Saints Row IV launching August 20

Teaser trailer for open-world action game reveals midsummer release date for current-generation consoles and PC.

A teaser trailer for the already-confirmed Saints Row IV today reveals the open-world action game will launch in North America August 20 for current-generation consoles and PC. A launch for the rest of the world is slated for August 23.

In development at Volition Inc., Saints Row IV will be published by new franchise owner Deep Silver, which acquired the developer and the series for $22.3 million during the THQ bankruptcy auction in January.

Saints Row IV continues the story of the Third Street Saints, but with a twist. This time, the head of the Saints has been elected president of the United States and must fend off a "catastrophic alien invasion." The aliens have transported the Saints into a "bizarro-Steelport simulation," and players must make use of various superpowers to fight to free humanity from the invaders.

"Escape the simulation that's trapped the Saints crew, or die trying," reads a line from the game description.

When THQ canceled Saints Row: The Third's Enter the Dominatrix expansion last year, the company said this content would be folded into the new game.

A Deep Silver representative told Joystiq that Saints Row IV is not simply Enter the Dominatrix masquerading as an all-new game.

"That expansion was cancelled and elements of it were rolled into Saints Row 4," a spokesperson told the site. "There will be a director's cut of Enter the Dominatrix released as DLC when SR4 comes out."

Don't you mean Saints row 3: the complete DLC edition?

Looks like they are adding a little bit of Crackdown to this one, which is ok by me.

I've enjoyed every Saints Row so far, the wackier the better, and adding superpowers just makes it even more over the top.

I don't understand why people are disappointed with this up coming game? We have a shed load of FPS (yawn!) titles, Racing titles and to a lesser extent, Story driven titles. This type of game is exactly what this industry needs? CHOICE!

Who has played the first, second or third Saint's game for the Realism?

Who has played this series, expecting a deep "Near the knuckle," story?

Finally... Whom here bought it, simply wanting a game to play, that is completely bonkers with  way over the top action and has non stop FUN in it from beginning to end?

If anyone thinks that this sounds as if a 10yr old child has developed it, then I would love to meet him/her? As it would seem they know what it takes to make games fun again...

NO ONE should look at this and say "This is too immature," or "Too unrealistic," because you are really missing the whole point of the Saint's Row Games! That is what we need them to be because...

...In a world full of endless Call Of Duty releases, Bonkers Titles Are Actually the Most Sensible!

If aliens are invading, shouldn't it be called "Saints Row: V"?

Sheesh. The plot of this game seems awful. I'm starting to think the head of development is a 10 year old child who keeps saying "Wouldn't it be cool if [insert stupid idea here]".

Wow, I understand wanting to take the series in a new direction, but this sounds terrible to me. No thanks Deep Silver.

This looks just like the Third (graphics), they should have just made it dlc for SR3, which is what it was supposed to be. But I still think it looks alright. I also hope this game has a ton of missions like in GTA because the Enter the Domniamatrix dlc was put into SR IV.

The first two SR games i liked, but 3 i never played, and 4 i'm also not going to buy.

These two SR 3 & 4 games are to exaggerated.

Maybe without the alien invasion setting I would've been interested.

Ohhhhh stop complaining everyone. They add ridiculousness so its not a GTA clone. Sure some of the humor is something you have to live through, but most of it is optional, you didnt HAVE to run around nude with a giant phallus-bat in 3, that was optional. And in a way, they already had it in there (the bike that could wheelie up buildings and such). If co-op is still in 4, it will be a blast to play. even if its not, I've gotten some of the best laughs and "awww that was awesome" moments from the saints games.

Ugh. I remember when Saints Row was about gang wars.

This game has already f***ed up.

I did love the costumizable options on SR3, so can't wait for GTAV and SRIV.

Um, what was that storyline?  That was just enough WTF for me to want a demo first.  It sounds like a complete finish-the-game-so-we-can-recoup-our-losses-and-bury-this-IP maneuver.

Hopefully this is better than saints row 3.

To everyone who thinks that releasing it 5 months after it was announced to be "rushing" it, it's more than likely that the game has been in  development since SR3 was released. That's 2 years ago, and they could have started even a little before that. They just timed the announcement so that they could release it before GTAV (which makes since).

Honestly, i thought SR3 was a huge improvement over SR2. (I never played the first.) I liked the new visual style and the amount of wackiness it provided. So im excited for 4. PLUS, those melee moves were pretty bad anus.

releasing the game 5 months after reveleaing it....hmmmm   it took gta 5 almost 2 years to give a release date.....this game is surely for the pissed of r* games fans including da pc guys......nice way to take revenge...!!!

hahaha releasing da game before gta 5 to get as much sales as possible.....good strategy..!!!

@00J If people keep buying sequels, developers will keep making them. Why do people not realise this?

Mjolnirukl
Mjolnirukl

Hmmm...I donno about this. Love SR2 and SR3 (never played the first) but this one might be straying from what the core of the series is. It's not the over the top story or anything that bothers me just that I liked being a crook in the game. I feel like they are moving away from that with this, turning it into an over the top movie theme and less of a gang themed game.

I hope what they are saying is right about this not being the entire game but just a part of it is true. It does not look any different than 3. The city seems the same and so do most of the vehicle models. I guess only time will tell if they changed much with this.

I was hoping SR4 would be a return to SR1/SR2 style. Sadly, I was mistaken.

@punksterdaddy

I love how far it's from reality but I will not pay full retail price for saints row 3 DLC. It ain't gonna happen ever.

randyfitzps3

@scared7 eh, it's always been a ridiculous series.

At least it has developed its own identity, instead of seeming like a 13 year old suburban white kid's GTA fan fiction made into a game (albeit with way, way better shooting mechanics).

cdog21

@Mabrry

The thing that made SR3 better than previous games was the change to how respect worked. I always HATED the fact that you had to grind respect in order to progress through the main story.

Just_Tom__
Just_Tom__

@Mjolnirukl on the same page as you man. I love the series, and will prolly end up getting this one, but from what I see here it could easily be passed off as 'Just' DLC.

When hearing SR4 I was hoping for a new story in a new city or something. Maybe returning to the roots of SR1 where you work your way through all the shit to earn respect. This feels and looks more like a forced continuation on The Third.

Sorry Volition Inc, until more details come out, I think this will be a swing n a miss.

00J

@obsequies That's funny considering it's full of murder, lude conduct, swearing and violence. It's not meant to be serious, but it's for mature audiences, think of it as a playable fear and loathing in las vegas.

What i find funny is that it's just a game, but it's supposed to be serious? lol

Contradiction...

00J
00J

@SUNDRAGONJ  It's a fun series, what i like is that they made each one more ridiculous than the last one, how else do you make it interesting. It's about craziness. It supposed to be the exact opposite of GTA. Now with 4, it's going to be even more crazy than itself, that should be interesting. There hasn't been a game yet where you can just go crazy without modding it to death, and cheat coding it.

@00J @obsequies Funny it just so happens that I'm watching that movie as I'm reading through the comments..well I'm recording it..
