While the Xbox 360 plays host to some of the biggest first-person shooters of this generation, its catalog of Live Arcade downloadable titles is doing an admirable job covering those of the past. XBLA already offers Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Duke Nukem 3D, with Perfect Dark on the way later this year.

Serious Sam was never shy about throwing hordes of enemies at the player.

Yet another vintage FPS was confirmed for the service today, as Majesco Entertainment announced it is working on Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD. The game is being made in cooperation with original developer Croteam and Austin, Texas-based production and publishing company Devolver Digital.

As the name suggests, The First Encounter HD will give the game a high-definition makeover with a new version of Croteam's CroTech engine. Majesco has confirmed that the XBLA edition will include four-player online co-op play but did not address other noteworthy features of the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter, like competitive multiplayer or level-editing tools. Representatives of the publisher had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD is set for a summer release and will sell for 1,200 Microsoft points ($15).
