narkowicz said about the Xbox One version. It was confirmed previously that the PS4 version of Shadow Warrior would run in 1080p/60fps.

As for the challenges developer Flying Wild Hog faced in getting the PS4 version of Shadow Warrior to run at 1080p, Narkowicz said, "Mainly CPU issues, as our engine didn't scale for more than 2-4 cores. This required a change of threading architecture and many parts of the engine needed a rewrite."

Shadow Warrior, which launched last year for PC, will be released across PS4 and Xbox One this summer.

It is the latest example of a multiplatform game outputting in a higher resolution on PS4 compared to Xbox One. Though the Xbox One is technically able to deliver games in 1080p/60fps, there is a long list of high-profile games that run in a higher resolution on PS4 than Xbox One, including Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs, among others.

1080p to 900p doesn't really matter you can't see the difference between the 2 with the naked eye.

I can totally see why Xboners resolution dosen't matter. Its like saying you happy with a Mini as you can only do 70 mph on UK roads, so why would you want a Ferrari :-)

As for your power PCs, they're like a track day car brilliant for the track. But the hard tires and suspension will kill your back. While I do have a decent gaming PC its mainly for games I need a mouse for.

sweet ive been waiting for this announcement

Great... although I'm still waiting for real AAA exclusives to REALLY get to know which one's best. Graphics matter, but story, entertainment and the whole game experience is way more important. Bottom line, these "resolution" news are just for fanboy discussion

While it's "technically" possible for Xbone to run games in 1080p, most developers don't feel like putting in the extra effort involved.

Wow finally another game being upscaled and forced at 60 fps on PS4, PC still stomps it though sorry.

Resolution does matter for ppl who enjoy crisp looking gameplay.  Seems like this will be another multiplat game getting purchased on my Ps4.

These people aren't playing on computer monitors people, they have 46-55" televisions 10 feet from their faces.  People need to face the facts that unless you sit right in front of your TV, there is NO difference between 900P and 1080P.  The best you can see at 10' from a 50" set is 720P...any more detail just gets washed away by your retina.

At 10' from a TV, you need a 70" set to make it worth your time, which is why 4K is a real joke. People need 75" sets minimum at that distance to make 4K worth it.   My TV is 55", and 15ft across my living room.  For Even 720P isn't fully clear at that distance so I play 10ft away or so on a dining chair so I can see better, but even still that is only about as good for 720P, 1080P is a waste.

"Now MCG, I play 6ft from my screen, what now?"

OK you got me, you only need a 42" screen at 6ft to see 1080P.  But once you get over 8ft with a 55" set it loses it's value.

On a computer screen looking at screen shots and videos we can discern small differences, but on our TV sets from our couches, on average, unless you have bigger TV's, or small up/close computer monitors, you won't know the difference form 900P and 1080P...and 900P is a lot closer to 1080P than 720P is, so the distance gap from the TV is even tighter to get that value.

PS don't get me started on "Native TV resolutions" either.  Take a look at your 1080P set and try to count pixels...you might be surprised to find less than 1080P's, or 1920 P's horizontally.  Why?  Ug I said don't get me started....but well they know you can't tell the difference from where you are sitting, but the dot pitch of the pixels on TV's is worse than your monitor or cell phone.  You can discern red, green and blue colors as separate pixels on the screen....well you have more than 1080P's  and 1920 P's if you count the RGB separately and it is cheaper than packing in more RGB's on a set....but from where you sit, they are counting on it blending together enough so you can perceive 1080P but they are actually giving you something less....something to think about too....Why 900P on a 1080P set upscaled doesn't look that much different when viewed on a TV set vs a computer monitor.

PC's get the best experience.

hurray for that obvious 1080p on ps4 -.-

The game was pretty good on PC.  I think it was a decent reboot, and had a pretty nice atmosphere about it.  I just wish that the devs who did this reboot (Flying Wild Hog) would do a Reboot of the 90s shooter BLOOD.

Yeah, I'm tired of the 1080p vs non-1080p articles every day (sometimes twice!) too.  Though I do like coming into these articles and reading all the comment wars.

Ahh, the glory of being a casual gamer.   I've got an Xbox One.  This game doesn't run in 1080p on my console.  Well, shucks.  K, over it.

Could we please skip these fucking stupid PC Resolutions for our HDTV's? i rather want 720p or 1080p not 768p or 900p and i want a Solid Framerate.

Heyyyyy look, a bunch of people whining about an insignificant number of pixels!

If the difference between 1080p and 900p makes the game more fun for you, you are seriously anal.

Couldn't care less on the whole frames being 30 or 60; or 1080p. Shadow Warrior is coming to home consoles.

Then it will come out and will be 900p on PS4 and 790p on Xbox One.  Oh well

Great troll bait headline Eddie.  lol

Really? There's 180p difference. 180p. That's **** all.

I think people are using this to jump on the XONE hating bandwagon. I bought a PS4 after I was concerned I wasn't getting the best overall experience but tbh I still play my XONE more. I prefer the controller and the GUI to the PS4. Plus its conveniently hooked up to my TV so I jump around the home page to watch TV, Netflix and Skype family without having to boot another console and grab another controller.

Why did the PS3 get none of this bad press when it was released as the more powerful, superior console yet failed to push out the same res/fps as the 360? What's changed?

Keep it simple - If you or your mum and dad purchased an XONE be happy that M$OFT will continue to pump money into this thing until it sh*ts gold. If you've got a PS4 then be content with the fact you have the most powerful console; but not by much (180p to be exact). Also, when it comes down to it, these consoles are last gen gaming (not enthusiast) PC's and not as big a leap in tech as the 360/PS3 was which lasted 10 years. Yet they and the games still cost way more!

Once Microsoft turns on them 300,000 cloud servers each box should be able to render in 4K right?

Wolfenstein New Order proved that multiplatform games can run at 1080p, 60fps on Xbox One. There's no excuse for this.

Yay! :D I didn't even know this was coming console-side. While we're at it, they should bring the Rise of the Triad remake over as well. Plus I would love it if Gearbox gave them the okay to do an updated Duke Nukem 3D.

There seems to be a double standard around graphics and resolution. When comparing the PS4 or XBO to PC, graphics don't matter.

When comparing the PS4 or XBO to the Wii U, graphics and resolution all of a sudden matter. The community as a whole likes to pick and choose their arguments...when its convenient.

@xrizz1066 let me do this comparision with cars also, x1 is more like a mercedez with all the bells and wisle and the ps4 is like a lotus with no radio and no power windows.

gunnmetal

@xrizz1066 dosent make sense this game could totally be 1080p but it dosent atter because theres no difference. plus you can totally not afford a ferrari if you bought the ps4 because it was 100$ cheaper

gunnmetal

@MuffintopX yeah this is just a port so they didnt feel like puttin gto much money into it (understandable kinda but also lazy) since the game was already released on pc 6 months ago.

@minecraftgreek You don't get it don't you....it's the PRINCIPAL FAK!!! These are next gen console we are talking not last gen, I expect from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft to get with the program that people have FULL HD 1080P display to built their hardware for the price we dish out to have their games running in full HD. For crying out loud a 600$ Pc can boost a 1080p display?!!!!

@Daveof89 @sabin1981

Oh but it does! Apparently over 633,600 pixels blah blah blah

It really impresses the ladies.

sabin1981
sabin1981

@Jimminyfixit Are you retarded? 900p isn't 1920x900, it's 1600x900. There's a great deal more pixels in 1920x1080 than 1600x900. You don't lose 180 pixels, you lose 633,600 pixels.

1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels on screen.

1600x900 = 1,440,000 pixels on screen.

"Not by much" Chortle. How's the difference looking now? =)

@UnrealPro its true plus wolfenstein if graphically more demanding than this old game its because its a port and they dont want to put too much effort in an already completed game.

Ha2e
Ha2e

@UnrealPro Theres endless differences in each game. For example, draw distance, how many enemies on screen, texture detail. character polygon count, etc. Just because one game runs at 1080p doesn't mean they all will. Each game takes up a different amount of resources. If a developer's vision is to have 10 enemies on screen and the One can't render that many at 1080p then its not going to happen.

tom2750
tom2750

@Assassin_O  yes because the PS4 is a cheaper console then the Xbox one obviously if the PS4 was more expensive there wouldn't be that much of a focus

gunnmetal

@xrizz1066 wolfenstein is 1080p plus it looks better on x1 so this old game is just lazyness of dev

Jimminyfixit
Jimminyfixit

@sabin1981 @Jimminyfixit Are you retarded?? You've completed missed the point of my comment and gone straight to throwing your toys out the pram on one thing. With all your "mines bigger" numbers the fact is if you look at the difference on the average living room TV size you won't notice the difference. Not that much difference to start a 6 month "resolutiongate" campaign against.

My main point is, in the grand scheme of things, it makes no difference. Plus, these consoles are no way near the next gen leaps we had last time. If I spent £400 on a mid range CPU and graphics card upgrade for my PC I would still be able to outperform these consoles graphically.

It's about the gaming experience, not the numbers.

lord_lad
lord_lad

@sirdan357 @UnrealPro correction...not all game engines are created equal. The Wolfenstein game is created using IdTech5....an engine that emphasize 60fps over anything else. Go to Digital Foundary and read their technical analysis. The Xbone version had many instance of 'pared down resolution' due to the engine's 'dynamic resolution scaling'..........

not that it's much of a deal if you just own the xbone...the game play just fine and adequate i'm sure. But if you own both platforms and if both version are at same price, i think to choose the better (if ever slightly) ps4 version is a no-brainer.

@tom2750 @Assassin_O everyone wants to be on the safe side ;) when MS announced xbox one, with kinect $500 and more tv than games. The choice was obvious for gamers

sabin1981
sabin1981

@Jimminyfixit Of course, of course! Because YOU have the Xbox, it makes no difference right? It's all about the "experience" right? But if it was someone else's machine you'd be all over the "numbers"

Whatever you say pally. Enjoy your substandard system.

@Jimminyfixit @sabin1981, You will notice a difference in pixels on larger screen sizes,as my tv for instance is a 84inch 4k tv (got it for cheap from a tech company that went bad) I noticed the difference when I compared the two consoles (ps4 and xbone)the drop in pixels really affected the picture quality on the xbone for instance it had less detail and blurred visuals(not that blurry but definitely noticeable compared to the ps4)

Jimminyfixit
Jimminyfixit

@sabin1981 @Jimminyfixit Are you retarded? From my first post I obviously have both consoles (and a gaming PC) so am not biased in the slightest, it makes no difference to me.
