Sausage Party, the raunchy comedy from the minds of Superbad writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, opened in theaters this past weekend in the No. 2 position behind Suicide Squad. It cooked up $33.6 million in the US, which breaks a Disney animated movie record, it's now been confirmed.

According to Deadline, Sausage Party's $33.6 million opening is good for the biggest-ever US launch for an animated movie in August. Sausage Party shattered the previous record-holder, Disney's Planes, which pulled in $22.2 million for its opening weekend in August 2013.

Sony marketing and distribution chief Josh Greenstein said Sausage Party's success "shows that by taking risks with smart original concepts in the marketplace, it can pay off big-time."

According to the report, almost 50 percent of Sony's Sausage Party marketing budget was used on digital platforms, representing the highest percentage ever for Sony, following The Shallows.

"What does that mean? Essentially digital marketing spends are significantly lower than traditional broadcast, and it emphasizes that Sony got the biggest bang for its marketing buck," Deadline reported.

Sausage Party tells the story of the horror of what happens when grocery store items are taken home. Rogen voices main character Frank, a sausage, while the movie features a long list of other people such as James Franco, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson, and Salma Hayek.
