Sega competing in London Olympics 2012

Publisher bringing licensed international sporting game featuring 30-plus events to 360, PS3 next year.

Mario and Sonic won't be the only team Sega will be fielding for the 2012 Olympic Games. With its Nintendo collaboration headed to the Wii and 3DS, Sega announced plans today to commemorate next year's international sporting event with London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games. The game is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012.

London's calling next year. Sega will be ready.

Sega holds exclusive rights to publish games based on the Olympic Games, and this year's installment will see gamers transported to a virtual London to compete in more than 30 events. The publisher provided no additional details on which events gamers can expect. However, Sega did say that this year's installment will include more variety, as well as online leaderboards.

Whereas British studio Eurocom handled development duties on Vancouver 2010, Sega has tapped Sega Studios Australia (formerly The Creative Assembly Australia) for London 2012. In particular, the publisher touted Sega Australia's motion-capture facility.

The actual 2012 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in London from July 27 to August 12. For Sega's Vancouver 2010, the publisher launched the game a full month before the official games began.

Wow, I like sega, but they've sold out to jump on the olympic bandwagon. The games will be rubbish, the ideals of the olympics have long since drowned under the weight of corporate greed. I wonder how sega will represent that in their game ;)

I'm glad to see that SEGA are making it, though the scenery in the games might be interesting if the builders don't hurry up and finish the stadiums. We might be having virtual atheletes jumping onto pits of builders sand and spectators crushed by falling support beams. That might actually make the game more entertaining... I have confidence that sega will make an awesome game though, after all when they were forced to fill the sports gap left by EA's lack of support for the dreamcast, their games frankly pissed all over the EA equivalents

@servb0ts Seemed to be a nice game (though i don't have a ps3) despite of harsh reviews, but where are the nintendo characters? Who appear? There are other guests like Sonic or something?

Well, i won't lie, i like sega. Therefore i'll be waiting for this game to come out, wishing awesomeness. @scavenga I agree with you in all but one thing. Kinect Sports is a good multi-sports game for current gen. I know 'cuz i play it everyday. And i heard Sports Champions for ps3 is very good too, though i haven't had the pleasure to try it yet. Thing is, both are motion controlled.

A good multi-sports events game can be a lot of fun, but the last few years' installlments have been dire. Can't remember a single good game for the current gen consoles. I hope Sega comes through with this one!

Oh, the related game is "London 2012." I think it's going to be the official game of the olympics, like with realistic characters (probably actual olympics entrants)

hannifyPosted Jun 1, 2011 12:57 am GMT Shame that they will obviously never be allowed to put Nintendo characters on Xbox or PS3. ^^PS3 exclusive Hyperdimenion Neptunia look it up. has PS3, 360, & Wii characters in this game.

I was expecting a story about Sega dressing Usain Bolt up as Sonic and making him run the 100M...

Can Sega produce an Adventure game with Mario and Sonic characters? That would be epic. :D

You know, you could port Mario & Sonic to the 360/PS3. You'd have to delete Mario and friends, obviously, but you could add other Sonic characters in their place. Just a thought.

"Sega holds exclusive rights to publish games based on the Olympic Games" I did not know that! How long has that been? I swear I have played many Olympic based video games over the years that weren't Sega. Maybe I am mistaken. Maybe the author meant it's only for this upcoming olympics.
