Saints Row: Drive-By stopped short

THQ confirms cancellation of 3DS spin-off of open-world crime action game, no explanation given.

When Saints Row: The Third arrives later this year, it will do so without a planned 3DS spin-off riding shotgun. THQ today confirmed reports that Saints Row: Drive-By has been sent to an early grave.

Saints Row: The Third is still coming out, but Drive-By is out of gas.

In a terse statement provided to GameSpot and other media outlets, a THQ representative said only, "We are not developing Saints Row: Drive By."

Drive-By was intended to be one aspect of a transmedia push to support this holiday season's launch of Saints Row: The Third for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. While a movie produced by Lloyd Levin (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Watchmen) has been pushed back to some time after the game's release, THQ is moving forward with the rest of the push, preparing cross-promotional licensed headsets, energy drinks, and more.

Among the first batch of third-party 3DS titles revealed, Drive-By was also reportedly in development for Xbox Live Arcade. Playing through the XBLA, Drive-By would supposedly have unlocked certain features in The Third, which in turn would have allowed players to access more content in the downloadable spin-off.

I was really hoping for this, being one of the foolish saps who bought a 3DS... I don't know what I was expecting... was hoping for a little more than Zelda and Mario...

Not a big mystery here. 3DS sales are slowing to a crawl and THQ isn't in a position to take the gamble that things will turn around.

Drive by better not be like GTA:chinatown wars on the ds, but i think its always a good idea to put secrets or more access to content for other games. I would get it.......if i bought a 3ds

Yeah so long as the game is intact, I really couldn't care less. These trans-media extras haven't ever done something for me, just wasted potential that could've been included with the $60 price tag, or not at all.

Just so long as Saint's Row: The Third stays on track, I'm not too worried about anything else. Take the time to eliminate the glitches that plagued the second one and really flesh out the campaign in this one. I would like to see something different from the 3-gangs and 3-separate storyline routine the last two had. They can add as many storylines as they want, but I want a more GTA-like storyline. 50 hours and one long, consistent roller-coaster ride of a story.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because THQ lost so much money this year. This sucks though. I love Saints Row.

Wouldn't it be great if the press release went "We are not developing Saints Row: Drive By. Or ARE we?" That'd mess news outlets right up.

Dang, they were blunt and bold about it.

@MATERAZZI_23 Or maybe Nintendo just wanted to create a lot of hype and then after people got a 3DS, they are now allowing developers to cancel their games that never were in development...It's all business to sell more 3DS.

Well let's just hope the PS3/360 game will be good. Loved SR2, hoping this turns out well. I just want Co-op to allow 3-4 players instead of two because that's what made the game for me, playing the whole game with a friend was a blast but a few other friends couldn't join in on the fun.
