THQ Wireless has today announced that it has appointed Monkeystone Games to develop a version of the first-person shooter Red Faction for Nokia's upcoming N-Gage mobile gaming platform. Monkeystone Games was founded in 2001 by id Software cofounders John Romero and Tom Hall, along with a third ex-Ion Storm employee, Stevie Case.

"Red Faction will be the first FPS game on the Nokia N-Gage," said Stuart Platt, executive producer at THQ Wireless. "The team at Monkeystone was the obvious choice to work on the development of this latest version of Red Faction for Nokia's new mobile games deck. They created the FPS genre of gaming with such classics as Quake and Doom, and we are delighted that we can bring this expertise and experience to the Nokia N-Gage platform."

Red Faction was originally released for the PS2 back in May 2001. The game sees players leading a mineworker rebellion beneath the surface of Mars and taking on the forces of the evil Ultor Corporation. The game's most publicized feature was that players' weapons could actually deform terrain, although whether this will be possible on the N-Gage remains to be seen.

"I am thrilled to be working on a 3D shooter for one of the biggest publishers in wireless gaming," said John Romero, chief technical officer at Monkeystone Games. "It's a real challenge to create a fast 3D game on such cutting-edge hardware, and I am loving every minute of it."

We'll bring you more information on the N-Gage version of Red Faction as it becomes available.
