The official story: See below.

What we heard: Ubisoft recently updated www.bewaresamfisher.com, the Web site for Splinter Cell 4. The URL's name was probably originally thought of as a warning to franchise star Sam Fisher, all-American hero and US government special-operative nonpareil.

But new info indicates that it may have been a different kind of caution: Beware of Sam Fisher.

The Flash-based site features three images that piece together parts of the game's upcoming story. Included in the three pics is a newspaper clipping with the headline "Student Killed by Drunk Driver." Reading on, visitors find out that the victim's name is Sarah Fisher, Sam's daughter. A second image shows a black and white photo of what one would presume is Sarah, and the third image is of Sam Fisher's dishonorable discharge from the supersecret spy agency, Third Echelon.

However, that info wasn't enough for one GA forum member. Dissecting the site, it was discovered that the image files were organized sequentially, and s/he eventually found 20 images and posted links to them. Ubisoft responded quickly by renaming the images and rendering the links useless.

The big ruckus? According to the pictures Ubisoft didn't want people to see, Mr. Fisher became a wanted man for robbing banks and was eventually arrested. The most striking piece of evidence (image 1) shows a poster depicting a bald Sam Fisher with "BEWARE" in large print. While gamers are used to Fisher being somewhat of a lone wolf, this image--complete with Fisher bearing a shaved head--makes it seem as though the agent has indeed gone off the deep end.

Further information from the images (which may or may not be authentic) show that Fisher had little or no regard for civilian casualties (even using some as human shields), went on his crime spree armed with an automatic weapon, and after dozens of successful bank robberies, was arrested without incident or resist on his final attempt. These are all things atypical of the gruff-but-patriotic agent.

When asked for comment, a Ubisoft rep played coy, saying only, "Looks like Sam is going through some tough times."

Forum posters immediately hypothesized (some quiet adeptly--developers take note) about the game's upcoming plot. They range from Sam Fisher snapping because of the death of his daughter, to the whole affair being an elaborate cover story to allow him to infiltrate a criminal organization, much like 24 hero Jack Bauer did between the second and third seasons of the espionage-centric television series.

Though the prospect of controlling an unremorseful rogue agent is interesting, don't count on it happening. With antiviolent game bills going into effect next year, in addition to pressure from politicians about gratuitous violence, it's unlikely that Ubisoft would endanger one of its top franchises by making its leading man go loco for no good reason. Then again, you probably never thought you'd see a sickly, 50-year-old Solid Snake running around with a mustache either...

Bogus or not bogus?: He made do some bad things, but count on Sam ending up as the good guy.

I think that the stealth aspect of this game may suffer due to the storyline. How you could stay stealthy with 100 cops after you is beyond me.It's got to be a bit overwhelming, even for Fisher.

On the bewaresamfisher website, there are 3 short movies. The first one shows so many things so quickly but are quite interesting. There is one of a female in her underwear in a window, maybe giving cred. to the idea of an affair with grim, or maybe she helps him out. A lot of the video shows different plans and areas, so I definitely don't think Sam will be a bad guy. There must be some type of undercover op he's pulling off where he needs to play the bad guy as mentioned before. Regardless, ubi did a good job of getting everyone to the edges of their seats to find out more. I don't think I've ever been this excited about a game before.

I love the idea of evil Sam Fisher that would make a great Splinter Cell im hoping this happens.

I think his daughter is alive and held captive by a secret criminal organization and the only way to get her back is to do their bidding. He must've been told to rob banks for them, but the good in him purposly got him caught. Now Sam must break out of prison, search for the location of his daughter and her abductors, get her back, and clear his name, all without the help of Third Echelon, or so he believes....

either way the plot ends up into a cinderella story becuase its obvious sam is framed but as long as they dont change the stealthyness in SC then it doesnt matter,

Hey guys, I called both numbers. The 1-877-731-7437 one brings you to the gruff voice which is actually kinda pointless, besides the text message. The 1-877-734-7437 is received by a lady with what sounds like a Southern accent. She asked if I had information about Sam Fisher. At this point, I was pretty confused because I was afraid that I had called a place looking for a REAL Sam Fisher. Not the videogame one, a real criminal that did something else. I asked if Sam Fisher was a real person and she said she didn't understand what I was talking about. I asked what organization she belonged to and she didn't give me a straight answer when I asked if she worked for the FBI. In the end, she told me that there are 3 clues that "are not visible to the naked eye" on the site. She told me to call her back after I found the clues. Since I know that I probably won't be able to find them, I'm hoping some of you guys will check this out. Seeing as to how 2-3 people that posted before me hung up right away. I must admit, I did that too, but I called back a second time to ask what was going on. Great way to spread the word and get people to check out their site.

I just watched that trailer and what that previous poster explained is for the multiplayer of SC4. What I find more interesting is the end where is says online and offline (single and multiplayer) coming 2006 and than You Won't expect a thing or something. This definately implies the sort of plot twist being explained here.

i agree with britthimself. but i do think that deischarge is fake, mabye to help fisher get the drug dealers or somehting. i don't, i don't really care, because the plot line doesn't change the fact that i'll get the game the day it comes out.

Well, too bad that it is probably bogus, but it would've been a nice and interesting twist if it was true :)

I really hope Splinter Cell doesn't become too gorey (similar to Prince of Persia: Warrior Within). With that concern aside, this site is really awesome!

Did anyone else see the Splinter Cell 4 teaser trailer shown on GameTrailers.com? If not, the lowdown is basically a dark warehouse/base/etc. as we zoom out from what looks like a mercenary, wearing a very funky looking visor. Pan up to see Sam, goggles and all, scampering along a beam, looking down and seeing said merc. He raises his goggles and we zoom in to a bead of sweat as it falls...and splashes (rather loudly) onto the ground. The merc looks up to the beam...no Sam. He glances down, and Sam's in his face, ready to deal out some ass-kicking. However, the merc uses his visor to headbutt Sam in the face, stunning him and then gives his arm a wrench and his side a stomp whilst he's down. He looks up as there's a nose. The noise of a pair of night vision goggles powering up. A pair of blue lights appear over the merc's shoulder, as does a head, but he quickly ducks into the darkness as the merc spins around. He pops up again but then pops away again, as the merc looks about to see who's there. We cut away with a twin blur of blue lights. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe Sam's getting a bit off his game, and there's new blood covering him? There was the mention of other 'Splinter Cells' in SC3:CT, when Sam had to get some info on a Korean guy... One small thing I've noticed is that the 'new agent' in the teaser, was that he was bald...I'm just grasping at straws here, but maybe... Anyways, I must commend Ubi Soft for making what looks like a fantastic piece of sleeper advertising. Anyone else remember Halo 2 and 'ilovebees.com'?

I'm pretty sure if he's going undercover, Third Echelon wouldn't discharge him. Here's a theory, but its sketchy and most likely wrong. It sounds cool though. Sarah Fisher isn't a victim of drunk driving. Somehow, someone has a mole in Third Echelon and has tracked down Sarah and kills her to get at Sam. Sam, in his unstable condition, isn't given Third Echelon sanctioning to track down the killers, so he finds his own means. Suspecting a person in the federal prison, he investigates and finds that this person will give him information. Fisher begins robbing banks, and does so successfully to make the amount of money stolen rise. He has a disregard for civilian life, and even sees it necessary, as these will gain him a better chance of being locked away in federal prison. Third Echelon discharges him, and Sam confesses. Sam then has to crack his source and escape from prison to rain justice on the heads of the terrorists. Lambert meanwhile has an affair with Grimsdottir. The two alope and have a small cottage where they raise pure bred puppies. These dogs have special chips inserted into their rectums to carry important government algorithms. These algorithms calculate important things such as how many Cheetoes (crunchy, mind you) President Bush can consume in X amount of minutes, assuming he slows down at a pace of .87 Cheetoes per five minute interval, and also, that after 25 minutes, his soda belly begins to fill up and push on the outer wall of the stomach, causing him to slow further. Solve for Y.

I only bought the 3rd one because it was up to par with the Thief series. (finally) If all this is true and plays out the way people seem to think, I just don't see how you can get good stealth action mixed in with it. Splinter Cell 4 is suddenly dropping a bit on my list of games to keep track of.

Just so no one keeps calling someone's number, it's 1-877-731-7437, not 1-877-734-7437.

I called that number (1-877-734-7437) at around 1:30am Central Time, I think I woke up some lady, she was like "hello?" and I freaked out and hung up lol. Am I dialing the number wrong or soemthing?

I think that it would be interesting to be on the opposite side of the law for once, acting as a vigilante maybe, looking for the person who killed his daughter. However, I have a feeling that the 24-like story plot is much more plausible. Neways, an interesting twist either way.

Chaos Theory took place in 2007, so it would make sense that SC4 would be 2008.

I'm a huge fan of splinter cell, but I'm not so certain this "revival" of the series is a good idea. I mean, the plot sounds pretty sweet, but it just doesn't seem like Sam Fisher, my homie, lol. Although, I suppose that if someone touches a member of your family, you could go biserk. Plus, I'm a little appalled at the fact that Sam is bald. But I'll get over it. And to whomever said that they'd always wanted to beat up Lambert: You are not alone, HAHAHA!

The single-player game has taken the backseat in the last two games, but it looks like Ubisoft is changing that by giving us an intriguing premise and a more personal look at the man behind the goggles. I love it. Can't wait.

Looks interesting - to say the least. Im a big fan of the series and think that Ubisoft are excellent developers and storytellers. This is just the tip of the Iceberg, and I'm sure this is all just a setup, or a rouse - to get people interested. There is more to Sam Fisher, and Splinter Cell, than the death of his daughter.

Probably the plot is about Sam being framed and his missions about clearing his name.

Well that would definatly make the game worth playing and not to mention making it a little fresh. It seemed to be getting a little stale and repetitive.

There are two numbers... the first says 1-877-SF1SHER (note the numeral '1' instead of the letter 'I'). That's the number that Ubisoft (or some sicko terrorist organization!) is using... the second screen (the one with the sketch of the bank robber and the note of Phoenix, Arkansas? as gldnbearlax pointed out) has a number that says you can call the FBI. That one is 1-877-734-7437 (the 4 would be 'I' on a touchtone phone). Not sure what that number actually is, but i bet it's getting bombarded with calls!

DarkAngel_ZERO
DarkAngel_ZERO

So yeah...I called that number (1-877-734-7437)...it rang 3 times then someone picked up and said "Hello?" in a low voice, then didn't say anything... Is that supposed to happen, or is the number printed a real phone number to some place not part of the marketing campaign?

Has anyone been to the site recently? The article doesnt mention anything about the video you can watch which it show random clips about Sam robbing the banks and showing wanted posters of a blad Sam its almost like a montage you see in movies when a character has a nervous breakdown. Their is also a message on the phone on the site with Sam's voice saying "You have no idea whats coming" and "I'm the one your looking for" Lastly does anyone else notice the words "In Lieu" are used alot on the site it may something stupid but those are words you don't see used very often
