Serious Sam 3: BFE arrives October 18 for $40

PC prequel to Croteam's run-and-gun first-person shooter series dated; premium version and preorder incentives detailed.

Croteam and Devolver Digital aren't kidding around with Serious Sam 3: BFE's release date any more. After months of a vague (and ultimately inaccurate) "summer" release window, the developers got serious today, nailing down an October 18 release date for the PC version of their new first-person shooter. No updated release information was provided for the console versions of the game.

Bomb-handed kamikaze soldiers will be free to frolic on PCs in October.

The companies also offered details on new preorder incentives for the game. Those who preorder through Steam will receive a Devolver CFO Fork Parker multiplayer skin and a 10 percent discount on the game to start with, plus an additional 10 percent off if they already own a previous Serious Sam game through the service. A Serious Deluxe edition is also available for $50. The extra $10 in that case will pay for a digital art book; new multiplayer skins; a scope for the game's Devastator weapon; and downloadable versions of the original two Serious Sam games, The First Encounter and The Second Encounter.

A prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter, BFE takes place in 22nd-century Egypt amid a collapsing civilization beset by unearthly beasts. The game sees the return of the series' signature adversaries like the Headless Kamikaze and Gnaar, as well as new opponents going by names like Scrapjack and Khnum.

Serious Sam 3's gameplay also features a number of additions, with Sam in particular getting an assortment of new melee moves. Additionally, up to 16 players at a time are able to play through the game's cooperative campaign mode.

Say good bye to Duke Nukem and say hello to Serious Sam.

Kind of funny that the third iteration of some games turn out to be prequels. MGS3, Deus Ex 3, now Serious Sam 3

@Gelugon_baat Serious Sam 2 wasn't even a bad game. It was the poor effects the game had and lack of feel in the guns and the cartoonyness that turned most people off. If you cranked the difficulty up to Serious and focused on the action it became a fast action fps puzzle game where every fight was a different puzzle that actually required you to think about which weapons you use, where to circle strafe and so on. Plus it was long as hell and the quality of the levels didn't decrease throughout the game.

I'm really glad to see croteam came back to the original formula. I can't say I enjoyed SS2. This will be a buy for sure.
