Rockstar building 'cutting-edge' next-gen tech

Company's Scotland office seeking programmer to help build new technology to power open-world games.

Grand Theft Auto V developer Rockstar North is seeking an experienced programmer to assist in building "cutting-edge" next-generation technology. The job posting indicates that a successful candidate will "develop cutting-edge architectures and high performance systems for current and next-gen platforms."

Additionally, desirable skills for the position include experience with "streaming, open-world games," among other things. The Edinburgh, Scotland-based Rockstar North is currently working on GTAV, which is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during spring 2013.

Next-generation platforms from Microsoft and Sony have not yet been announced, though rumor and speculation have been available in heaps. These unannounced platforms are rumored to be on store shelves during the holiday 2013 period.

I hope next gen can do real-time ray tracing or path tracing. Why? Because this guy at http://raytracey.blogspot.co.nz/2012/12/unbiased-dragon-fiesta.html said we can have levels with "BILLIONS of triangles". This is what he said:  "What you see here are 32x32 (1024) Stanford dragons, each containing 100k triangles for a total of more than 100 million triangles, all path traced in real-time. This number is actually quite modest, as we can easily scale up to billions of triangles and still be real-time. This is impossible to achieve with a rasterization based game engine."

This is the Stanford dragons he's talking about:

And this is the True Power of path tracing:

Go to 1:33 to see what this could look like in real-time.

I remember seeing Rockstar North's studio in Edinburgh on holiday and actually taking a picture on my disposable camera I was that in awe.. (bear in mind I was young and 'cool' at the time).

Rockstar and Naughty Dog.  Personally my favourite Developer's ever! :D

Are they not satisfied with the state of the 'RAGE' engine that their San Diego studio developed? The wording makes it seem like they want the programmer in-house at Rockstar North in Scotland. I guess they want more direct control over their engine instead of communicating overseas all the time.

It might be for Agent, even though we haven't heard about that game since 2009.

If its not open world, it's no good. For example, Dishonored would have been great with open world. Now it is way to short.

I hope the first game developed on the new engine will be a RDR sequel.

After GTA V, it's either Bully 2 or another Red Dead. Frankly, I'm fine with either. I remember the composer gave away that he was working on Bully 2's composition, so it's most likely Bully 2.Hoping this new thing for Rockstar ends up being the bee's knees. Did I just say bee's knees? Yes, I did.

I love Rockstar. They're always doing something amazing for games in general. Well, except for that lack of RDR on PC. Damn, I'm just not going to get over that. Still! Rockstar is amazing at what they do.

Rockstar North is console-only developer. Cheap ports MAY BE developed when there are visible amount of beggers.

"cutting-edge"  tech! well hardly !  next gen consoles are mid range pc components form a year ago. Next Gen is PC only ever going to be a PC thing imo, not turned my PS3 on for games in a year plus even though i got some so called killer games like kz3 gt5, resist3 that i have not even bothered to finish.

only way i will be picking this game up is on PC.

Well I doubt they'll find the best talent. R* has a nasty rep, probably the worst in the industry for working conditions. Ask anyone who has worked at one of their studios for a dev cycle.

Don't bother, wretches. Do you REALLY think that there will be enough people to want to join in 'open world' real time dirty-crime simulations...? Oh wait, there already are, so says the not-yet-17 players of filthy RS games, now on mobile so they can maraud in the streets blasting windows out with Satanic bass as they pass tossing out drugs to kids AND candy.

1. Finish "Cutting Edge Tech"

2. Apply said "tech" to Skyrim, or next Elder Scrolls SINGLE PLAYER game

3. World is a better place

Hopefully this "cutting-edge" technology includes some damn compression, the weight of their latest games are just unacceptable, and no, before you bitch, it doesn't matter the fact that the map is huge and has all those objects, there's a list of games with a world much bigger which occupies way less on the HD.

evil-zodiark

if you'll keep dumbing the PC. then you will never make anything cutting edge. the witcher 2 and star citizen put anything R* have ever made to shame .

Are the software designers programming new tech or are they physically building it.  I find this article very confusing.  Why would they build new tech if it will be used on tech that other companies create(xbox ps).?  Sorry, too convoluted for me to understand.

Maybe this means R* is hiring new programmers, end of story.
