Rumor: Mario Kart 8 getting a track editor

[UPDATE] NewEgg product description matches the text from a fan-site.

[UPDATE] NewEgg's product description for Mario Kart 8 matches the game's Fantendo Wikia description, which calls into question is validity. We're still waiting to hear back from Nintendo for the official word.

The original story is below.

The NewEgg product description for Wii U game Mario Kart 8 suggests the upcoming racing game will feature a series-first track editor. New elements in Mario Kart 8, according to the product page, include "designing your own tracks," though no other details are available.

Nintendo has not announced track-editing functionality for Mario Kart 8 and product pages on third-party retailer websites are not necessarily always accurate. The product pages for Mario Kart 8 on GameStop, Amazon, Target, and Best Buy do not mention this functionality.

So for now, definitely take this news with a grain of salt. We've reached out to a Nintendo representative for comment.

Nintendo previously confirmed that karts in Mario Kart 8 will be customizable, just like they were in Mario Kart 7 for 3DS. Other new features for Mario Kart 8 include Mario Kart TV, which allows you to share videos on Miiverse--and anti-gravity tracks that let you race upside down.

It was also recently confirmed that all seven of Bowser's minions--the Koopalings--will be playable in Mario Kart 8. The game launches for Wii U on May 30.

Would you like to see a track editor in Mario Kart 8? Conceivably you'd be able to use the Wii U GamePad to build your courses, which seems like it would work quite well.

it took them over 8 games to finally include this in there, this shouldve happened a LONG time ago. me wonders if nintendo was afraid in the past that a regular joe would make better tracks than they would. nintendo has been known in the past for being lousy at swallowing their pride and it hurt their company a few times throughout history in the process.

Watch out people! Strong Wii U tittle is on the way!

I love Mario Kart, but was planning to skip it this generation because buying a WiiU right now is the equivalent of burning money. However, if this is true, I may just give in and get one.

An editor would be cool but considering the market for Mario Kart most would never use it.  Still it would be nice for those that are willing to make use of it.

The Wii U gamepad would be perfect for that editor.

Wii U is a blast.  Looking forward to this.

That would be an awesome feature. I really want a Wii U now lol.

What took them so long?

As epic as that would be, it's not really needed I think.  This game alone will sell millions of Wii U's just watch.

The track editor would have to be pretty sophisticated to handle all the anti-grav stuff. The ps4 is a good machine, powerful too. But the first party stuff so far has deadly dull. A few websites should all chip in and give me my money back for killzone sf. It has to rate as the very apex of dullness, and some said it was good.

Mario kart 8 looks ace!

I can't believe this story made it to gamespot.  There were no homosexuals, gender issues, preachy developers, or esports in it unless it's coming in an update to the article.

Aww, shame. Was a good idea. Maybe they'll do it anyway.

It's only a matter of time until the Mario franchise comes to Xbox/Playstation. The weak sales of Nintendos hardware makes it inevitable.

would be sweet but somehow i can't see it happening. this is nintendo we are talking about here. they are the walt disney of the gaming world and are VERY protective of their properties. allowing the community to take liberties with the game design is not something they would support. however, if the track editor is simplistic enough and only allows for minor tweaks, then perhaps it is a possibility. at any rate, this is a feature people would appreciate no doubt.

This would be awesome if Nintendo did it. I wish they would look at this game as their flagship racing game like MS and Forza and PS with GT. It would be awesome to be able to fully customize your Kart, have editable levels and as someone mentioned below, tracks you create that you can share.

it would be great if you could play tracks from other people and share your own.

@jeremyc99999  I don't know about that....I mean, I used to think that way. But, for me as long as I can pick at least three games right away to pick up around the time I buy the system and at least two more soon after that that are on the horizon, it's money well spent. I don't own a Wii U yet, but MK8 really makes me want one and when I do eventually buy one, I'll buy NSMBU, NSLU, SM3DW, and DKCTF shortly thereafter.

@jeremyc99999Burning money?

Wii U has 48 high quality games. (+ dkc tropical freeze )

Ps4 has 17 high quality games.

xbox1 has 8 high quality games.

numbers don't lie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcRLw8G8Fds

also don't believe anything gamespot says they are completely incompetent.

@Stebsis  kinda crazy that they'd be hiding it until so soon before release.

@Stebsis  If this is true it would be Modnation Racers! And thus, as you said, the greatest thing ever.

@NiteX  sure hope so! I know for a fact I'll be buying one for this game with or without track editor!

@NiteX  I enjoy the Wii U for what it is, but they definitely need all the console moving help they can get.

@Pewbert  Highly unlikely.  I predict that Nintendo will give the customers that bought the Wii U a couple of more years to get their moneys worth.  Then they will make a new console half way through PS4 and Xbox One life cycle with hardware surpassing theirs while being reverse compatible with the Wii U.  I expect they may buy some third-party developers to boost the amount of quality games on the console.  Nintendo has made it clear that selling out like Sega isn't in their long-term best interest.

@Pewbert I will take this comment just like all those comments that used to say that the 3ds will flop. and we all know how that ended up.  The wii-u might suck in sales but it still makes good games like.  I want this game, the next Zelda, the new Smash bros and X

MaTTerCuBe

@Xristophoros Brawl had a stage editor, and it was alright.  Not nearly as awesome as the homebrew options or other mods, but it does show that Nintendo has done it before and can do it again (hopefully even more options this time).

Xristophoros

@RyogaRod  agreed. but i think nintendo is far too concerned about "inappropriate" content getting out there. it would be difficult to control. you can already imagine what would happen right? :D

mhorne87
mhorne87

@RyogaRod I agree, I also want to be able to edit what items you can get. Like make every item be a red shell. That would be one interesting race. or maybe a blue shell.. hell.. :)

Pewbert
Pewbert

@mhorne87 I agree about the games being good, which is why the poor hardware sales will mean the game will get ported to other consoles. Basically I can see Nintendo doing a Sega.

Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@MaTTerCuBe customization along the lines of modnation racers (for the karts and courses) or froza (designing logos and stickers) is more what i was thinking. but i know that is a far fetched dream.

@r3pzero @Nev3rtime @gameroutlawzz  Nintendo going third party is a playstation owners fantasy but it's not going to happen. The console busniess modal made them the biggest video game company in the world and only last gen they made a fortune. The 3ds is still the most popular console in the world right now.

As it currently stands, MS have failed to ever make a profit out of consoles and the xbox one has had fewer sales every week (Currently sales are close) whilst the Wii u's sales have been stable (Though very low and disappointing). The Wii U could very shortly be selling better than the xb1, though I expect titanfall will give the xbox a short term boost. Make no mistake all current console other than the 3ds and ps4 have failed to get a big audience.

@Pewbert @MaTTerCuBe @mhorne87  Playstation is more likely to collapse and sell off the playstation brand. They are reporting a 1.1b loss this year and have had net losses for 5 of their last 6 years. They couldn't afford Nintendo.

MaTTerCuBe
MaTTerCuBe

@Pewbert @mhorne87The last thing we need/want is another Sega.  Does anybody even care about Sega after it quit hardware?  Look at their games, it's just sad.

Nintendo's software and hardware are like in a symbiotic relationship; the software won't do as well on other hardware.

mhorne87
mhorne87

@Nev3rtime @Pewbert@mhorne87 the way I see it. Nintendo and PlayStation has a handheld and a console to fall back on. Nintendo is selling bad on console but great of handheld, while playstation, the reverse. Microsoft is relying heavily on the console to be successful. Though I don't want any console to bow out,  all 3 console has great games.

Nev3rtime
Nev3rtime

@Pewbert @mhorne87  Wii U could end up out selling the xbox one. MS seems to be the most likely to bow out of console making at the moment.
