Sega SuperStars E3 2004 Hands-On Impressions

Sega's first EyeToy offering is on display at its E3 booth, and we tried it out.

Maybe we can't exactly say we went hands-on with Sega's new EyeToy game, Sega SuperStars, at the company's E3 display today, but we did play the game. The final version of SuperStars will feature a total of 12 games based on classic Sega franchises like Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5, Nights, and Chu Chu Rocket. We got to try out two of the games from the impending release, one based on House of the Dead and one based on Sonic the Hedgehog.

In the HOTD game, you'll view yourself standing in the middle of the screen as in EyeToy: Play, and you'll have to whack zombies as they appear in various places on the screen. A girl in distress will occasionally pop out too, and if you mistakenly hit her she'll approach the screen and slap you, which will knock off some of your life bar. Some of the zombies were stronger than usual and took three hits to kill, but we deftly waved our arms against evil (ahem) and dispatched them all in the allotted time.

The Sonic game in SuperStars had the speedy blue one racing through a 3D tunnel lined with rings, mines, and the occasional chaos emerald. By default, Sonic would run along the bottom of the screen, and to make him move around you had to wave your hand--and continue waving it--in the approximate area you wanted him to run. The goal here, obviously, was to collect as many of the rings as you could, not to mention all six of the chaos emeralds. Sonic was running devilishly fast, of course, so this task was really harder than it sounds.

The games we tried in Sega SuperStars weren't incredibly complicated, but they were pretty fun. It's safe to assume then, that the other games in the final package will be of a similar ilk. We're curious to see how some of the other Sega franchises translate to the EyeToy format, and we'll bring you more information on the game when we find out.
