Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter returns July 25

Precursor Games reveals re-launch date for crowdfunding campaign for Eternal Darkness spiritual successor.

The Kickstarter campaign for Shadow of the Eternals will re-launch on July 25, developer Precursor Games announced today. The game's original crowdfunding efforts--through Kickstarter and its own website--were shut down early last month citing "exciting new opportunities."

"Numerous suggestions about the first campaign were given to us by our community--and we listened," Precursor said on its website. "At this point we are not ready to talk about what has changed, but it is safe to say that it is a great deal. We look forward to discussing these changes more in the near future."

Late last month, Precursor Games developer Kenneth McCulloch, 42, was arrested on child pornography charges. The studio was quick to distance itself from the designer, with CEO Paul Caporicci saying that McCulloch is "no longer affiliated in any way" with the company.

Shadow of the Eternals is billed as a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, a 2002 GameCube title from Silicon Knights. The game is slated for a 2014 release on the PC and Wii in episodic form.

I hope this does come out. It looks great and it would be pretty awesome to have a good horror game on the Wii U.

The Gamecube had the best horror games of it's generation on the system. Hopefully the Wii U will do the same.

id rather re-buy a gamecube and play sanity's requiem

Bullshit then, bullshit now.  They shut down the Kickstarter because it was going to fail, so they lied about why they pulled it.

Now they're back, hand out again, begging for your cash.  These are the people who stole code from Epic and lied about it.  These are the people who made Too Human and then insulted anyone who pointed out how shitty it was.  The people who fleeced money from Activision to finance their Eternal Darkness 2 trailers while they were supposed to be making X-Men Destiny.

Thieves and trolls, hoping for one last scam - their target this time is you.  Will you fall for it?

It's Silicon Knights, so we can all fund the game on Kickstarter now and maybe the game will be ready for release in 2023 on Playstation 5, XboxPi (with mandatory HAL controller that controls you while you play), and WiiLOL.

"The game is slated for a 2014 release on the PC and Wii in episodic form."

They meant Wii U, right?

The new and improved, pedophile free kickstarter edition! Yeah, good luck with that floating around in your soup.

I'll think about pledging for a series of planned games when SK releases the other 2 games in the Too Human "Trilogy"....Oh, wait.

There's an IGN watermark on the frontpage image for this article. Not sure if anybody noticed that.

I originally pledged $200 for the game in the first attempt, but nearly a year into the Wii U's release and still not a single game worth owning for it, so I gave up and ended up selling the thing. RegrettablySotE is sadly no longer accessible to me, but it alone was not worth having an entire console for.

WTF is up with this episodic shit??? I'll wait till they release the full version of the game.

This is what changed: They hope everyone will forget everything around them trying the first time and make it successful this time.

Let's see what happens. I still will not have anything to do with this and I wont forget SK or Denis Dyack.

So they expect grandmas and young kids of the Wii U install base to fund them. lmao

If you're going to back this game, remember that the $1.5 million they are raising is only for episode 1 of 12. You might pledge enough to get all 12 episodes, but there is no guarantee 12 episodes will be made. The goal is to use the sales from ep 1 to fund ep 2, and the sales of ep 2 to fund ep 3, etc... It's unlikely they'll get all the way to 12, and if they do it will take years. Sales of later episodes never exceed sales of the previous one, they only fall or stay the same. That's because people never buy episode 2 if they missed ep 1.

If ep 1 doesn't sell well or it ends up sucking, your money is gone.

It's a big risk backing this game, especially with someone like Dyack's team behind it with their track record.

Even though they had an employee who prayed on the most vulnerable people in society. I forgive them, just this once.  Because this game is dream come true for me.   Eternal Darkness one of my favorite games.

When can we expect this one to close for yet newer exciting opportunities?

DarkSaber2k
DarkSaber2k

So there was an exciting new opportunity which has lead them all the way.......back to Kickstarter. Is this gonna be a running thing now? They go to kickstarter, nobody cares, so they pull the kickstarter and make more noise to attract attention before relaunching the kickstarter? This could get tedious fast. Oh wait, it already HAS got tedious.

What? Does this studio work out of International waters? You cannot fire someone for for being accused without evidence of a crime, particularly one that has no bearing on your job. And where he is still by definition innocent.

I will certainly not be backing anything these criminal a****** produce.

Didn't get funded last time. Won't get funded this time. They wanted 1.5 million to do one episode, with no promise of the remaining 11 being done.

No thanks. You guys fund it if you like. If the game turns out good, I'll just buy it. Less risky that way.

KumaTenshi29

Yeah, no, this is never going to happen. What exactly is to stop them from just cancelling these things again if it's not making much or anywhere near enough (like last time) and they just decide to wait, again, and start it up later. I mean, the thing is slated to come out next year, and it's not even fucking FUNDED yet. Their whole "development" of this thing just spells Doom to me, even if they get the money, I see delay after delay after delay happening.

JoonKimDMD

What's going on ?!?!?!?

They said they don't have money to make game and asked for money, and then they said they got money to start, and now they are saying ooops sorry, that was fake monopoly money~ my bad~ now let's start all over again, give me the money again????

Am I right???

JayQproductions

The kickstarter will raise less money than last time because Dyack is still involved and their writer/ game designer/ artist is facing child pornography charges. Time to close up shop and start a new company with a new name and without Dyack on the payroll, even as a consultant.

I'm kinda worried this new Kickstarter might do even worse than last time :o

I REALLY hope it does better.

I want this game to happen.

@ominous_prime Everyones excited about PS4 considering the big sony hacked fiasco, so Im gonna go ahead and say....I dont think that little bit of news that nobody cared about is gonna affect anything.

DarkReign2552
DarkReign2552

@lostn The goal is to get the funding to build the first episode, but you have to remember that the game needs to be built before anything can be released. This means licensing a physics engine, graphics engine, designing character models, recording sound effects, establishing gameplay basics, etc... So even if the funding is going to build just Episode 1, more than 95% of the overall game is being done in advance. The funding for the remaining 11 episodes will be limited to paying the developers to put the already-built pieces into their places and paying voice actors for the necessary dialog.

@Garm31 You forgive THEM? Don't be stupid. What do THEY have to do with what one of their co-workers does at home behind closed doors?

keech

@Garm31 I would look at the other games the people behind this have made and not let nostalgia for Eternal Darkness get in the way.  Dennis Dyack is responsible for making some of the worst games this console generation, then blaming Epic for how terrible they were and attempted to sue them for it.  Which ultimately ruined his company.

@Warful Probably about 0.01 seconds before the next one ends in failure.

@DarkSaber2k What's your problem? Does it really have that much of a negative effect on your life that this project has been given a second chance?

Thanatos2k

@wisnoskij They're already criminals though.  They stole code from Epic and lied about it.

The courts ordered them to destroy every copy of Too Human and all their codebase.  It put them out of business.

@JayQproductions" Time to close up shop and start a new company with a new name" AGAIN. They already did that to avoid paying all Silicon Knights lawsuit debt.

@amaneuvering Aye, it feels like it will be an uphill slog now.  Chris Taylor and Gas Powered Games had a hard time once news of their financial difficulties came out.  I wonder how the child pornography allegations from one of their staff will affect consumer confidence in Precusor's second kickstarter.

I too would really like to see them succeed.

lostn

@DarkReign2552 @lostn That's true. Most of the framework will have been done. But they still have to design new levels, characters, scripts, and a lot of playtesting. I'm not sure ep 1 will raise them that much money because they'll be giving free copies to backers, so it's the non backers who have to pay for the rest.

It seems like a pretty expensive looking game. I'm not sure $1.5m is enough to cover it.

Ophenix1
Ophenix1

@joshhi @Garm31 That isn't what he said. He said look at the other games they made... "Too Human" and "X-Men: Destiny". Both were horrible.

Even if you put all of the pedophilia accusations and the Epic lawsuit aside there is little to justify giving money to people who make bad games.

Ophenix1

@joshhi @DarkSaber2k Yes. I couldn't get up with morning knowing they will be launching a new KS in 2 weeks. These horrible horrible people...

@Chico86_basic @KumaTenshi29 Or they could you know.. go to Nintendo and ask them to publish it? Nintendo has more than 1.5 million lying around somewhere, and they even own the ED license if Dyack wants to make it an official sequel.

KumaTenshi29

@DarkSaber2k Exactly, that was precisely my point in the first place, this guy will just keep stringing any backers along again and again, like he already has been.

lostn
lostn

@DarkSaber2k @lostn @Chico86_basic @KumaTenshi29 Well he's gotta learn to compromise. You can't expect someone funding your game to not ask questions, and check on you to make sure their investment is in good hands.

If he wants money, he'll have to please the guys funding him. Is he expecting his KS backers to not ask questions, and if he doesn't end up delivering the game they funded, just take it like it's no big deal?
