Xbox 360 owners were recently able to rediscover an arcade classic, innovative game, Gauntlet, via the Xbox 360 Live Arcade. The downloadable game returns the four-player game in all of its glory, with the addition of online play. Also today, Midway released Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play for the PSP, which includes a handheld version of the game.

Retro doesn't work with all gamers though, and for those looking to get with the times but hold on to Gauntlet's classic ideals of gameplay, Midway today announced that Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows has shipped to stores for the Xbox and PlayStation 2.

The four heroes of the coin-op classic--valkyrie, warrior, elf, and wizard--return for more hack-and-slash action but will also have new abilities. Each combatant can swap out weapons, will level up via traditional role-playing elements, and will be caught up in an intricate storyline that's vital to the gameplay. Four-player cooperative online play has also been included.

The game's development was about as difficult as slicing through horde after horde of foes. Midway dropped some dough to bring on id Software cofounder John Romero and ex-Black Isle Studios designer J.E. Sawyer to helm the project out of the company's San Diego studios. The pair left the game within a week of each other, for unknown reasons.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is rated T for Teen and sells for $49.99. For more information on the game, take a look at GameSpot's hands-on preview, or check back later today for a full review.
