Rydia's Tale in FFIV: The After Years available

E3 2009: Square Enix announces the release of Rydia's Tale, the first episode in its latest WiiWare game.

LOS ANGELES--The sequel to the popular Super Nintendo classic Final Fantasy IV: The After Years arrives on WiiWare today, available to download for 800 Wii points and an additional 300 for Rydia's Tale, the first of nine episodes.

Originally released for mobile phones in Japan, this epic journey is set 17 years after the events of the original game. In a time of peace, the second moon has magically appeared and is now uncomfortably close to the Blue Planet. The story follows the young prince Ceodore, son of Cecil and Rosa, who must uncover the truth regarding the strange events that have unfolded in his world.

The After Years will have single-player and multiplayer modes. Players can team up so they can coordinate their commands into a single attack. This mode allows up to four players to band together in battle. The game's lunar phases will also play a large role in combat, which will affect the physical and magical abilities of players and foes. Rare creatures may also appear during specific lunar phases.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is available exclusively for the Nintendo Wii, and future episodes are set to be released in the coming months.

I got it the second it came out, the base game lasts about 4 to 5 hours. I'm only about an hour into Rydia's Tale so I can't tell you how long that is yet. Overall it's worth the price of admission if you have completed and enjoyed the original. If not, this is an easy skip.

wow are we going to end up paying like $50 if we want all the episodes?...i'm really getting sick of all these stupid extras that gaming companies are putting out. pretty soon i'm just not even going to bother with video games. it's getting old.

Personally I think that games like this are a perfect example of the lack of originality of RPGs on Nintendo systems. They're all either ports, remakes, or sequels to outdated games that were great for their time, but like I said before, they're outdated. Don't get me wrong, I love FFIV, and I'm not just some nostalgic fanboy, I hadn't played it until 2 years ago when I found the SNES version in a thrift store. I'll admit it's a great game. It's just that Nintendo and Squenix insist on being lazy with all of these sequels and whatnot. And it's not just this, it's also with the 3d FF and Dragon Quest remakes and whatever else there is that I forgot about.

... beating a horse that was alive until it becomes very, very dead. You're doing it right, Square Enix. That said, I'll probably buy it anyway, jus' 'cause I'm a rabid FF IV fan. Not quite a fanboy, but definitely a fan. First FF I ever played. SPOONY BARD!

$8 to start. $3 (per additional episode) x 9 = $27. So ... $35 for the whole package!? And I thought "Space Invaders Get Even" was expensive ...

I haven't played the DS remake, but I've beaten the original and the GBA port. One of the best FF games still to date, I'll probably have to check this out.

I remember reading about this when it was fresh in Japan and being all jealous as a result. Sadly I never finished FFIV (i quit some time after fighting shiva over a decade ago) so I'll have to hold off on this. I think it's excellent that there are episodes coming. I would have loved something like this in the FFVI SNES era.

Looking good although I was expecting it to be tailored after the recent DS remake.
