Rockstar investigating early GTAV sales

After retailer Amazon reportedly breaks street-date for open-world game, developer examining "how and why that is occurring."

by

Rockstar Games is currently investigating early sales of its much-hyped open-world action game Grand Theft Auto V, the developer has confirmed with GamesIndustry International.

Retailer Amazon reportedly broke the street-date for GTAV, with copies heading to some purchasers ahead of the game's global release date on Tuesday.

"We are in the process of investigating early 'sales' to determine how and why that is occurring," a Rockstar Games representative said.

GTAV is expected to be one of the biggest games of this generation, with one analyst predicting it could sell as many as 20 million copies by March 2014.

GameSpot's GTAV review is scheduled to go live tomorrow at 10 a.m. EDT.

GTA is one of the few game franchises I look forward to buying as a day-one purchase.  The things that Rockstar proves they can do with six-year-old technology is amazing.  They cram more gaming into one package than anybody this side of Valve.  Their vehicles handle better than a lot of dedicated racers I've played.  Ditto for the shooting.  Who among us hasn't giggled like a little girl at getting our wanted level as high as possible and wreaking havoc on the city?

I've never gotten close to seeing everything available in one of their games.  I can only imagine how many hours it would take.

Maybe it'll be as boring and insipid as GTA4.

One of my PSN buddies has been playing GTAV from 14/9/13 and I was hoping for mine this morning lol, didn't happen so I guess I wasn't on Amazons friends list and it should/better be here tomorrow. ;-)

This game is going to ruin my existence as a human.

As someone who does not do multiplayer and has a multi year backlog of games, its irrelevant to me what the release date for games is, ship late, ship early, it dont matter to me.

I can't say that GTA is art, I partially agree about the whole focus in violence and inmoral matters that call the young people's attention. But I think I know why GTA is so hyped than other games. It's because that the main reason we play video games is to create a virtual world where we can forget about real life and its huge problems.... When Just Cause 2 came, I thought I could do anything I wanted, I was free to fly, travel and watch the nature for free, without having to spend money to be able to pay for a expensive trip. Just Cause 2 got an online version later for PC, and they realized that people were there because it was fun to troll your friends as many ways as possible! Skyrim give us this feeling of freedom too, and it's one of the most loved games since 2011, the only problem with that game is the lack of online features that inhibit players to interact with their friends like many other MMO RPG games proved to be successful due to the online features... Dark Souls, BF3, Far Cry, etc... Open World is what people want, because you can use your creativity as the features give you more freedom, and GTA offers that to the people! So you could say that GTA V is a milked version of San Andreas since it's the same map, but the technology that this game will offer to us now, is way better than the old San Andreas, like a new TV or cellphone, you can't say it's just a TV or a phone, which means that we will be able to troll our friends and the AI controlled people in so many NEW ways, like any new product offers us new content, so you will think that this is almost a whole new game ! The point is, games like these are made for fun, if it comes with a good story ( which isn't the focus ) it's just a bonus. Want story ? You wont find on open world games....As for Call of Duty, I agree it's a milking industry, because they offer new short story, new guns, new maps, but it's all limited, corridor-oriented, then the only possible answer to "why COD sells ? " is because people want to keep up their world ranks ! We have car rancig all years, don't we? NASCAR, F1, Rally, etc... and the pilots and crews are almost the same all these years, but people want to see who's gonna win this season !!! They want to see the challenge, and the only thing that changed are the car colors ! Milking ?

Amazon would've lost about a bajillion preorders if they did not ship in time for release day. Yes it shipped saturday but no it did not arrive today *heart broken*

Rockstar is a big company but Amazon is even bigger which means they have many more high priced lawyers.

So? I would understand if street retail would go earlier (which they did...), but Amazon? What's the problem of "heading" before release date? It doesn't mean he will get it same they or guaranteed that he will get it even on the release date.

People payed, they want it day one, not after and without going to the store, so why it should be actually dispatched when it's released?

One assumes it will have proper graphics and controls and be 'moddable' on the PC.

Meanwhile, you chaps enjoy your thumbsticks and elbow triggers noodle things.  :)

@theKSMM I have gamed it up for decades and the gran theft auto series groundbreaking style, design, story telling, and production has never failed to impress. Although the ps2 GTA left me so motion sick I would make by friend play parts of the game while I watched with one eye.

And rockstars red dead redemption and LA noire is still up there with any game out.

Since the 7th gen and 60fps I may not get as motion sick but I still get butterflies in my stomach thinking about the launch day.

All games are virtual and make us forgot about reality, not just GTA.

@gohan661

Same here. I got confirmation that it was sent on Saturday evening but it will not arrive until tomorrow.

I hoped that it would be today but sadly no!  :(

I don't think this is what Rockstar are meaning though, since I bought L.A.Noire from Amazon in 2011 and it arrived the same day it was released.

I think Amazon has sent out copies and people are actually using them now, when it must have been agreed that it has to be 17th and not a day before!

I am just speculating though.

@LADIES_MAN_2013 Your friend couldn't scrounge up $60.00 in 5 years to purchase a game that will net him about 80+ hours of enjoyment?

@egger7577 who said anything about lawyers? It would go ONLY IF they would have some kind of exclusive event elswhere or something

@komuchen It's all good free PR for Rockstar. Don't believe this is somehow accidental or controversial. They get press for the game itself and then for these shipping 'snafus'.

My post about trolls was trolled, how fitting.

I did think about rhyming but I don't have a creative bone in my body and I like to confound people's expectations.

Woooooo gta!

Crowgasm888
Crowgasm888

@allyal1 After the first two words of your comment, I expected this to rhyme and be in iambic pentameter. Ultimately, therefore, the comment as a whole was a significant disappointment.

(There are endless rhyming options for 'trolls!')

@RicanV @LADIES_MAN_2013 man, i have a PS3 and a Xbox, boths are moded, i have them for 4 years, i played all major titles from both for 0$, all are pirate, still i feel good about this, i dont give a shit about other say

dalua360
dalua360

@RicanV it depends.... I'm not in favor for piracy, but it depends where he lives..... Some countries are charging tax fees that doubles or triples the price of imported products. South America is one continent that suffers from that. PSN store got instructions from South America countries that Sony can't sell their products from PSN anymore by using credit card on their own currency, because it goes against some international currency conversions and taxes. People from those countries will have to buy the PSN card and create a North American, or European or Asian account and redeem their codes. That's not all, take Brazil as example, where the dollar conversion for their native currency is 0.42 multiplier, which means, for each 1 dollar, brazillians have to pay almost 2,5x in native currency. A game will cost R$ 150,00 but their minimum wage (salary) is about R$ 680,00.... So, a new game there costs 22,5% of their minimum wage !!!!! ABSURD !

I said something about lawyers. Rockstar can't do anything here without lawyers if they wanted to take legal action.

komuchen
komuchen

@egger7577and who said they want to take legal action? I gave you example why they would, but there is no such thing.

And what would be the reason? That they sold their product and made them money? It's not thirdparty shenanigans or piracy

picho86
picho86

@EL_Bomberdor I have no idea how it was with keyboard, but with a controller it was near unplayable. The physics were way off which doesn't have anything to do with a controller. The cars just couldn't turn properly. You had to make a complete stop before turning or you'd lose control entirely.

@Crowgasm888 It's funny when people like you, who come here to criticize people, are criticized, and when this happens the only intelligent response you could create, was an offensive attack, bordering cursing. Where is your refined vocabulary used to ramble incessantly?
