Shadow of the Colossus Movie Gets a Director

Mama director Andres Muschietti tapped for upcoming movie based on the 2005 PlayStation 2 game.

The upcoming movie based on 2005 PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus is moving forward today, as a director for the film has been named. The Hollywood Reporter says Spanish director Andres (Andy) Muschietti, known for the 2013 horror flick Mama, is taking the reins.

The Shadow of the Colossus movie has been in the works since 2009, and at one point, Chronicle director Josh Trank was tapped to sit in the director's chair. The movie is being penned by Hanna writer Seth Lochhead, but there is no word yet on a cast or a release date.

Plot details for the Shadow of the Colossus movie have not been disclosed. But if it follows the game's story, you can expect it to follow a young warrior who brings his fallen love to a faraway temple in hopes of restoring her to health. According to a mysterious presence that dwells within the temple's walls, the only way to save this girl is to hunt down and destroy the 16 massive beasts that roam the surrounding lands.

Shadow of the Colossus was developed by Japanese studio Team Ico, which is now working on The Last Guardian (insert comment about game's protracted development here).

The Shadow of the Colossus movie is one of many video game movies currently in development. Sony is also making a Last of Us movie, while Ubisoft has a total of six films in the pipeline, including movies based on Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. In addition, Konami is moving forward on a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Blizzard Entertainment has its Warcraft movie, and an Angry Birds film is scheduled for 2016. And just recently, the Dead Rising movie got a director, and the next Resident Evil movie was delayed because lead actress Milla Jovovich is having a baby.

SotC is a great game. Hopefully it will be a great movie.

They should just spend the money and get Darren Aronofsky.  He's great at creating characters (not to mention amazing atmosphere), and he could make both the main character and however many of the Colossus are in the movie could each have their own subtle personality differences, which he could probably do rather well.

Offtopic: I still want a Command&Conquer movie/series. A quality one.

SOTC is effective as a game, it won't be as effective as a movie. Just because the scale of the game is of Hollywood proportions, it doesn't mean that every single element suits Hollywood.

I'm glad they decided to do the movie. I game is great, but never become a masterpiece due to the lack of narrative. There're too many unanswered questions after the completion of the game. It was such a shame, indeed.

They should have got Guillermo Del Toro to direct this.

I can already see it now

a sexy male hero all sweaty and muscled half naked with broken armor and SH!T and a hot random chick with perky boobs tells him:

"you must save us all or the gods need you or its your destiny" or whatever

then a huge monster destroys village ... people crying  hero watches with dramatic look

then some action stuff ....

then that guy that talks about new movies

SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS ...Dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Shadow of the Colossus does have a plot underneath its spacious world, but some of the characters ( including the 'Wanderer') do not speak. Thus there would be minimal dialogue if they did make a movie unless they take "artistic liberties" with it.

I would prefer an animated SOTC by studio ghibli.

So hour and a half of a dude on horse back and 30 minutes of a dude killing a giant, well its better then another comic book movie reboot.

That Adam Sandler and don cheedale sp? movie about shadow of the colussus was very good to. When my girlfriend, after we watched the movie in the theater, ask me why he was obsessed with just that one video game and wasted his time playing it. I explained the plot of SotC to her and how the main character battled monsters to try and bring his wife back to life, she was stunned and just started crying. She said, "And his best friend, (don cheadle) was playing the game trying to help him"  I said, "i guess, but he could just have been playing it because it was a damn good game"

I will try not to get my hopes up to high with this movie.

The MC will either have a wacky companion, or the horse will talk.

Pacific Rimmed and Transboners =P I mean Pacific Rim and Transformers shows the giant thing can work but I don't see how the game can work in full length feature film.  I gotta admit I don't like it.  Hopefully I am proven wrong buuuut.........

Yes! an argentinian (one of my fellow comrades) is directing the game that I love... The game where I've put thousends of hours, made Argo my b*tch with the explosives arrow, climbed the top of the tower and killed the 16 colossus countless times... Oh joy!

Please make it for Vita too. Shadow of the Colossus  on the go!

Are they going to have talking?  I really don't see how this can be a full length movie...half the charm of this game was in figuring out how to progress to the next boss, or where a weak-spot is...that stuff doesn't really translate well.  After 10 minutes of movie, it would start to feel like watching an HD lets-play video.

This would be 1 game that would be interesting for the Oculus however.

Muschietti is not spanish, he is argentinian.

I'm gonna need to buy this game again. This game when it first came out amazed me. The art direction was stunning, the combat was great, and the fights were epic. One of the greatest games of all time in my opinion.

Demonslayer017

No...  I really don't want this to be a movie.  I don't see it working well at all, and SotC meant so much for the games-as-art movement that I'm not sure what turning it into a movie is going to say.

I loved this game so much. So ahead of it's time. Just beautiful. Was it really 2005? Wow, where did that 9 years go...

Just once I'd like to come across a piece of news like this and see something like

"Upcoming Video Game Movie Has Found New Director....STEVEN SPIELBERG!!" (but that guy apparently hates video games and thinks they're not art....what a dbag)

But Nope, it's a director from some no-name horror movie that's probably crap.  Unless someone who has seen it is willing to refute me.

There's a lot of interpretations and creative space in a SotC movie. And an equal amount of opportunities to turn it into absolute garbage.

BrunoBRS
BrunoBRS

you know, SotC is my favorite game of all time, but i just can't fathom how it would work as a movie. it's like if the LotR movies had minimalistic dialogue and 90% of the screen time was just the wide shots of people running places.

Shadow of the Colossus with have a trilogy of movies before The Last Guardian comes out. Then the Last Guardian will have a movie before Half Life 3 comes out. Also the sun will expand and consume Earth before Half Life 3 comes out.

tom_cat_01
tom_cat_01

This is still a thing?

You know they're gonna ruin it by...

attempting to over-explain the minimalist narrative,

and

introducing too may new characters just so there can be some actual dialogue.

Urgh.

This could either be really good or really bad. I don't foresee anything else happening. Let's see how this turns out.

It would be awesome if they used the same story telling methods that the game used, that's what makes it so special, but it would be pretty hard to translate that into a movie. You will need a very talented Director to pull that off.

@Fursnake del Toro (my favorite modern director, btw) worked with Muschietti on "Mama", so I could see him doing so again.  He'd definitely do a good job designing Colossi.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@exedeath nah, it will probably be played by justin timberlak and he will have a bar scene fight with a motor-cycle gang in the first ten mins of the movie to show how tough he is. And the horse will be a ford escape - product placement baby!

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@gargungulunk I agree with you - make the film with no talking in it by any of the characters - save for Morgan Freeman as the 'voice' instructing the main character.

@foodrules The only thing that could have made it better would have been some creatures between bosses. I understand that the world was not covered with monsters (like Hyrule) but something to kill while I rode across the huge land would have helped.

@Chr0noid I aggree with you on some point but the movie Mama was good. So there's hope...

blueboxdoctor

@tom_cat_01 While I do think it probably won't turn out to be a good movie for various reasons, they could add more characters and have it be like Demon's Souls/Dark Souls where there are other characters but they maintain the bleakness/atmosphere of the game world and still give the player a feeling of isolation.

Barighm

@404FredNotFound I was just going to say, unlike the other movies mentioned, Colossus doesn't have nearly as much narrative to work with.

@lovely_dime Haven't you heard? Sony is in financial trouble. They're selling off franchises left and right.

jenovaschilld

@deadpen @foodrules Dude there were like snakes, and lizards, and assorted fruit trees, to battle.

But I think if they could show how beautiful and ancient the lands were, how the monsters were more part of nature and how the shadows corroded the hero with each kill-- bah, who we kidding, they are just going to put in a dozen random generic soldiers and watch how easy it is for the colossus to crush them.

ngboy
ngboy

@deadpen @foodrules i completely disagree. having every thing you fought to be a towering giant over you really got across how small and seemingly insignificant you were to the world. until you proved them wrong. by littering the land with easy to kill smaller creatures would shatter that illusion. that's what gave it it's sense of wonderment.  like an ant walking among humans and eventually taking them down.

lovely_dime

@Barighm

Or maybe their games are so well written many want to make movies out of them
