Sega Masters Its Domains

In an effort to protect its intellectual rights, Sega of America goes shopping for URLs.

Nowadays, it's harder than ever to find a domain name that isn't already being used by someone else. Sometimes people even purchase domain names just so they can "sell them" back to companies who would probably want to use them to promote a product/service.

When the Internet began gaining popularity and more and more people created their own fan sites, video game companies like Sony and Nintendo cracked down, with many webmasters of fan-built Nintendo and Sony web sites having to hand over their domain names to those companies who owned the trademarks on "Nintendo 64," "N64," "PS," "PlayStation," etc.

Sega of America has taken a preemptive strike against would-be fan sites or domain-name buyers by buying up 150 different domain names, everything from "segaisdead.com" to "kicknintendosbutt.com" (and one for Sony too) and everything in between related to Dreamcast, including "dreamcastupdate.com" and "dreamcastzone.com." Even misspellings of the word Dreamcast are accounted for.

If you want to see the whole list, you can check out the Sega search on InterNic by clicking the link at the right.
