Rockstar says "of course" it could make game with female lead

Dan Houser says female playable lead for GTAV "didn't feel natural," but with the right game and the right themes, "it could be fantastic."

by

A future Rockstar Games-developed title could feature a female in a lead playable role, according to cofounder Dan Houser. Speaking with The Guardian, Houser explained that featuring a female lead in Grand Theft Auto V "didn't feel natural," but made clear that the company is not against the idea of introducing a female protagonist for a new game.

"We didn't really think about it this time. That's not to say that we couldn't or we wouldn't," Houser said. "This character set is just what came to us: it wasn't, 'we've got X and Y so we need Z,' we weren't trying to do it off a checklist--I don't think that will ever give you something that's believable or engaging."

"In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course," he added. "We just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things that we always think about. It didn't feel natural for this game but definitely for the right game in the future--with the right themes, it could be fantastic. But for GTA V, this was the organic thing that came up, these were the characters what [sic] would display the themes we wanted to think about."

Houser said previously that "the concept of being masculine was so key to this story," about GTAV's male-only protagonist roster.

GTAV's three playable protagonists are Trevor, Michael, and Franklin. The game's online component, GTA Online, will allow players to create a female character. This game mode will launch on October 1 as a free update to the game.

GTAV launched yesterday for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It generated $800 million in 24 hours, making its launch-day sales the strongest in Take-Two history and for the GTA series overall. For more on GTAV, check out GameSpot's review.

Just make Red Dead Redemption 2; release it on PC as well as consoles, and have a few playable characters, one being female.

"Didn't feel natural"?

Men don't like having women in power.

What's wrong with having a female lead? You could have probably customized her to have huge tits! And men would have loved that....

So would this female lead be able to pick up gigolos and beat them for money afterwards?

The best they could probably do is provide DLC for a woman character in GTA V - besides that, they seem to have no conception as to why a woman would be in a game...

Omg no way!?!? There's female voice actors out there? Incredible!

Get off this stupid topic GS.

If RockStar had a female lead now, after people have had a choice in Saints Row, people will probably accuse RockStar of copying them.

Maybe a good compromise would be if they made an "Episode" for GTA V and came up with a female main character for it.  Maybe a side-story of a family member of one of the 3 main characters.

At the same time, they let you choose to be female in GTA IV multiplayer.

It would probably have a dark story line like in MaxPayne.

we got one. It was Assassins Creed 3, and it was hopeless. Yes, I know you meant the Asian kind of Indian.

sometimes i wish there would be a game with an indian protagonist, but i seriously doubt that will ever happen..doesn't mean i'm gonna protest the industry because of it. games are getting smarter, narrative wise, and gta v is actually pretty impressive on that front. but it's like rockstar says, they're not gonna put in a character when it doesn't fit the story. if people actually played the game, maybe they would realize there are female characters you can hire for heists i.e. the really good hacker chick from an fib level.

Wait, that woman in the bikini holding the knock-off iPhone isn't the main character?  I need to cancel my pre-order...

Rockstar should ignore this feminazi bullshit and continue making games the way they see fit. GTA V did great despite the drama. Personally, I prefer playing as a male protagonist anyway. Only reason I could see to want to play as a female is to stare at her ass, but there's real life for that.

I'm sick and tired of females always thinking they have to be appeased all the time: the whole world doesn't revolve around you; Get over it! Females always want to talk a huge game than resort to infantile regression when they break a nail, or don't get what they want. Go play tomb raider already and open a can of SHUT UP already!

GTA V is about as big a production as a James Bond flick. Asking for a Female lead in GTA V would be like asking for the next 007 flick to be about Janet Bond.

The feminists don't seem to realize that having a female lead in GTA would not be a charming character...

Female lead can be very fitting in the next Red Dead, a lady or ladies running ranches in the frontier is very wild west, check out a mini series called True Women and you will know.

Can wait for the female lead hope its a crack addicted prostitute so we can all see the feminist head explode. Remember people most of the protagonist of GTA are really bad people

I see no "evil" feminists here. I see Gamespot writing controversial articles just to stir up the masses; immature boys jumping to wild conclusions and bitching about feminism, and a few hopeless souls trying to have rational arguments with said angry, irrational little boys. Honestly, these gamespot articles are the only places I have seen anyone calling for Rockstar to put a female lead in GTA. It's a non-issue in this case. If you go to the original interview linked to in this article you see that Gamespot chose to report on the most controversial topic of the interview and ignore everything else. So continue to cry about the invisible femnazis here, you bunch of overgrown children.

@OneStrong2 your mother must be proud of you. I guess you don't know that females actually play games too?

SueSquare

@OneStrong2 So is that the only game the female gamers should have to play? We aren't allowed any variety at all? There are hundreds upon hundreds of games across every genre that have well developed male lead characters with such variety and representation that it's exasperating.

As part of the consumer audience that buys games, is it really too much to ask that the money I put into the industry be used to tailor some games to my demographic? My actual demographic, not the glittery pink fashion obsessed one that everyone seems to think describes us.

And we know the whole world doesn't revolve around us - why do you think there are such focussed movements of women trying to at least bring us all to an equal level.

And games with female leads wouldn't be aimed at you - it would literally be aimed at another part of the target market. If you don't want to play games with female leads, don't! Just don't talk down at or scream abuse at those who do want to.

@DIngdow A little video game called No One Lives Forever already featured a "Janet Bond", dude. But that game can be a good example female lead don't sell since it fits the "best game no one played" profile.

@Simulator_Shock tbf there aren't any charming GTA characters.  They're either eccentric, annoying,  mildly relatable, or just really weird.  Some have combinations of these.

That's what I don't get about this hubbub about there being no positive female role models in GTA V..

There are no positive role models in any GTA ever.. They're all extremely exaggerated stereotypes, and horrible people.

Even Niko, everyone's favorite lovable "protagonist", would stuff your granny in a handbag and mail it to you if the pay was good.

oursisthefury07
oursisthefury07

So have you not heard of Beyond Two Souls,The Last of Us, and Mass Effect? Each of those games featured strong female lead characters that I am sure would appeal to your "demographic". Lets also not forget Skyrim,Fallouts 3-4, and the Saints Row series all of which are high grossing games in which you can choose your sex. So don't say there aren't games out there that don't appeal to women because there are alot more than I mentioned. I like many others would not want to see a great game like GTA V ruined with a female lead. Honestly how funny would Trevor be if instead his character were a women? I cannot see any female in the GTA series that I would enjoy seeing in a lead role in future installments. I didn't even find any of them funny especially in GTA V, I'm not being sexist but its true. The GTA series is all about male machismo and testerone blowing shit up feeling like a badass, gamers won't get that feeling playing as a women. The bigger demographic of gamers is men sorry to say. Rockstar should keep things the way they are, if it ain't broke then don't fix it.

@red_city I don't think anybody was looking for "positive female role models."  I think that after ten different GTA games they'd be satisfied with just "playable character."

@yamilvirginio @SoreThumbsBill Wow these are some very interesting leads. Lets keep brainstorming. The third female character should be a Middle aged white stay at home trophy wife with two kids and lives in a nice home...
