Electronics-maker Samsung has signed up for another year as a sponsor of the World Cyber Games, which has hosted a worldwide game tournament each year since 2001. International Cyber Maketing Inc., the Korea-based company that organizes the games, expects about 700 players to attend the championship in Italy, and it will dole out about $76,000 in prizes.

Samsung has sponsored the games since their inception in 2001. The company even "donated" the former head of its Audio/Video Business Marketing Group last month to the World Cyber Games, when Hyoung-Seok Kim became International Cyber Marketing's new CEO.

The preliminary US games began in Hollywood and will wrap up in New York on August 13. This year's final US venue for the World Cyber Games has yet to be announced, but the worldwide final match will take place in October in Monza, Italy.

This year's tournaments feature two Xbox 360 games, Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 3, and six on the PC--Counter-Strike, FIFA 06, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Starcraft: Brood War, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Winter Assault.
