Secret Drivers for CART Appear on the Web
Longstanding rumors indicating that there was a Glide driver for CART Precision Racing have proven true. And now someone has released the patch.
GameSpot News had been previously informed that one of Microsoft's popular titles, CART Precision Racing, could easily be Glide enabled through a small file named triglide.dll. All owners of CART have to do is to drop the file into the CART folder on their hard drive to enable Glide (you must also have 3Dfx's Glide Runtime drivers installed).
Now, apparently, someone has not only found the file (which enables OpenGL capabilities for the Microsoft title), but has gone ahead and posted it on the Web.
CART Precision Racing owners whose systems boast a 3Dfx-based accelerator can now download this patch if they choose. The patch substantially enhances speed performance on frame rates.
Word on the web is that Terminal Reality, the developers of CART, built the title with Glide capabilities but Microsoft decided not to use them. Microsoft has long encouraged game developers to support its own 3D standard, Direct3D. Apparently, the Glide driver can boost frame rates and overall performance by almost 70 percent.
GameSpot News contacted Terminal Reality who had no comment on the Glide function of the file. And calls to the Microsoft team responsible for CART had not been returned by press time.
