Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

GameSpot's sister site Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

This story was originally posted on Giant Bomb:

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

Heard of Giant Bomb, but never frequented it unfortunately. Sad to hear a member of the gaming community has passed. 34 is way too young, RIP.

34 is too damn young......... always liked the guy, when I'd listen to his podcasts he always managed to put a smile on my face even at the worst of times. a damn shame, a brilliant and unapologetic journalist, it'll be a while yet before we see someone like him  in this industry again. R.I.P.

I know how it feels to lose someone close to you that's so young so suddenly. It's just weird and depressing at times.. it's definitely a huge hole in your life that only in time if ever.. we'll learn to live with it. Live your life to the fullest people and do it with the ones you love and cherish.. cause we ain't promised tomorrow. My heart goes out to Ryan Davis's family and friends and the whole GS crew.. Ryan seems like one heck of a guy.. R.I.P Ryan

I remember watching him on a video once talking to other staff members.  He could have been a radio jockey, he just had that personality, was funny and sounded like he really knew what he was talking about.  I imagine this was not only a loss for his wife, family and friends, but also to his readers and listeners.

This sucks.  I always enjoyed his highly amusing banter and commentary.

RIP dude.

I would be more sad if he died from something that wasn't his fault

I know the Giant Bomb website, but I don't know much of the staff, as it's not a site I frequent. But it's always sad when anyone dies. This is just even more sad due to it being someone who contributed to the gaming community. RIP Mr. Davis and my condolences to his family. Life is too short...

At GSPOT, I and I'm sure many others would love if you were able to compile a video showing the "best of" moments of Ryan.  May not be possible, but just a thought.

Saw him at E3 2010.  Nice guy.  Shame he's gone.

Never heard of Giant Bomb or Ryan, but anytime someone with a passion for gaming passes away it's a big loss for the community, especially when it happens so young.  Condolences to his family and friends.

This is heart breaking. Unlike most gaming sites, Giantbomb and its staff felt like a really big family and a lot of people tuned in not just for game coverage but because everyone felt a family like connection with the cast.

Losing Ryan feels like I just lost an old friend. My condolences to his family, friends, and the rest of the Giantbomb cast.

Never knew him personally but from the vids and podcasts he seemed like my kind of dude. Always down for a laugh and a good time. The one indisputable fact that I do know of him is that he was damn good at his job. The industry lost a highly respected individual.

My condolences to his loved ones, friends, colleagues.

R.I.P Mr. Davis. You will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace Ryan, this is such sad news to read. You really do stop to think that life could end at any moment, you gotta make the most of what time you have on this world.

People should not be dropping dead at age 34.  That's fucked.  Sorry to hear about this.

Shocked to hear this news.  Similar to when hearing James Gandolfini died.  Just numb to it all.  Done too soon.  RIP

Very sad news.  He was way too young.  Makes you realize how fragile life is and how silly the trivial stuff that we focus on at times.  My condolences to his family and friends.

Wow that really hit home for me, as when I was 8-9 years old I'd watch him, Jeff, and the old GS crew give reviews on games. I remember when the GS crew got there Nintendo Wii, and I watched them all have fun unboxing it, and enjoying themselves. I'm gonna really miss him :(

Just to soon

R.I.P Ryan Davis

Gosh, I am big too, I need to change. I remember his face, I enjoyed his reviews years back. I am stunned. I love my fatty food too much :(

Anyone know the cause of death?

@Vegeta-sama So you know why he died? Funny since no one has said what the cause of death was. Show some fucking respect. You are a fucking disgrace to human kind. You piece of shit.

@nuno999 Maybe no one gives a fuck what you have to say.  Next time, either show some respect or shut the fuck up.

@nuno999 And there is always some jackass that has to say something rude. Hopefully his family doesn't read the comments. Unfortunately a lot of families in their situation do just to see the love and the support for their loved one. And luckily for them, 99.9% are respectful and supportive.

@deliman I'm 34 so this makes me question the decisions I make pertaining to my health. I'm so sorry for his wife, family, and close friends. When someone dies so young it comes as a great shock.

@gamedude78 @skiggy29 ok that sounds like bull. Nothing is natural about a 33 year old man dropping dead.

@Strider8009 @Skhuff Cause of the apnea itself though? And how do you figure?

Also, usually the cause is being disclosed in these cases, isn't it?

skiggy29

@contentxcontext @Strider8009 @Zevvion @Ripper_TV @Skhuff Unfortunately sometimes it takes a young person dying to teach and identify things in our lives that may need adjustments no matter what they are.  So yes, a nice guy dies so young I would like to know why. My deepest sorrows go out to his family and friends..

@Strider8009 @Zevvion @Ripper_TV @Skhuff guys, does it matter. I mean is it our place to even talk about how another man died? Isnt it better just to know and care that he did. And be respectful.

As long as his family knows then that's what matters, we dont need or have any business knowing or needing to discuss this.

Zevvion

@Ripper_TV @Strider8009 @Skhuff Because he had severe sleep apnea for a while. He talked about it on the podcast. It was pretty bad. One of his last tweets was actually that he had gotten only a few hours of sleep over a 3 day period.
