Rocket Knight blasts off on PSN

PlayStation Store Update: Konami mascot revival hits PS3 with Price is Right and Sam & Max in tow; PSP sees downloadable launch of Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands.

Until recently, Rocket Knight star Sparkster would have been fine fodder for a Forgotten Mascots feature. However, Sparkster no longer qualifies, as Konami's downloadable Rocket Knight has jogged the opossum platforming hero back into memory.

Rocket Knight ($14.99) debuted last week on Steam and Xbox Live Arcade and finishes its rounds by headlining this week's slate of new offerings on the PlayStation Store. In the game, players control Sparkster as he tries to take out an army of hostile wolves, mixing platforming levels with side-scrolling shoot-'em-up action on the way. Konami also added challenge levels to the mix, with players able to compare their best times through online leaderboards.

Sparkster is one awesome opossum, but should not be confused with Tengen's Awesome Possum.

The nostalgia train continues on the PlayStation 3, as gamers can now also download an adaptation of the classic game show The Price is Right for $9.99 (complete with popular challenges like Plinko and Cliff Hangers) or relive the original PlayStation days with the newly downloadable PSone kart racer Bomberman Fantasy Race ($5.99). Finally, those who subscribed to Telltale Games' new Sam & Max season on PSN can now download the second full episode, The Tomb of Sammun-Mak.

Over on the PSP, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands gets a downloadable debut day-and-date with the retail release. Timed to coincide with this month's feature film debut for the series, the $39.99 action game takes its inspiration from the series' Sands of Time story arc and includes side-scrolling gameplay designed specifically for the PSP.

If the Prince's asking price is a bit steep, Sony also has a pair of new PSP Minis on sale. For $4.99 each, gamers can now download Manic Monkey Mayhem and Supermarket Mania for the handheld.

A full list of the week's deals and new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, discounts, and add-on content, is available on the official PlayStation Blog.

Not a bad update on PSN this week :)

Hey Binarynova: I read recently that Sony will be releasing a patch for Mod Nation to significantly help with the load times in Mod Nation. It's probably due to the nature of loading people's creations, but from what I read, this should help with that. I don't remember the source, but it was probably IGN.

I already had the game pre-ordered, but the Modnation Racers demo sealed the deal for me. The racing is a blast, straight out of Mario Kart, complete with the option to go "pure racing." That's an option I always wanted in Mario Kart. The track, mod, and kart creation tools are superb. I agree with (no offense Gamespot) IGN's review. It would basically be perfect except that the load times are too long. But I'm definitely willing to put up with that.

I played the Rocket Knight demo, and the little additions they made to the combat feel natural. The game looks good, though I feel like the older ones (at least the first RKA) had a more gritty feel to them, which I preferred. I miss having to charge up the attack button in order to execute the rocket burst as opposed to merely tapping a direction and a button to do it. It just feels...weaker. At any rate, I'm planning on dropping the cash for the full game, though I'd like to know exactly how many levels there are before I commit. $15 would be pricey if the game is short.

Enjoyed the demo for Rocket Knight definately some nostalgiac fun but not worth $15 in my opinion. I might check it out if they drop the price but I hear it's a little lot on the short side and I can't see if having much replay value.

I had no idea they were making a new Rocket Knight til I saw it on the PSN today. Haven't gotten to try it yet, though.

I'm going to download this eventually, loved the original Genesis game. I wish they'd eventually release the original on Wii VC or even XBL & PSN.

Why wasn't Rocket Knight news-worthy when it first came out last week and now is?

@luffy11234 I didn't like the ModNation Racers demo. I loved the kart/mod creation tools. I loved the track creation feature. I hated the racing.

all of that is nice and all but what made me happy was the mod nation racers demo. Its alright being they can't let you use everything but it really made the "creation part" feel covered.
