Saints Row dev working on next-gen

Volition dev LinkedIn page indicates studio has three unannounced titles in the works for current-gen platforms and "mysterious next generation."

by

Saints Row developer Volition may be headed to the next generation, according to a LinkedIn profile page spotted by Internet supersleuth Superannuation. The profile page of a staffer at the outfit indicates the Champaign, Illinois-based studio has three unannounced projects in the works for current-generation platforms, as well as "the mysterious next generation of consoles."

Volition is gearing up for the next generation, it seems.

The profile had no other details on the projects. Already confirmed upcoming Volition titles include the company's InSane collaboration with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, as well as Saints Row 4.

Additionally, a second Volition staffer published (and has since removed) a listing for Saints Row 4 on his LinkedIn resume, indicating the project is presently in development for current-generation platforms including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Publisher THQ confirmed Saints Row 4 last year, with company executive vice president Danny Bilson saying the madcap sequel will be even "wilder" than Saints Row: The Third. That game launched in November and has been the biggest contributor to THQ's bottom line.

As of press time, THQ had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Sorry, dreamfist11, it's just that aesthetics are important to me.  I'm not saying the game wasn't fun.  It was.  But sometimes it was hard to tell if the streets were still wet from the rain because they were ALWAYS wet from oil.  If you combine that with the overall state of disrepair in the game- noting here that upgrading any business doesn't seem to visibly change anything- I really think they could have done better.

I'm not getting another Saint's Row game again unless I feel assured it won't look as homogenous as the 3rd.  The whole world looked like a dump, with nasty oil slicks over every road.  I drove every inch of that town looking for an upscale part of it that didn't exist.  EVERY PLACE LOOKED THE SAME!  AARRRGH!!  It might as well have  just been 2 blocks.  At least I wouldn't have wasted time exploring.

Think I might boycott Saints Row 4. I'm just completely pissed off with the way Volition and THQ have acted. I was looking forward to this game so much -  it seemed to have pretty much everything I'd wanted in a game. Turns out half of the stuff was disc locked and you had to buy it, and when I thought the DLC missions would have some decent content I was wrong - the season pass was a complete waste of money, and the missions altogether lasted about 3 hours. Bad game.

I only want SR4 to feel complete again, not only good but short and innecesarily cut in pieces.

I don't want Saints Row 4 to be like Saints Row: The Third, I want it to be like Saints Row 2. SR3's story was a bit too ridiculous and didn't take itself seriously. Saints Row 2 had some wacky humor, but it still took itself seriously. I liked how SR2 had some dark segments and that the protagonist was sometimes brutal.

What would next gen consoles be like? Why bother if its not different or way better than the current gen consoles? I game on most platforms and if its not better than those I will not purchase. Certainly not if they block used games.

Isn't Volition's design director the guy who said blocking used games on next gen consoles would be a fantastic idea?!Ok then Idgafos about this studio anymore!

The only thing I was really impressed about Saints Row 3 was the top notch character creation (sex appeal ftw :) )

But the game really needs a strong point of view shifting. The whole bad guy/mafia stuff gets so boring after a while. If they allowed room for diverse paths (for example, the main character could either pursue an outlaw, police, or outlaw-vigilante path/guild - does replayabilty ring any bell here?...),

and if they re-conceived the totally dull and uninspiring 'ever spawning mobs' in the combat, in favor of 'hit the special target and be done with the quest',

also RPG-style dialogue options, character personality interaction (possible team-mate sub-quests) and psychology depth (possible romances...),

well, in that case, they could even come close to Mass Effect's popularity, who knows...

If it is going to eb like Saints Row: The Turd, I'll gladly pass it, thanks...

This series was irritating as hell. People call it fun, but that's their opinion. People like crappy stuff anyway. One thing I couldn't stand was the characters. First off I dislike being forced to play as a straight up  A-hole. I hated the main character so badly I wanted him/her to die. Secondly, why would they go from Shaundi being a pot smoking hippy to an annoying b*tch that does nothing but complain about Gat the entire time? She doesn't even look the same let alone sound the same. Unless this version of her is suppose be when she turned 20 or 30 something years old vs her SR2 counterpart where she looked more like she was probably 17 or 18. One thing for sure is that SR3 was more tolerant than the second game...Alll  that stupid irritating ghetto gangster crap was getting highly tiresome.

These guy's do not know how to optimize their PC versions. It's now six months after the release of Saints Row The Third and there are still lots of us who are having poor peformance issues. The people at Volition act like they don't even give a f**k. Having said that I will NOT be purchasing their games ever again.

Red Faction goes back to it's roots?!  Guirillia was cool, but armageddon was closer to the original games. (even though I enjoyed Guirillia more)

People think Battlefield has good destruction...It pales in comparison to red faction games!  Can't wait!

If they have the same type of dlc where roughly 40% of the features/weapons/outfits are Disk-Locked Content on SR4 then I definitely won't buy it. Before The Third, Saints Row was an amazing series with unlimited potential. Now it's a silly kids game.

Well yeah, SR1 was one of the pilot games on the 360's launch.  Sort of a "Tide us over till GTA4" contract.  What I'm reading here is "We couldn't get Rockstar into a timely contract."

Couldn't care less for what they're working on. Their policy regarding the used game market is the cancer of the industry.

I hope the wildness doesn't preclude good story missions like it did in SR3, sure you can use a giant rubber thingy to bash people to death but half the story missions are just side activites with short intro cutscenes and some of the story missions that actually ARE missions end unceremoniously without an outro cutscene, just a cut to black and the screen that summarizes what you've earned.

At this rate, they may as well copy paste GMod, throw you in a city, replace all the weapons with sexual toys, and remove clothes all together. Because good god, SR3...

Sad part is that there's always that one guy that'll say ^that's a good game.

This franchise is definitely on my radar now because of S3. I originally wrote it off as a GTA rip-off, and I never liked GTA, but I'm looking forward to it now.

There is only one thing I'm looking for in a next-gen machine.  NO POP-UPS!   The graphics are just fine in the current gen (the good engines), but I'm soooo tired of seeing things pop up, especially in open world games.

@thetrellan I'm fine with a dumb feel. The ghetto vibe is one of the things that made me remember the first Saints Row. I agree that we need more diversity in the city as I thought it was really cool how different areas of the city felt different from one another (Downtown compared to the Row)

dreamfist11

@GallifreyDog Yeah I was really disappointed with the story and the amount of stuff removed from SR2, this game could have been soo much better, mainly the story, how could SR2's story have been that good and SR3 this bad!?

pimpofdoom
pimpofdoom

@paladinjedi Even the character customization was not as good as Saints Row 2. I wanted a cool story that would tie up some loose ends like finding Dex and instead all I got was big purple dildos.

 @vader501st

 What policy?

Are you referring to one of the comments made months ago by one team member of Violition?

They havent done anything to you or the game industry. It would be stupid to boycott a dev based on one of their comments. They havent stopped used games. They simply made an opinion on it.

Dont create a grudge against an entire development team based on one mans opinion. They havent actually stopped used games, so there is no poilicy, there is no reason to be mad, no reason to boycott them.

Dont be so quick to make a problem out of nothing. That itself would be cancer to the industry.

@TrueGB You should check out SR2 then. Most fans actually think that game is BETTER than the 3rd one. I can't say since I haven't got around to playing the 3rd game yet, but I know for some that in some ways, yes it's better.

RobHoliday365
RobHoliday365

@pimpofdoom I agree.  I wanted to make the same character I had in SR2.  The Joker, complete with green receding hair.  There were no hair styles that were receding in SR3.   I wanted him to have the same purple with white stripe suit.  Sorry Again.  The clothing selection in SR3 is terrible compared to SR2.  Don't get me started on what they tried to pass as a story.

dreamfist11
dreamfist11

@brucecambell They haven't stopped used games but their pushing for it, and if it were up to them they would do it, so yes, we will be quick to point it out.  Why so quick to defend these guys brucey, you sound a little suspicious?...

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@brucecambell The problem is that many developers support the blocking of used games, together they obviously have a lot of influence...so showing that you do not support them by boycotting their games seems perfectly reasonable to me.

If everyone just ignores the problem then it will no doubt become reality.

Im not saying we should hate them for it (though it is an idiotic &  greedy opinion) but only showing some concern is not going to make much difference, avoiding their games will make it clear to them that they cant f*** with their customers.

vader501st
vader501st

@brucecambell Someone isn't up to speed about the "next gen blocking used games" rumor. I suggest you do some research about it. Every developer supporting this kind of thing is way over their head for several reasons, also, add that to the fact that Volition delivered a half-assed sequel that feels less than the sum of its parts.Instead of worrying about that kind of thing, they should've put more time and effort into their game. To blame the "used game market" for the current state of the industry is nothing more than a flatfaced excuse for the lack of either marketing or quality in a game.So yeah...their "policy", stance or whatever you wanna call it is full of BS.
